best makeup at makeup counter for 12 year old?

My daughters birthday is coming up and she needs more makeup. I wanted to take her to bloomingdales or macys to have them put makeup on her and find some good colors for her. Any recommendations for a brand? She only wears basic natural stuff. She wears light eyeshadows, mascara, and clear lip gloss. I use to wear estee lauder, but I just don't like the quality of their stuff anymore.

Sephora has very nice stuff and is marketed to a younger crowd. I also like clinique, most of their stuff is made for sensitive skin and they always have nice colors already together in sets.

I used to work at a Clinique counter and I definitely recommend it for a younger girl. Very gentle and the colors are usually young and fresh. It's also one of the most affordable of the department store brands.

My own 12 yr old wears Clinique. Right now she uses a pressed powder ( I think Super Double face powder ), a light, natural eyeshadow, minimal eyeliner, mascara, and a lipgloss. Then we have a separate set of makeup for dance competitions It took a bit for her to understand that the dance makeup was not an everyday look!!!!

I don't have her on Clinique 3 step skin care yet but I use it. Right now, she removes makeup with makeup removing wipes and washes with Cetaphil.

Clinique is my favorite for my daughter. Not only is it gentle on her skin, but the colors are the most easily matched. There's nothing worse than seeing a young girl (or anyone for that matter) wearing make up that is too dark, or doesn't match, and at that age they have a hard time being realistic about what looks good on them. My daughter wears Clinique and the sales people are very knowledgable about what colors go together and will look best on her.

Plus, if you time it right, you can make your purchase when they're offering one of their promos and get a nice free gift!

Well my 12 year old doesn't wear makeup (outside of the house) but her older sister is turning 16 and I'm either taking her to Sephora (if we are at Disney) or Macy's to get her makeup done on her birthday. I'm planning on buying her some good makeup for her birthday.

bare minerals. I use this and my teenage nieces love it and they have both switched as has their mother and 2 of my sister in laws. It is so light, has SPF protect covers well yet you can hardly tell it's there and it lasts forever. I usually only need to restock my cover up every year or so though I only wear makeup some times. If i used it every day the starter kit would probably last me four months. If you have a bare esscentuals store or a sephora store they will put it on you so you can see it and help pick the colors. I will never use another make up again. I have spent so much money in the past on every darn brand out there and nothing comes even remotely close. I like there eye shadows and blushes too, but the foundation is just amazing. I just did my neighbor girls make up for prom this past weekend and she couldn't believe how much better my make up looked then hers and how light and comfortable it was to wear. I believe people also sell small samples on ebay too.

My daughters are 15 and 17 and have been wearing Bare Minerals ever since they started wearing makeup. It's very natural looking and has SPF in it. Some of the bigger malls have a Bare Minerals store and they can do color matching and teach her how to use their products. We started out with a Basic Kit which came with brushes, foundation color, blush color, and other goodies. We swear by Bare Minerals!

check out Origins (an estee lauder company). They are big on being natural and eco-friendly, and the colors tend to be more natural (great for younger faces!) plus everything smells really good (they like to use a lot of essential oils like orange and mint)

I would definitely recommend either Bare Escentuals Bare Minerals or Clinique products. If she has very fair skin, Clinique may not be the best choice. My skin is very fair and I have very limited choices in foundation from the Clinique counter (or most brands for that matter). Their foundation tends to turn orange on my skin.

Bare Minerals would be a great way for her to start experimenting with makeup, and it's almost foolproof to apply. It is probably the most natural makeup I've seen (or used) and it is all non-comedogenic.

Wait, do you mean people shop Clinique when they're not doing the free gift promotion?! It's ways so awesome, it would never even cross my mind not to wait. Seriously, I am SO low on foundation, but I'm waiting. I love their makeup, and the full sized gifts, plus I found that the free makeup is usually pretty neutral. I do have WAY too many makeup bags now, though.

Dd15 wears shadow, blush, mascara, and eyeliner (the last being added in HS). She's starting to break out a little (here and there), so only now needs some kind of base. In 6th grade, she wore very light shadow and blush.

Definately a personal parent choice. My oldest dd will be 11 later this year. I'm considering 13/14 before it's allowed outside of the house. The same will go for my youngest dd. But again it's a personal choice. I think my reasoning is that I am in my 30s and have worn make-up a total of 3 times (2 proms and my wedding).

It is really a personal choice you have to make for her. I personally do not think natural looking (light, neutral colors) makeup whether it be foundation, powder, eyeshadow, eyeliner, blush, or mascara is inappropriate for a 12 year old to wear out of the house. I think the problem is that some kids wear super bright or dark colors and makes them look...umm...inappropriate. I would stay away from blue eyeshadow, bright blush, and lipstick. A tinted lipgloss would be a great place for them to start, as well as neutral blushes and eyeshadows. Maybe let her try a tinted moisturizer rather than actual foundation and a transluscent powder.

If I had a daughter that age I would take her to the Bobbi Brown counter. I like both the products and her philosophy.

Another plug for Bare Minerals! Their makeup is light - so she's not going to look "painted" - and their colors are beautiful. It's all I'll ever use (although I am a recovering MAC junkie, and some MAC still seeps in once in a while...).

Also, their makeup is paraben free (the reason why I'm leaving MAC...their products aren't). You might want to look into this - I'm now a firm believer in using products that contain as few chemicals as possible.

12is usually the norm for wearing light, age appropriate makeup in our circle. This is probably when I will start allowing it for DD. I don't see anything wrong with a little powder, blush and light shadow/ mascara at that age. I have seen some girls that age with WAY too much on or the wrong colors though.

I am fair and cannot get sufficient coverage from bare minerals. My mom and sister are daker and have better luck. I personally use clinique double face powder foundation. I hate liquids and thisis the best coverage I have found in a powder.

Another vote for Bare Minerals - it is so very natural both in composition and look. It is gentle on the skin and doesn't clog pores. Do go to the makeup counter and get a demonstration - application can take some getting used to.

I agree with many of the women that Bare Minerals is the way to go! I have been wearing it for almost 8 yrs and I would never ever switch back to anything else!
If you go into a Sephora, they will do a Bare Minerals make UNDER for your daughter. The look is natural and simple. Its also actually GOOD for your skin, so that is also a plus. It is so light to wear, she will not even know she is wearing makeup. She will also like all the compliments on how great her skin looks.
Sephora sells a starter kit for I believe right around $60 that has everything she will need to get started. It is also nearly goof proof. She will feel like an old pro at putting on her make up in no time!
