I am going to be moving and I need to start packing. Where is the best place to buy a moving kit of boxes? Uhaul? They have something listed online as the ultimate moving kit for $535.66 with free shipping.. Is that good?

Is there something better out there that you can suggest?

That sounds awfully steep. Are you anywhere near a U-Line? We got boxes for around $1 each (nice, sturdy moving boxes) at our local distributor.

Check with your moving company. They provided us with all of the boxes that we needed, and even came to pack most things for us.

My friend just moved and she got a great kit for a good price at costco of all places, hope this helps.

I would not pay for boxes, no way. Are you a regular patron of any restaurant? If so, ask when they get their shipments in, they can probably give away some boxes. Walmart's a good place for this, too! I always loved french fry boxes from restaurants..unform size, great for stacking..the place I loved got shipments on Wednesday and Sundays so I would get a bunch then! They are GLAD to give them away, saves time for them, they don't have to break them down and recycle them!

Not real sure where you are located, but here in PA the best place to get moving boxes is the liquor store! They give them away and they are heavy duty.

The other place to check is the grocery store.

Liquor stores, supermarkets, and even Craigslist and freecycle are good places to get boxes for free/cheep. One advice that I have, though, is to try to get the same dimensions - it makes it much easier to pack up the truck...

For 90% of the stuff you'll be packing, you just need general boxes. Things like the wardrobe boxes, or the dish/glassware inserts cover the other 10%.

Another place I've seen where you'd have to buy boxes is Costco. I was looking at theirs, and the price seemed to be pretty reasonable.

More advice: Pack books in SMALL boxes - if you use a normal 12x12 box, it'll be too heavy to comfortably carry!!!

(I was lucky - my company ships stuff all the time, so I was able to get my boxes from them. Turns out I didn't need them all, since we decided not to move.)

Final advice: Take the time to go through your stuff, and weed out stuff you don't use - why pack it up if you're not going to use it in your new place anyway??? (I gave away a LOT of stuff on freecycle)

BTW - congrats on the move!!

I'd post on Craigslist asking for boxes (for free or very cheap). Also, do you have any friends or family who work in a corporate setting? Boxes that reams of paper come in are an awesome size for packing books since they are smaller and don't get too heavy, so if you have someone who works for a large company, often they can scour a few floors at their office and pick up several for you in a single day.

If you're being moved professionally, they'll likely have boxes that they'll provide for you.

Best of luck!

I moved and got tons of free boxes at:
Wegman's (grocery store)
Starbucks (they will tell you when they get deliveries and hold them for you)
Liquor stores

Keep in mind that you may get boxes that do not 100% close - just take another box, rip off a side, and use it as a base or top. Yes it takes more work but I was not about to pay for boxes (although costco does sell a big kit).

I second the recommendation on boxes from the liquor store. When we moved into our new house 5 years ago, I'm sure the neighbors must have thought we were alcoholics, lol.

But seriously, I've never paid for a moving box. Between the liquor store, grocery store, etc we get plenty of free ones.

In my area on Freecycle.org, someone is always giving away moving boxes, it seems like a couple times a week. Freecycle is great if you're not already a member. I have been giving away lots of stuff out of my garage (curtains etc)just by responding to requests on there.

I love liquor store boxes! The compartments are perfect for glasses, mugs, etc. and they're so sturdy. We were laughing about what the new neighbors would think when the movers unloaded box after box of rum, vodka and tequila.

Pay attention to who is moving in or out of your neighborhood. I've asked people for boxes as they were unpacking and everything was FREE. I've also returned the favor when unpacking at my new destination. It seems like a much better way to recycle then just to throw them out for the trash man. Good luck!!!

I agree...I wouldn't pay for them either. Make calls first to places unless you just happen to be there. I wouldn't just stop by and hope for the boxes to be there. The liquor store boxes are great-very sturdy! Thankfully a family member owns a store in our previous location so we didn't have to explain to our family packing the truck that we really just kept going to get free boxes! :rotfl:

We just moved, we bought no boxes. They are free everywhere....try hospitals, ours have a certain day of the week that you can go and get as many as you want before they cut them down.
