Best freezer app for ipod/iphone?

Some of you have seen me on the summer meals threads. I've made my list on paper but I can tell you that it's going to get outdated soon.

Should I spend the $1.99 to buy a freezer tally app? Which one works well? I have both the freezer in my fridge plus a large chest freezer.

Or do you simply make a spreadsheet and hope can remember that the last time you saw a giant package of chicken marked down, you bought it then so you don't need to do so now?

Thanks,

I don't know if it's more than you are looking for - but I have a program called Living Cookbooks. It has a recipe builder, nutritional analysis, shopping lists, menu planner. It keeps track of your pantry/freezer etc. If it was set up properly - you could go into the program, click on the recipes you wanted to cook for the week, and the program would populate a shopping list, and deduct what was used in your pantry. The key words - if you set it up. I haven't - waiting for some free time - which I would have if I didn't spend so much time on the Disboards. LOL

If you want something free, you can use the Notes app preloaded on the iPhone. We haven't used it for a freezer tally, but my husband managed the supply and project lists for a recent remodel using this and loved it.

Another option might be a more generic list app, such as Speedlist for $2.99. I haven't used it but it was recommended on flyertalk to create packing lists with sublists. According to the website: "SpeedList helps you keep track of tasks, items and anything else that can be put in a list. Create lists for food shopping, chores, vacation packing and tasks for work. Organize by creating sub-lists."

I hate paying anything for an app, but if I paid $3, I would probably want it to do more than one task. Of course, it won't automatically tell you that you have the food for a recipe you are considering like it sounds like the Living Cookbook will, but it is on your iPhone and with you at the store, not on your computer at home. Best of luck -- Suzanne

Thanks everyone for the advice. Living Cookbook (http://www.livingcookbook.com/) works on a PC and I primarily use a Mac. Plus it's $34.95 from the website and my budget just isn't ready for that.

I think I'll just try the paper method for a while.

The Living Cookbook is not for everyone. I have probably saved 10 times the cost by meal planning through the program. Once I get that pantry section down - the shopping lists will be great. For example tonight I was canning some salsa (the first time I have tried), I thought I had some green peppers in the fridge - but I used them all when I made stuffed peppers last week. So I had to run to the local store to get some. Waste of time and gas.

Thank you! I missed the pc part, but it looks awesome. I appreciate it.
