Best point and shoot digital camera for DL?

I'm limited in choices since (I wrote in PP) I am choosing to get a "free" one through our Visa rewards point program. We still need a little more points to get the S95 but our trip is 5+ months away. They, of course, don't have the S100 yet. But this thread has helped me narrow it down to get the best one out of my available choices.

I like a smaller camera. I do like some zoom but I'm not into macro shots so hopefully the S95 will be fine for my use.

S95 takes fine pictures and because the S100 is brand new, it is selling at full retail which is overpriced for what it is right now. Maybe it'll come down and show up in time for your trip, but if it doesn't S95 is still good.

I'm looking for a PS with good zoom capability so if I'm a far I still can get a good picture.
The camera's that I have narrowed it down to is:
Canon S95 (6.0-22.5mm) says 3.8X zoom
Canon Sx230hs (5.0-70.mm) 14X zoom thanks to Asylla posts!
Nikon S9100 (4.5-81mm) 18X zoom
What exactly does the 3.8X mean? Would the Nikon be the best choice because of the 18X zoom?
I'm racking my brain on my final choice, I was able to play with all of them but still can't make decision.

Nikon has a dimmer lens that doesn't let as much light in. P&S and super zoom cameras struggle (speed wise) when it's darker and can suffer from quality when forced to use a higher iso due to darkness. Depending on reviews I would lean towards the Canon cameras at first glance.
The S95 doesn't have nearly as much zoom but it uses a larger sensor and much brighter lens so it can take higher quality pictures especially when in a dark environment. Not to mention it can be a lot faster when taking darker pictures.
3.8x is basically the magnitude it can zoom in to. Otherwise it can make an object look 3.8 times bigger.

I own the Nikon S9100 and I love it!! To do night shooting with out the flash you have to have a steady hand but the flash doesn't wash people out really bad.

I first took this with me a couple days after I bought it and did not have it all figured out. And on day one of the trip my friend accidentally dropped it and the dial broke, so I could only use 3 settings but here are some pics I got with it.

This one is with flash I believe

Night Time Zoom

These are all after I got my camera replaced. I told them it wouldn't work but didn't tell them I dropped it :rolleyes1 thanks Best Buy for good return policy :rotfl:

This one is really zoomed in day time with a moving subject

Here is an easy panaramic

Here is how much it can zoom in

And here is fireworks (no tripod, nighttime mode not firework)

My one problem is every once in a while a green line shows up on my pics

DSCN1375 by calliegirl1990, on Flickr

And the dark ride photo's don't turn out well cause it needs to be really stable and the exposure is to long so the ride moves too much

Hope this helps :thumbsup2

Could someone give me an opinion of a Canon PowerShot SX130-IS? Looking for something easy to use that will not give me blurry pictures and will take nice night-time pictures of the Castle, parades, fireworks, etc. Currently have a Sony CyberShot W370 and am not happy with it.

I have a Canon PowerShot SX210 IS, and the reason I'm reading this thread is because I am looking for a new camera. I've had it for about a year and a half and I've never really been happy with it or impressed with the pictures it takes.

I'm looking at Nikon, Canon, and Olympus and am so torn on which to go with! But cagirl4life's fireworks shot with the Nikon S9100 almost has me sold on that one! I have never been able to get good fireworks shots with any of the Canon P&S's that I've had!

Awesome feedback going on here!! Thanks everyone :)

I bought the Nikon S8100 at costco, but have read terrible reviews on it so I haven't opened it yet. Error messages occuring for lots of folks rendering it useless. Anyone have this camera?

Costco also has in stock now:

Sony Cybershot HX9V for about $260
Nikon S8200 for about $270
Canon Powershot SX230 for $280

We have a sony cybershot now, but it's almost 5 years old and is going. We have a Nikon D90 also, but really need a p&s as I carry it around in my purse all the time as we have a DD4.

We are going to DL really soon (like in 10 days) and I want to get a new p&s. Don't know whether to keep the original nikon I bought and hope for the best (I got it for $180) or one of the above.

I wanna have a decent zoom, pretty fast shutter speed, and good in different light settings.

Thanks!

In addition to getting a p&s for our trip, we also need a new camcorder. All these reviews and such are driving me crazy!!! I'm so confused :confused3

Just to let you know that Costco will have a BF special on the Cannon Elph 310 for $199. Although the Cannon Powershot SX230 may be a better camera for $280, I may save the $$ and go with the Elph 310.

Happy shopping!

wow, that's a great deal. Only problem is we leave on Thanksgiving day to CA. We don't go to DL until Sunday, so it could be doable, but do I want to chance it, hummmm. Do you know what the regular price is?

After reading this thread and doing some further research I ordered a Canon ELPF 300 and I love it :) The night time and low light pics are great as are the others I've taken while testing the camera. I just ordered a Canon ELPH 310 on amazon for $229. I'll be giving the 300 to my DD as an early gift for our Disneyland trip

We have both been frustrated by the low light and night time pics we can get with our Nikon DSLR and were looking for a camera that could take good night time pics without a lot of "fussing" and I wanted a good small camera too:thumbsup2

Love, love , love the ELPH 300 :goodvibes just what I was looking for!!!

Cheryl - WOW - you must live just up the street from me! Looks like we'll be at DL about the same time. I guess I should find my old lime green mickey head to display on my bag in case we should cross paths!

SO glad you like the Cannon ELPH 300 - I am going to be first in line at Costco a week from Friday to grab the 310 for $199. :cool1: I hear it is a nice little step up from the 300, so I am excited!

Like Cheryl mentioned it is at $229 on Amazon right now. Costco is saying it is $60 off - but maybe that is because they include a case and small memory card, and amazon does say their price is $30 off, so technically I guess the 310 is normally $259/ $260. Not sure how it would work with your plans to fly out on Thanksgiving - may be worth it to go with Amazon.

We don't have a Costco membership or I would wait until next week, but I thought $229 was a fair price :) I want to have time to try out the new camera before our trip.

Hey Everybody - Just an update that the Cannon Elph 310 is on Amazon now for $199 and "receive an AmazonBasics Mini-HDMI cable and 4GB Class 10 SD memory card at no additional cost"

Still deciding here

BUT - someone here explain memory cards to me in terms of speed. What should I be looking at to buy. Thanks!:goodvibes

I was at costco here in Hawaii yesterday and they already had the Canon 310 hs at 199, came with a case and memory card, the worker said it is that price for 3 more days (so until Wed).

I'm so confused what to buy, should I keep my Nikon s8100, haven't used it, or return it and get the Canon 310 hs or do I splurge and get the canon sx230. I have one more day to decide, ughhh

That is what is so strange about the Costco thing because it says it ends wed., but then there is a "coupon" for the same deal starting Thurs.

I actually bought it at Costco today, but haven't opened it. When I saw I could chose a color, buy a case on Amazon and get the memory card all for about $15 less because of no tax, I may go that route and return at Costco.

Good luck on your decision - but more importantly - have a great trip!

Dump it!
There I made the decision for you so you can blame me if it was a bad one. If the reviews are not favorable for the Nikon probably best to get a different camera. The Elph is a great deal but it is not a super zoom (8x is great for the size though). However $280 is a lot more for the sx230.
It's hard to reccomend as there are not many quality reviews on point and shoot type cameras anymore. Just don't expect any point and shoot or super zoom to do well or be fast in darker settings.

Some P&S cameras have a fireworks mode setting. If any camera has this you'll most likely get a good shot. Also, maybe you just didn't check to see if your 210 has said mode or have you tried the nightshot mode? Night time modes don't always work with fireworks well though. Just making sure you tried the settings first before you gave up on it.

I've decided to get the Canon S95 and was checking Amazon to see if the price dropped on the Canon S95 it's still at $289.00
but did see that the Canon sx230hs is at $199.00 if anyone is keeping there eye out on that one!!

THANK YOU!!! :worship::worship::worship:
This is what I wanted after seeing Astylla's pcitures, but really couldn't spend more than $199. What a great deal! I ordered it and am thrilled. SO glad and thankful you took the time to post this. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Your both welcome!!, glad that someone was able to benefit the price reduction, now only if the Canon S95 go down in price:)
