Best games console vintage?

I’d say it depends upon what genre of games you like to play. If you’re into RPGs, there are some classics on the SNES (Chrono, Secret of Evermore, Zelda 3). If you’re into other genres, I’m no help, as I was almost exclusively RPGs. Good luck and hope you enjoy whatever you pick - it’s a fun hobby.

SNES was a huge expansion in game selection and console availability.

PS2/Gamecube/Xbox seemed to have popularized serious gaming, going from a silly activity for kids and nerds to the masses. It had the original Halo, Call of Duty, and Battlefield games.

PS3/Xbox 360 did the same for online gaming. It happened to coincide with the expansion of broadband internet, and they took advantage with games like Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4.

Based on my experience and console sales numbers, I think PS2/Gamecube/Xbox is the best. Massive games library, expansion of gaming, and significant hardware updates from N64 era.

It's so hard for me, but NES or SNES are the tops for sure!

NES was my first console, but my favorite was and still is SNES. I was right in that perfect age group when it came out, played it forever and still have it now. As I got older I became less interested in games and consoles so none of the others really stand out to me. But I still think today SNES has great gameplay. Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, The Lion King and Street Fighter 2 were my favorites.

Dreamcast, PS2, GameCube and Xbox. First generation of online gaming, all four of those had online components. PS2 brought an amazing array of games in many genres, really brought racing games to the forefront as well as some of the best RPGs. GameCube brought out some things that had never been done before, like Animal Crossing. And Halo changed the gaming landscape dramatically. Networked and later internet play for a FPS that played like a mid to high level gaming PC.

I feel like the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox was the peak gaming era. You had a mixture of gaming news both online and magazines. Gamefaqs for guides. The tv ads. I was a preteen during this era. I remember Toonami on Cartoon Network would rate video games. Lol

The Gamecube is special to me. I beg my dad to get it for me for Christmas. He kept messing with me by asking me if I wanted an Xbox. I got so angry with him. He got me the Gamecube. It was the first console that I felt that was mine. Before I shared the Sega Genesis and the N64 with my brother. He moved on to PC gaming so the console was all mine. I still it own and have all my games. Good thing too because the games are super expensive now!

Lizzie, you have no idea... people shovel out hundreds for certain games!

I'm extremely biased but PS2/OG Xbox/Gamecube. The first video game console I ever played was the Gamecube and it was like magic. So many classic games that hold up very well even today. And yes, those games are crazy expensive. One of my childhood games was Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg and that one goes for quite a bit due to being a GC exclusive that didn't sell well.

I still hate myself for selling my copy of Pokemon Colosseum. It goes for $100+, even WITHOUT the box or manual. With the box and manual, it can be up to $200. Thank God I still have Gale of Darkness.

I have Pokemon Colosseum. I never got Gale of Darkness, but friend had it. I remember watching her play it. She also had a PS2. I remember wanting a PS2 so bad just to play Kingdom Hearts and Sly Cooper.

I always wanted to try the TurboGrafx 16 and it's portable version, the TurboExpress, which could use the same game cartridges. The screenshots always looked cool. The TurboExpress was even on Enemy of the State, so you may have seen it.

Just checked Amazon, they have a new mini TG16, but for $300. Nevermind.

TG16 was a fun console. A buddy of mine had one, and there were a lot of fun games. Despite hte name, it's actually an 8-bit system, but it had a bit more punch than the NES.

What did people make of the aesthetics of the PS2, regardless of the system's other qualities? Personally, I loathed it. Looked like a black brick thing. Pity, since it had a LOT going for it - cheap DVD playback, a large library of native games, upscaled PSOne game library ready to pop...

It certainly wasn't the prettiest. It was practical if you kept it upright though.

I mean it is the best selling console of all time so people didn't hate the look that much lol
