Best painless "stretching things" budget tips?

What is TVP? :confused3[/QUOTE]

TVP is texturized Vegetable Protein. Comes in different forms and "sizes" to mimic ground meat. Has no taste on its own (like tofu) and takes on flavor of whatever you cook it in.,

Where can you get TVP? that sounds interesting and an easy way to sneak veggies into DH & DD diet :rolleyes1

When I make a hamburger-helper-type dish I only use 1/2 to 3/4 pounds of meat instead of a whole pound. Couple this with a veggie and rolls or cheap biscuits and no one notices the missing meat :stir:

I also wait until hambuger is on sale and only buy it at the meat counter. I HATE HATE HATE that the pre-packaged packages never ever have a pound of meat in the them--always way more. :furious:

I stretch by using half ground beef and half TVP - NO ONE in my family has even noticed and TVP is waaaaayyyy cheap :cool1:

At my store the bigger "family packs" are usually a lot cheaper than the smaller packs so I just buy the big pack and re-wrap it into smaller sizes and then freeze. Saves lots of money. I just bought 97% lean ground beef for $1.29/lb!

Thanks to everyone for all the great tips!:cool1: This one may not add up to much but I always have a straw in my drink at home (usually Diet Coke, I'm sprung!::yes::) and try to remember to just rinse and reuse. Get into the habit and a pack of straws will last forever!

I brown it before I freeze it, put abount a pound in a quart freezer bag and freeze flat. This way when I have forgotten to set anything out, I can quickly grabbed one bag for dinner. I throw it right in for taco, spaghetti, etc. No need to thaw in the microwave, being flat it thaws really fast on the stove or in the sauce. This is the best thing I have ever done for convenience sake. :cool1:

That is a great idea! :stir: It's amazing to hear tips from others...makes me wonder why I can't come up with things like that!

Our local theater has free family movies on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:00 am during the summer. http://www.regmovies.com/nowshowing/familyfilmfestivalschedule.aspx
I even "sneak" in healthy snacks and water. No one at the theater cares on those days. Yesterday we saw the Veggie Tales pirate movie and it was pretty good.

Also, story time at the library (this is not a novel idea, but a lot of people forget). We go every week they have it and then get books to read. My daughter loves it - so do I - it is educational and free.

I do this too. It's an awesome time saver. I've read that a pound of browned meat is about 2 1/2 cups. I ususally package about 2 cups or slightly less to freeze (1 1/2 just wasn't enough in some recipes with sauce). I make small snack size baggie packs of about a half cup or less, too for homemade pizza toppings. (I put all the snack size packs in a larger pack so they don't get lost in the freezer.)

Thanks for that! I had no idea free movies existed! What a great way to see if DD 3 1/2 is ready for that. LOL Didn't want to pay a million to take her & have to leave. Wish there was a closer theater, though. THe closest to me is about 25 min away. :-( Still worth it to get out of the house.

I use the dryer sheets to clean my bathtub and shower.Save them as you take out the clothes from the dryer.I was amazed at how clean my shower got.I also clean with baking soda ..it is only 30 cents at wally world.

I tried the dryer sheet to clean the shower with and it worked! Thanks for the tip. I tried baking soda in the bathtub, but my son said it was slippery, but it works great for getting hairspray and makeup off of the counters. Much easier than with cleaner.

Another "life altering" :rotfl: tip I have been taking advantage of for a couple of years now is boiling ground beef in large quantities instead of frying it! Sounds gross but it really doesn't alter the taste and its quick and easy to boil and package in freezer bags frozen flat (as others have mentioned) for quick-fix meals!

The more thrifty among us even use the "stock" after cooking the ground beef as a soup base! :rotfl2:

ETA:There is a ton more info and ideas and specs for cooking ground beef this way at Hillbilly Housewife!

Keep your car tires properly inflated (check once a month) to reduce extra wear and tear on the tires and get better mileage. Don't allow your car to idle...if you are going to be stopped for over a minute, shut it off. Combine errands rather than making several different trips. Drive moderately rather than aggressively...accelerate gradually to reach your desired speed, then ease off on the gas and allow the car to slow itself down rather than driving quickly until you need to jump on the brakes. Check your air filter, replace it if it's clogged (they are not very expensive). Keep your A/C at a moderate setting, or turn it off and circulate fresh air with the fan if it's not really necessary.

I ran out of dryer sheets - and I've NEVER used fabric softener. So I wanted something to cut down on static.

A seach of the internet turned up: hair conditioner, vinegar and water. I had cheap hair conditioner I didn't like - I had vinegar and water comes out of the tap.

Combine (one part vinegar, one part conditioner, four parts water). Wet a small washcloth (like with the fabric softener), throw in with the laundry. Works fine.

Other theaters usually do something similar. In our area Rave, AMC, Cinemark & a few regional chains offer some form of Summer Movie Camp. So, check out other theaters that might be closer to home & you might be surprised.
