Hi there! I'm completely new to Disneyland, and I'm looking for advice on where to stay. I'm looking for something super cost-effective, but also close enough that the kids can handle the walk after a long day. We're also hoping for a kitchen or kitchenette. Any advice would be great - thank you :)

The closest with a kitchen would probably be the Home2Suites.
The next closest would probably by the Residence Inn that's behind California Adventure.
You could also book a suite at the Hyatt House that includes a kitchen or go a bit further to the Homewood Suites.

Any further than that would not really be walkable. The Residence Inn is probably the highest quality while the Homewood Suites would usually be the cheapest.

The Tropicana Inn has some suites/rooms with kitchens. I've never stayed in one of them but have stayed in regular rooms at the Tropicana and it's one of my favorites for great location (literally right across the street from the Harbor park entrance) and pretty affordable (at least for regular rooms- not sure on the kitchen suites).
Tropicana Inn Room Types

I think some of the other independent hotels on Harbor also have a couple of family suites with kitchens/kitchenettes as well. Hopefully others will chime in with some suggestions.

Most of the Harbor hotels have microwaves and mini-fridges. Desert Inn is right at the crosswalk and is usually the least expensive of the closest places. It is very basic but clean.

We're big fans of the Courtyard Marriott Theme Park Entrance. 15 min walk to the gates, you have some food options along the walk (Panera, McDonald's, Mimi's) and the rooms are fantastic for families.

Can’t get much closer than Park Vue Inn. Their 2 queen/sofa sleeper one BR units have a kitchen. It is directly across the esplanade on south harbor

Cost Effective
Close to Park
Kitchenette

Only hotel that meets all those items is the Tropicana suites (regular rooms only have microwave and mini fridge).

Home2suites is a close second but it's about 1 mile walk to park entrance, while the Tropicana is across the street.

Now if a kitchenette is not important, there are many other options on Harbor. It just depends on what suits your families needs.

I'm not sure if they have any kitchenettes in the suites, but last month I stayed at Park Vue Inn directly across the street. I stayed in a standard room with a refrigerator and microwave. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Their suites have varying degrees of kitchenettes. We've had a mini-stove (oven + cooktop) in some, and just a hot plate in another. No idea what room has what set up or why. Both times we stayed in a suite with 2 queens in one room and a fold out couch, dining table, kitchenette, and vanity in the other room; exact same room type, only difference was the stove vs cook top.

Close + super cost-effective: Desert Inn and Suites. About $140/night for their 2 queen rooms, a bit closer to $200 for their family suites. It's 1 motel down from the pedestrian entrance.

Close + kitchenette: Tropicana family suite or Park Vue Inn's suites. Looking around $200+ a night. Park Vue is *at* the crosswalk for the pedestrian entrance, and Tropicana is 1 motel beyond the same crosswalk.

We stay at Desert Inn and Suites most often. If you reserve their executive rooms or their family suites, they are closer to the front of the building, and have been updated more recently than their regular rooms. We typically choose Desert Inn and Suites because it's close, it's clean, and it's (relatively) cheap for area. Your signature says you've been to WDW several times; Desert Inn and Suites is along the lines of a WDW value level, The 2 queen rooms are larger at Desert Inn and Suites, but not as recently updated as All Star Movies, for example.

FYI: I just measured the walking distance and it shows a half mile from the hotel entrance to security.

My mistake and I just looked it up.

Home2 Suites by Hilton is 0.6 miles and 13 minute walk time. I must have mistaken that for Homewood Suites by Hilton which is 1.0 mile and 20 minute walk time.

Clementine Hotel and Suites used to be a Residence Inn. We have really liked it in the past. Pool is open after the park closes, it is quiet, and I believe it was remodeled when t moved from Marriott to a private company.
