Ok, I had a hard time with this. I'm torn between The Sugar Hill Gang, and Run DMC.

I like Run DMC better but IMO, SHG was a lot more influential.

Run DMC are the godfathers of rap. Gil Scott-Heron is the great grandfather.

I loved the Sugar Hill Gang - Rappers Delight and Apache (which is now stuck in my head for the rest of the night!) I like Run DMC too, but Sugar Hill Gang gets my vote!

Sugar Hill Gang-Rappers Delight immediately popped into my head when I read the title!

Run DMC....My Adidas, Mary Mary, King of Rock, You Be Illin.

Good lord, I'm a 37 year old housewife. :rotfl2:

I forgot about You Be Illin! That was a good one!

I swear that one of the Disney Channel Interstitials, "Clap your Hands" reminds me of "She's On It", so much so that I end up using those words instead of the real ones when I hear it!

and really if we are talking pre 1995 (I mistakenly thought '85) you really have to include
Will Smith
Public Enemy/Ice T
NWA/Dre/Easy Z/Ice Cube
Queen Latifa
Digital Underground

even Snoop and Tupac had broken through since 1995

:rotfl2: You literally made me LOL so hard my kids came in to see what was so funny...this from a 33 yo housewife who is loving hearing all these old songs. ;)

Don't push me 'cuz I'm close to the edge,
I'm tryin' not to lose my head.

It's like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder
how I keep from going under.

-Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five

Digital Underground for sure - Can you get any better than the Humpty Dance.

I love the Humpty Dance but wasn't pretty much their only hit?

Only hit - pretty much but they were infulentual. They broke though when the gansta rap of NWA and Public Enemy was dominating the scene. Brought hip hop to the mainstream white kid. Reintroduced us to George Clinton/P-Funk. Launched the career of Tupac Shakur and

Of course "The Sugarhill Gang" comes to mind but I have to give it up for
GrandMaster Flash & The Furious Five.

He is the creator of scratchin' and had developed Rap in so many ways.

Wow!! These bring back great memories of HS and College. I agree with most especially the Sugar Hill Gang, Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five but I would like to add the following:
Salt N Pepa - loved "Push It"
Kool Moe Dee - " Wild, Wild West"
Doug E. Fresh

I will now end this with the fine words of Kurtis Blow:
"These are the breaks! Break it up! Break it up! Break it up! Break Down!"
