DD is a lefty and says her ink always smears. She mostly uses pencils but 1 teacher requires they write in ink.

So does anyone have any suggestions for pens that won't smear?

I've found that they all smear to some degree. The worst pens are the erasable ones - definitely don't buy those! With erasables, my hand erases the words as I write them. :scared1:

My daughter's class requires these. She a lefty, she hates them, and so I - her hand comes home covered in ink (and sometimes her clothes, too, if her hand rubs against them too much).

my left handed husband says that the jetstream pen is the best. They are extremely fast drying, so that when your hand goes over the written words they are not wet so they don't smudge. He did a lot of research as nicely handwritten reports are required at his work (a private college). He orders them from WBMason by the box but has never looked for them in a store.

We also order him nice leather lefty portfolios from a left handed company in the UK.

I'm left handed and find ball point pens work best. Gel pens smear WAY too much. I really like the simple black Bic pens that come in those 12 pack boxes at Staples. They don't smear as much.

I aree with the Bic sentiment. Papermate are by far the worst. (although my favorite) to write with. Oddly enough, I find the pens you get in hotels to be the best ones. Weird.

A lot of it is going to come down to trial and error. Not only do I hate erasable pens, but I have a serious dislike for bics, papermate, etc. What I currently use (most of the time) is Uniball Vision Micro, although there are a couple models of Pilot that I don't mind too much.

The best thing to do (although it can get pricey) is buy one each of several different types of pens - gel, ballpoint, etc. Get different colors too - I would swear that the blue ink (for example) of one of the Pilot pens I use dries more slowly than the black in the same model, because the blue smears and the black doesn't.

Once you find one that she likes, buy as many as you can. As is the case with so many other things, as soon as you find something you like, they discontinue it.

I prefer to use a fine point pen rather than a medium point pen.

I use the sharpie pens as well. They don't smear nearly as much as others. Those gel ones are the worst! But honestly, this is just one of the things that lefties just have to deal with all their lives. When I found the notebooks with the spirals on the top, I thought I had died and gone to heaven.:rotfl2:

If your daughter needs erasable pens, try the Pilot Frixion. I use these and find they don't smear as much as other erasable pens, because they erase via heat from friction or something rather than just an eraser... if that makes sense. I don't even need erasable pens (though they come in handy) and I love these pens.

My favorite was made by Sanford, it was called Aspire. They no longer make it. Iknow they sell a new version but for the life of me I can not remember what it is called.
Not a fan of the Sharpie pen, they write too much like a felt tip pen.

Thank you all so much!! I am going to bring her to office depot tomorrow and buy a pack of every kind mentioned. I am in school too, so what she can't use I will :)

ITA with the blue ink thing! I prefer blue ink but sadly the black is better for me.
