Best place to sell an old diamond ring?

Hey all.

I have an old diamond ring that I need to sell in order to pay some bills. It's in perfect condition and still under the lifetime warranty; but when I tried to take it back to the store, they wouldn't take it and will only give me store credit. So I don't know what to do. I'm not expecting full value on it, but I was hoping for at least half.

Any suggestions?

The store not taking it back is a good indication of how much it's actually worth. Try Craigslist but offer to meet anyone who wants to look at it in a jewelry store not at your house. You can ask 50% of what you paid but we buy jewelry and see others buy it all the time and it rarely goes for more than 20% of appraisal unless it's an exceptional piece.

We looked into selling a barely worn diamond bridal set a few months back. DH paid over $2200 for it about 15 years ago. The most we were offered was $235 from jewelers in our area. I tried selling it on eBay for $400 and got ZERO bids.

ETA: We're keeping it and going to have the stones reset into a ring or pendant for me.

ETAA: The money we were offered from jewelers was for the gold. They all said that the diamonds weren't worth anything.

Are the diamonds certified? Do you have any proof that the diamonds are real?

I remember when shopping for DW's engagement ring that there are some REALLY horrible diamonds on the market and if a buyer isn't savvy and the salesmen isn't 'good' you can walk out with a real hunk of carbon.

I looked at one diamond that - while it was HUGE - is had a VERY visible chunk of carbon that was visible to the naked eye. From a distance the stone was beautiful - but through the loupe it was awful - and once you know something like that is there - you seen it every time you look at the diamond.

I never realized how important quality, cut, and clarity are to the price of a diamond. But as soon as I realized what I was looking for - I looked EVERYWHERE! I finally found the perfect stone - for the perfect girl!

Diamonds aren't sold based on rarity or worth like any other gemstone in the world, they're just controlled by a monopoly so the price is artificially high. Second hand diamonds aren't really worth too much honestly, because diamonds aren't wroth too much. Good luck selling it. Its probably "worth" a quarter of what it originally cost. You could check pawn shops or maybe local jewelers who will buy the diamond based on if they're able to reset it and resell it.

I would take it to different jewelers, too. I wish you good luck with this.

:)

Pre-owned diamonds aren't worth a lot of money to anyone, unless you are talking about a very large expensive diamond. Sadly, with the price of gold these days, you may get more for your setting than the diamond.

If you are looking to get some cash from your jewelry, have you considered selling your gold jewelry?
