Thanks

I always get mine from the post office, commision free and a rate that is pretty good.

I bought dollars for the kid's pocket money today from the post office @ $1.5517.

About a month ago when I bought our own dollars and travellers cheques it was $1.62.

Why spend money on travellers cheques. Why not just use a credit card and pay it off when you return from your holiday.

Also many places in the US are now asking for photo ID - passport - when paying for goods etc.

We have been going to Orlando for many years now and have never used travellers cheques. Never encountered any problems using credit card.

I agree traveller's cheques aren't necessary. Cash and cc cover a;; eventualities, however we prefer to have access to more ready cash than we actually take with us and not to have to resort to taking cash from atm's which can be expensive.

Also I can chose in advance the rate at which I buy them and if they are not all used can be saved for next trip.

Just a matter of personal preference I suppose

I always get them from my bank. Commission free and any un-used ones I can use them on my next trip.

Marks and Spencers always seem to have a good rate, but I think you need one of their Chargecards to order money - might not do if you go into a store with a bureux de change.

On a slight aside - What credit cards do the people who suggested just using them have as all mine have a surcharge for buying goods in another country and the rate of exchange isn't as good either.

I have: American Express Platinum, HSBC Gold Card, and an egg card. All of these have up to a 3% surcharge, plus the reduced ROE.

We use Nationwide CC....no foreign currency loading:bounce: :bounce:

We also use Nationwide Current Account cards for withdrawals at overseas ATMs....again we get the full market rate and no charge for withdrawal by Nationwide (watch out for local ATMs which charge though).
