I have never colored my own hair. Paying the salon to color my hair is getting too expensive to continue. I want to color my own hair. Which brand is truer to the color shown on the box? I did buy Loreal but havent tried it yet.

I use Garnier Nutrisse and really like the non-chemical smell and the solution itself.

I'm sure that everyone has their own preference though. Good Luck with your inaugural try at it though!

Loreal. I used to have the salon do my hair but since I now have all over color I do it myself. Previously used Garnier but I find I have more shine with loreal.

I dont know about truer to the color on the box, but I have been using Loreal Excellence for years. Find a color that you like and stick with it. If it says golden or redish you will get those tones. I tend to switch back and forth between the Medium Golden Brown and Maple Brown (more of a redish tone). Good luck, I hope you find a color that you like :)

I colored my own hair for years, the salon is sooooo expensive! We have a Sally Beauty Supply store that I would buy my "salon type" hair color and mixer and supplies, I really liked the Mega Blonde line. I could buy all the necessary supplies for about $9. Now I have let my bleach blonde days go and have a natural red brown color that I need to cover my grays about every 3 months ! I like the John Freida foam stuff now!

I like LOreal. Easy, consistent, great conditioner included in the packaging. It is almost always on sale somewhere, and there are always coupons for it.

John Freida foam. Super easy to use and does a good job on grays. I use 5N.

I usually use the ColorSilk (I think Revlon?). It is always (every other week) on sale at either CVS or Walgreens for 2/$6. There is usually a coupon in the Sunday paper too. So I get them 2/$5. I find it works good enough for me. Never went to the salon for color so can't compare.

Agreed. I found basically their conditioner that comes in the box in a deep conditioning treatment they started offering this summer: EverSleek Deep Conditioner. It is pricy, but you only use it once a week or so. I have thick, dry, frizzy hair and that along with some styling oil has really, really calmed it down. Warning: the rose scent is very strong.

Glad you asked this. I have been getting more and more gray and I'd like to cover it, but I am way too cheap to pay for salon color.

I like L'Oreal brands, particularly Excellence, and Garnier is good too.

I find every Clairol brand to be way way darker than they should be. L'Oreal seems to be truer to the color on the box IMO.

This is what I bought (and it was on sale so that kind of prompted me to pick it :) )

Loreal Paris Excellence non-drip creme, it says triple protection color, 100% long lasting gray coverage

I chose the color 6G (light golden brown warmer) because I am naturally a brunette but have for years gotten the golden mixed in with my color. Also I am afraid of it turning out more on the darker side, so even though it says "light brown" the color choices shown on the box tend to be on the medium brown side. I consider light brown hair almost tending to the blond side, but the color on the box doesn't show it that light. So I guess I just have to try it but I just didn't want it to turn out too dark.

My sister in law suggested I cut the coloring time down from 20 to 15 minutes the first time because she says the longer you leave it on the darker it turns out. But I really want my gray covered, so won't that affect the gray coloring?

This is the brand my sister in law uses. She says she doesn't want to spend $6.00 on hair color (that's what I paid on sale). I just want to try and get a natural color so I'm not worried about a couple of bucks. It's all cheaper than the $40 I am paying!!!:goodvibes My sister in law loves the colorsilk.

Check out your local beauty supply store. Ask for help selecting the shade as they are different some times from the name of the color. I buy a huge bottle of developer, a couple tubes of the color and the bowl and brush to color. Good luck! I've been coloring my hair for almost 25 years and I'm only 37 (damn puberty!)...I've had lots of practice!!

Update:I used Loreal 6G Lught brown color. The color is a tad light but I'm happy with it. It didn't cover the grey as well as I would have hoped. I know I missed some areas but others should have colored better. I went for 30 minutes not the full 40. So maybe next time ill go the full 40. Any other brand better at covering the grey?

I always leave my color on the roots the extra 10 minutes. I find it covers the grays best that way.

I color my hair all time, whenever I get bored and want a change basically, so I've used a bunch of different brands. I like L'Oreal Feria, the colors are really nice and they usually have subtle highlights and good shine. Garnier is nice too, much better smelling! My new favorite is Fat Foam. It's sold in a big, red container and the color always turns out really nice! It's usually sold in CVS or Walgreens. The foam color is sooo much easier to use than the creme, especially if you're doing it yourself. And I have long, thick hair and I've never run out of color like I have with some other brands.

That was one question I had. I have shorter shoulder length hair. Should I have used up the whole bottle of color? It seemed like my hair was pretty saturated I constantly made sure it was rubbed into my scalp. I think I'll go to a 5N and leave it in the whole 40 minutes. Is John Freida any better than Loriel? It's twice the money!!
