My niece and nephew are turning 1 in three weeks  and I want to get them something they will absolutely love and use. What are some great toys and books for one year olds? What did your kids love at that age? Price does not matter.

My DS LOVED the Little People toys! He played with them for the longest time.

DS got lots of picture board books and clothing for his first birthday. He also has a LeapFrog drum that he really loves, as well as the Fisher Price Learning House (I think that's what it's called). Another thing we've bought him was the LeapFrog My First LeapPad which comes with one book/cartridge (One Bear in the Bedroom), but there are other titles available (Let's Go Baby, Pooh Loves You, Do You Know How Much I love You, etc).

Hope that helps.

When my oldest turned 1 we got him one of those pop up tents (the kid kind you can twist to store away). It was a HUGE hit!! He played with it daily, for hours.

I didn't get to use the twist-away feature for a long time.

We made it a tradition from then one, each of our children received one of them for their 1st birthday.

We JUST got rid of my ds's tent about 6 months ago due to holes in it.. he is 11 now :teeth:

It was nice over the years b/c it did twist up into a little circle, and had a bag you could put it in so we could take it where ever we wanted.

pop up tunnel and fisher price anything (my kids have all particularly loved the barn). if they don't have one, an easel with a chalkboard on one side/dry erase on the other is great. If price really is no object and they don't have one, a play kitchen is a lot of fun. If you are looking for something for the outside, a sandbox (not too small, and preferably with a cover) is ideal. another thought, a little table that they can sit at and color, etc, is really nice to have. We have a really cute one that my parents gave my twins when they turned one.

Any push toy. The toy lawn mowers were BIG hits at our house.

What about a sand/water table? When I worked at a daycare we used it outside during the spring/summer and then brought it indoors for the winter.
When it's really cold out they can put snow in it and play inside. :sunny:

We're getting one for DD's b-days this summer.

DD's favorite things at that age were empty boxes and pots and pans.

THere are so many neat toys and things for kids it is mind blowing.

You guys are great, thanks for all the help.

I think the "pop-up" tunnels and tents would be a great toy. Where can I find these at?

My mom is getting them a Disney ride on/push car that is Disney!! The boy is Mickey Mouse and the girl is princesses. It is so cute and makes a lot of noise.

I think I may have to do shopping online because our Toyr R Us closed down and the Babies R Us and Target and Walmart do not have much of a selection.

I was going to suggest a ride-on because both my kids loved them at that age. The pop-up tent is a good idea. My DS got one when he was 1 1/2 and he loved it.

My DD is almost 16 months and she loves books, balls (the Peek-a-Balls by Fisher Price are great) and anything with lots of buttons! She really loves toy phones, keychains, etc.. that make noise when she hits the buttons. :)

Ditto on the pop up tent and riding toys. My kids also like musical toys and walker toys (the kind they push, hold onto, and walk along) when they were that age.

I give all the little girls I know a nice tea set for the first birthday. They are a little young to us it then, but in time it will get used. It makes a great collectible for mom to save after they are done with it. My daughter is 7, and still uses the one my brother gave her for her first birthday.

For a little boy- nothing beats a TONKA. My son got a plastic tonka, with handles on the sides of the dumper. He was just learning to walk, and it make a great push toy. He is 4 now and still runs around pushing that truck. He has put many miles on it!

Piggy banks also make great first birthday gifts.

My friend had gotten my daughter a set of Dr.Suess books and she still reads it. :thumbsup2

My SIL gave my daughter "Baby" for her first birthday, just a chubby baby doll, doesn't do anything..but Baby was much loved(and it shows).
Julia will be 7 in October and Baby is still on her bed and still much loved. :thumbsup2

My DS, 16 mo, loves board books. His favorites have rhyming text, such as The Going to Bed Book by Sandra Boynton, How Do Dinosaurs Clean Their Rooms by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague, plus any kind of book with flaps to open or textures to feel. You also might consider a children's music CD (such as Raffi) for the child to dance/clap/sing along with. Have fun shopping!

Thanks again for all the great ideas. I picked up a few books last night that had the different textures and flaps that you can open up, Goodnight Moon, Brown Bear, and the 100 first words book. I think I will order the pop-up tent/tunnel since my parents already got them ride on toys and I already bought them push toys a few months ago. I also really like the piggy bank idea that they can put in their rooms and I will put some change and dollars into it. Thank you so much.
