Best point and shoot digital camera for DL?

Resurrecting an old thread to say thanks!

I got the Canon S95 and took it on our CA/DL trip in April/May. Didn't have time to read up too much but it was overall pretty easy to figure out the basics considering it's my first digital camera. I didn't realize until less than a week before our trip that I needed a memory card. Thankfully a friend told me which one to get on Amazon and it came right before we left.

Haven't shared any photos online or printed any but we've watched them on our computer and my sis took them to work to share on her computer. Very, very happy with the shots. :) The auto focus worked great but I had to turn if off for the Monterey Bay Aquarium since it wanted to use flash in the darker seahorse exhibit room and the flash reflected off the glass. That was the only issue with that and the bellman at our hotel showed me how to turn the auto focus on and off.

Did great on outdoor shots and inside the aquarium too. The jellies exhibit was indoors and subdued lighting (like the seahorse exhibit) but I got great shots of the jellies w/o the flash going off. Really nice shots! Great color.

Oh, and very compact. Nice to have a small, lightweight camera. More compact than my older film cameras - and I got the smaller, compact ones.

So I know I don't have any downloaded to share the quality but just wanted to say I'm very happy with the camera and thank you to all who answered my questions!

Just noticed this thread. I bought a Canon S100 to use for my upcoming trip. I purchased a couple of extra Sterlingtek batteries from Amazon. I'm used to using a DSLR so the settings are similar. Looking forward to see how my shots and movies turn out.

The newer S100 is a hot shot camera but unforunately they do not do well with low light as a bridge, mirrorless or DSLR

Please explain. Not sure what bridge and mirrorless mean, internal structure of the optics? Are you saying the S100 doesn't do as well as DSLR in low light conditions? I've seen some night video on youtube that look pretty nice. But no, I don't expect it to do as well as a DSLR with a f1.4 lens.

I've only played a bit with the S100. If you'e familiar with it please share any tips for DLR as far as settings, etc... Would appreciate any tips.

TIA,

TIA,

Go to dpreview.com or steve's digicams.com and make a comparison. My brother has a S100 and I have nikon d5000 and trustme there is no comparison. There is a class of cameras that does not use a mirror like a dslr does thus they are smaller but use the same size APSC sensors as the dslr's, look at a nikon j1 or the sony nex-3,5,7 series.

The S100 does pretty good in low light as long as you leave it at wide angle. It's f2.0 wide open but closes up pretty fast as you zoom. Comparison to cameras at least twice as large is just not fair. The beauty of the S100 is the combination of controls and features in such a small package. I picked one up a few months ago for our trip. I lost my old SD800 ELPH but have become accustom to our DSLR so I wanted something with more control. The control ring is wonderful if you like to make adjustments on the fly. I would never mistake this camera for a DSLR with a fast lens but I'm also not going to carry a boat anchor around the park all day either. Even a Nikon J1 is on the big side for a day at the parks.

As for a recommendation, unless you're an enthusiast I'd skip the S95 or S100 as they are pretty pricy. I like the ELPH 300 for a small P&S at a good price. The SX260 is bigger but the feature set including the big zoom is very appealing. A bit on the big side for a pocket camera. As you can see, I'm a bit impartial to Canon P&S cameras. Funny since I went Nikon for DSLR.

Just to clarify: with my Canon S95 I didn't use it at night or use the video feature so I can't speak to the quality of those features.

I was spoiled during this last trip though, I used my Canon Rebel, and during the fireworks I had no lag, and was able to snap about 500 shots. Yeah....lol.

Krispin41, I'm also Canon Rebel owner. Wanted to take pics of the Halloween Screams fireworks last year but didn't feel like fiddling with a tripod in the midst of a crowd--not to mention I'm an amateur who relies on the auto setting a lot... Would you mind telling me what you did setting wise to get your pics and how they came out? Do you use a tripod? Where did you stand to get your vantage point? :goodvibes
