We are planning to drive to DisneyWorld soon and we are looking for a good place to stop in New Jersey. We would be on 1-95 and want to be away from NYC! Any Suggestions from my New Jersey friends. We prefer to stop not in one of the major New Jersey cities also!

I'd aim for getting past DC before stopping for the night, and avoid I-95 going through NYC - go over the Tappanzee instead.

When we drive down from northern MA, we head down 495, then the pike, and as far away from NYC as possible. We start out very early in the morning, and make it to North Carolina before we even think of stopping for the night.

If you are planning on heading out after evening rush hour, you could get a lot farther than New Jersey, couldn't you?

I agree with Schmeck. South of DC should be your goal. Also, NJ is not known for any major cities. The cities closest to I-95 are Newark, Trenton & Camden. I promise you... you don't want to stay any where near these places. You really should find a hotel/motel in Virginia, at least.

Good luck, and have a great trip!!!

Yes, you want to avoid the Cross Bronx Expressway unless you have no other options. Tappan Zee can be bad w/ construction lately. Listen to traffic reports. If TZ is no good, you should be able to pick up the Merritt Pkwy in CT from I-95. It turns into the Hutchinson Pkwy (S) once you hit NY State. Stay on the Hutch and follow signs for Cross County Pkwy towards Henry Hudson Pkwy (S) and take that to the GWB. You will avoid all the traffic on th CBxE and the Deegan. GWB then runs into I95 on the Jersey side.

Hi -

I was wondering if you could make it through Jersey into Essington, PA. Its a small town just a teeny bit south of the Philly airport. Its very easy on/off I95 -there is a Ramada, Quality, Red Roof and 1 or 2 more. The zip code is 19029

The best place in Jersey would be to Drive straight through Jersey and find a place in another state. I've driven as far as South Carolina from Haverhill in 1 shot although I was beat. I would shoot at least for DC or North Carolina.

You could also stop in Delaware (home of tax free shopping). Dover has a ton of hotels because of the Nascar races, and then you could take the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and avoid DC all together the next day......

Just a little plug for my little old home state.

I don't know if you're still looking for somewhere in NJ. I regularly (every 2 weeks) drive between NJ and Boston and avoid the Cross-Bronx and GWB at all costs. I take the Mass Pike to 84 to 684 (sometimes to the Sawmill Parkway) to 287 to the Tappan Zee and head down the Garden State Parkway. (You would then pick up the NJ Turnpike/I95 down in Edison, NJ at exit 129.) If you do end up going this way, there's a Crown Plaza at exit 135 (Clark, NJ) that my sister-in-law and my dad and stepmom have stayed at and been very happy. However, it's only 5 or so hours from Boston, so you may want to get further along.

I agree, we drive from about 10 miles north of Boston, and our first stop is in NJ for gas. We like to get at least to Fayetteville or Lumberton, NC.

If you are thinking of leaving after rush hour - you may be better off going home getting to sleep and getting up around 2 am and leave then. We usually leave between 2 and 4 am.

thou i agree i would try to get thru washington if your going to stop in nj get down to exit 3 off the turnpike there are alot of motels and places to eat right off the exit and at least you are almost all the way thru nj:banana:

If you still want to stop in NJ there are alot of hotels at NJ Turnpike exit 4. I think this is considered Mount Laurel.

If you want to travel about 30-40 minutes further, at Exit 1, just before you get to Delaware there are hotels as well, including a Hampton Inn.

Most of the hotels would be easy access. These are not cities and are considered relatively safe areas.

I would not look near the Philadelphia airport in Essington, PA since although that would be I-95, it is not a direct route since at that point the NJ Turnpike is not I-95. You would need to divert about 30 minutes from your direct route, through Philadelphia, to get there.

Hope this Helps.

Steve

They just opened a new Hilton Garden Inn right at Exit 5 off the NJ Turnpike. Right across the street there is a Cracker Barrel and an Applebees. Also, about a mile down 541 (the main road right at the exit) there is a Friday's, Burger King and Target.

just to clarify if you chose to use these directions (which is always the way i go between my home in CT and my mom and dad's in NJ), pick up the merritt from i-95 in Milford, CT and take it all the way to westchester (it becomes the hutchinson river parkway when you cross from CT into NY). once you are on the cross county, you need to follow signs for the saw mill parkway which turns into the henry hudson. you won't necessarily see signs for the henry hudson while you are on the cross county.
