In the times you may have visited Orlando - which hotel would you recommend to someone? Where did you find the best hotel for the price?

Depends.
For a Deluxe resort experience I found the Ritz gave the best "value" for my dollar. (Far exceeding the Disney "deluxe" experience at a much cheaper price!)

For a more economy trip I find that I like the Marriott Village resorts.

We had great luck renting a condo from an owner in the Grand Palms complex in Kissimmee. It was a short distance from WDW-10 minutes or so. I think the nightly rate was $65ish for a 3 bedroom, 2 bath condo! I loved having my own kitchen, washer and dryer (for the first time ever I came home from vacation without a mountain of laundry to do!), and the complex had a nice pool and hot tub. It wasn't a massive resort, but we enjoyed it. We found it on vacationrentals.com. VRBO.com has some great condos, too. I never want to stay in a hotel room again!

Thanks to this information I have cancelled my reservations at the meridian and instead have rented a lovely 3 bedroom villa with a private pool - for the same cost! I was shocked when I started researching vacation rentals in Orlando - there's a ton of them. And with a little digging I found a great price, great villa. I was a little skeptical that I might be scammed so I chose a rental place V&H Villas and Homes who is registered with BBB and Chamber of Commerce with satisfactory ratings. I even research to see if any complaints appeared anywhere online and found none. So I feel pretty secure we've chosen a reputable company.

Thank you so much for letting me in on this. I think my family of 6 will be much happier with a whole house to spread out in.

Congrats Suzybeezy! I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time! My brother and family rented a pool home a few years ago and loved it, and after our great luck with renting a condo last year, we're renting the same one for our trip in August. I was nervous at first renting from an owner, but we had great luck and went with them again. When I first mentioned going to Orlando again my DH asked if "our" condo was available. :)

glad you found something that worked for you!!!

houses, because there are so many of them, are generally a good buy for renters.

englishteacha, thank you SOOOOO much for that link. I found several really nice and extremely affordable condos for us. Most of the ones I looked at were 1 BR which is fine for us since it's only 2 adults and one child. I'm going to contact the person tomorrow (almost 8PM EST). It looks like a realtor b/c I saw their name on several listings. I hope we can snag one I saw and rates were $65 a night and 1 mile from Universal. They also had go karts, putt putt golf, CEC and lots of places to eat right by the place. One I looked at was only $325/5 nights plus tax. So much cheaper than staying at WDW even a value. We are only going to WDW for 2 days so only $20 for parking so it's much cheaper to stay off-site for us. Thanks again.

One more question? Do some of these have towels and linens or do you have to bring your own? I'm tight for space but just wondering how this works.

The the two villas with the pool we rented on two different occasions, both under $100/day. Nothing beats having a pool all to yourself even though we're just 2 ppl.

The Villa we're staying at includes all the linens and towels. I think most do - but you should definately ask that first. I also made sure to ask for pictures (other then on a website) and a complete list of everything that was included. And watch for extra costs. I inquired about 3 different villas. One seemed the cheapest until he started tacking on extra costs like for cleaning. The second one was a bit more expensive but seemed to have everything we wanted, but when I ask for its exact location to check on a map - it was very far away. We ended up selecting a villa from a company who was registered with the better business bureau and chamber of commerce and got to read some of their reviews. I think doing extensive research before paying is essential. Ultimately I think we chose the best villa at the same cost as the hotel we had reserved. Also i should add - speak to them on the phone - when I did - I got a nice discount off the price.
