My middle-schooler wants to listen to his ipod on the school bus, but it is too noisy on the bus. Any suggestions for reasonably priced headphones that will let him listen to music and shut out some bus noise?

They sell noise cancelling earbuds at walmart. I've had the best luck with the type that are cylndrical with a soft foam or cusion coating, they actually fit inside the ear, like an ear plug.

Mine are similar to the third pair, they are not noise canceling but since they fit inside the canal like a plug, I get very little background noise.

PS this assumes he dosen't get mugged his first day, or have his back pack stolen for the ipod, it happened to my godson.

Thanks. I'll check out Walmart.

He's been carrying his ipod for a while with no incidents. yet.

He is significantly larger than most of his classmates, which may help.

Please warn your children about hearing loss! So many of my students listen to their music so loudly in order to drown out other noise. I'm afraid they're going to really damage their hearing.

I just found my Marshmallow (brand) ear buds at Big Lots. It had the earphones plus replacement buds. My first set the "marshmallow" part pulled away from the hard plastic, so a little sore on the inner ear. The BL ones were $10 whereas W-Mart and Meijer were $15-$20.

As a bus driver I want to remind you that it is important for your child to be able to hear in case of an emergency. Our school district has a policy against using electronics on the bus. I enforce it as far as making sure all students can hear me. If I give a direction and students do not respond, I require them to remove their earphones. There was a bus fire with my routes return bus-I only drive them in-on Wednesday. They had to evacuate the bus. Luckily the kindergarteners were not riding as it was the 1st day of school and everyone else had been trained to evacuate AND could hear the driver. She said they were incredibly calm and responded quickly. Seriously, your child needs to be able to hear for their safety.

I'd double check with your school first regarding policy. Ours don't allow any electronic devices at school, busses included.

Our kids are allowed to have ipods, etc. on the bus. Theft doesn't seem to be an issue on the bus (obviously because the kids are USING them there, and the thieves don't want to take these expensive toys by force and have their identity known); however, theft is a huge issue during the rest of the school day. Our kids are very lax about watching their things -- leaving things in a locker with no lock, sharing their lock combination with friends, leaving things in a bookbag while they head to the cafeteria, leaving things in a bookbag in the locker room while they go to the gym for PE -- these are the places I hear theft occuring.

Noise cancelling headphones are much better for the child's long-term hearing. With cheaper headphones, the tendency is to turn the music up so it can be heard over other noises; with these better headphones, the extra volume isn't necessary.

I do agree that NOT hearing the bus driver is a huge safety concern. Also, I'd ask how long he rides the bus. If you're talking about a ten-minute ride like my older daughter, I'd say he doesn't need entertainment for that short period. On the other hand, if like my younger daughter he's unfortunate enough to ride for almost an hour a day, then a treat like this might be reasonable.

I would be worried also, about the safety issues. I told my DS12, he couldn't listen on the bus. I know even if we are in the car, he can't hear me talking to him. Anyway, an electronic store should have a good pair for noise cancelling.

Here too. In Jr. High they take any that they find and the parent has to come down to the school the next day during school hours to pick it up. Same goes for cell phones, if they see/hear one it is taken to the office and held for parental pick up.

Thank you all for suggestions and concerns.

Use of I-pods and cell phones is allowed on his bus.

I hadn't thought about the safety aspect. He tends to sit in the front, and will still be looking around... The bus is very crowded and they are asked to sit three to a sit. My son is 5' 10" and 180 lbs., as are a couple of his friends. I can't imagine him and his huge overstuffed backpack sharing a seat, let alone sharing with two others.

He wants noise cancelling so he doesn't have to have the volume super loud and hurt his ears.

Three to a seat in a high school bus is overcrowding, especially if it's the whole bus. Overcrowding is as dangerous as not being able to hear the driver, imho. Call your child's principal and ask them to get the overcrowding problem fixed.

.

our buses are all 3 to a seat- but it is grade school kids so they are small enough to fit and each seat has 3 seatbelts. Even class trips are 3 to a seat so the parents that go usually take a seat with 2 of the kids so they don't have to sit 3 parents in one little seat! I can't imagine shoving 3 high school kids in each seat though, they must sit on top of each other!
