Has anyone obtained a home equity loan lately? Can you recommend a good lender with low rates? Are the "internet only" lenders just scams? One time about two years ago I filled out an on-line request for info on a home equity loan and I am STILL getting calls and emails from lenders. Our credit rating is excellent.

I used a credit union. They had the lowest rate and no hassles.

I know what you mean about getting the solicitations though. I went through Lending Tree last year for a possible refinance and they just about drove me nuts.

We would go through our credit union because they seem to have better rates and we can deal with them directly if we had any questions.

I was afraid that a credit union would be the answer. When the newspaper publishes the best rates, the credit unions are always the lowest. Unfortunately, I'm not a member of a credit union.

I used Lending Tree in December to refinance. I gave my cell phone number as the contact and asked them to use strictly that or my email address (you can set up a special one for that purpose).

My home equity was thru Hudson City Savings in NJ -- they had a special at the time $15,000 for 30 years at 3%. Couldn't beat that!

What about Citi, they have a great website that gives you a lot of information on their products and rates, you can apply online or call the 800 number. Their website is citimortgage.com. (My DH is a director over there so I am completely biased :goodvibes ... but they are good #1 in the Country)

I don't know if you have tried lending tree... they might be the one that you are getting calls from????? But I heard they are good, quick and competitive.

Good Luck....

My boyfriend is a lender with Sterling National Mortage. They are a bank based here in New York, but he handles loans all over the country.

PM me if you want his direct phone number or email, I'm sure he'd be happy to answer some of your questions.

Many credit unions are now community chartered---meaning all you need is to live in a certain area to be able to join. Give a few a call. You may find one nearby!

Ditech.com is pretty good. They are part of GMAC which has been around for years. But, I would check with your current mortgage holder first. They will often give you a great rate on a 2nd.
