I just received my renewal for our package policy of auto, home and an umbrella. It is over $4300. I have been with this company over 10 years but I think it is time to change. I simply can't afford this premium. I spoke with Geico and they are more reasonably priced for the auto and umbrella. Homeowners I would have to go elsewhere as they are sky high! Any recommendations for any companies keeping in mind affordability and claim service. (we are not military so USAA is out!) Thanks!

Where do you live? (so posters in your state can suggest specific companies)

That has been my experience with GEICO too, so we just keep our homeowners with another company. As long as we provide them proof that we're carrying as much as they require for the umbrella policy it has been fine.

Is that an option for you?

Thanks for the replies thus far. I am in Illinois, living in a suburb of Chicago. I just received quotes from Geico today and the auto and umbrella are very reasonable. THe homeowners is double what I pay! Any thoughts on Geico? I was not too happy with the 6 month renewals as the rate can change rapidly. Also, the online review of their claims process and their non renewals make me a bit nervous. I've been with my present carrier for 10 years and never had a claim so I have little experience in this area.

I am in Illinois as well, and we just got quotes thru a bunch of companies for our insurance and ended up switching to Travelers, they had the best rates by far.

I don't believe you have to be military anymore to qualify for USAA. I got quotes from them last summer and we're not military. I also got quotes from Progressive, Geico, Allstate, State Farm, Liberty Mutual, etc. and the best quote I got was from GMAC...and GMAC gave me higher coverages too. They were lower for auto, home, and umbrella. They also give a lot of discounts too. Like paid in full discount, multi-line, college graduate, KOA member, Good Sam Member, deduction for driving a GM car, low mileage discount...and on an on.

I switched to Farm Bureau several years ago based on the wonderful service they gave a friend when he had a house fire and two totalled cars in one year. Most companies would have cancelled the policy, but he got nothing but great treatment.

We've had one auto claim and they were quick and efficient. They might not be the absolute cheapest, but I feel like I can trust them.

We're with Erie Insurance. Our auto premium dropped, probably because DH hit 60 this year.

My agent recommended against a package; can't remember why but she's a trusted friend and family member so I know it's not a profit thing for her. My totals are a little over half of the OP. We insure a large home, three vehicles, a large commercial trailer and a scooter. We have a very complete umbrella as well. Why not shop components?

Definitely shop around. We actually reduced our insurance bill this year despite our son's car accident. It took several hours on the phone to get all the info, but was well worth the savings.

We have all of our insurance through State Farm but it's not a package. We do get discounts for having our policies through them -- multi-car, umbrella is lower since auto insurance is also through them, accident-free, so many years with the company, and so on.

I live in a Chicago suburb as well. For more years than I care to admit, I have always gone thru an insurance broker (agent). They have several companies they work with, and my person at the agency price compares based on what we want. She switched us from Encompass to Travelers about 3 or 4 years ago. Travelers was great with a claim we recently had for water damage in the basement. We have auto, homeowners, and an umbrella with them.

usaa has opened eligiablity. they will now accept anyone who served honorably. even if it was only 3 years. they also have eligibility for certain agencies. such as FBI. worth calling to see if you can get quoted
there are some states that make them take anyone. but they dont avertise that LOL
