Best free experiences?

Will we be able to get these cards if we don't intend to play the game with them? Do the CMs care? I don't think we'll have time to play since this is our first visit to WDW, but my boys LOVE collectible cards.

They didn't seem to care. We were on our way out of the park, and I sent my 3 and 5 yr old in with my husband while I changed the baby. I just saw the firehouse and remembered reading about it, so was curious. DH had no idea what he was looking for and they came back with 2 packs of cards.

If you have a little princess at the GF they were doing a princess promenade where the kiddos can walk down into the lobby with cinderella. Also watching the fireworks from outside Gasparilla Grill at the GF was lovely!

As PP mentioned, they do not care. Many people intend to play, but don't get a chance. You definitely do not want to take time out on first visit, as it is a fun game, but not a short process. You can all sign up, and each will get cards, giving you more chances for different cards. Let your boys know you will do it next trip.

They used to have a Magic cookie hour at Roaring Forks at the Wilderness Lodge every Saturday at two pm. You get a plain sugar cookie and some toppings and frosting to decorate them. You don't have to be a guest to enjoy it.

Some of the resorts have free arts and crafts. Art of Animation resort has a drawing class.

So I know about the movies at Fort Wilderness, watching the boat parade and Wishes from Fort Wilderness (I'm assuming they still do this), what other free activities/experiences/neat things are there to do around WDW? Our trip this summer will be on an extreme budget, so there isn't going to be money for dinners, things like BBB or PL etc... Just wondering what neat little things there are to do.
Animal Kingdom Lodge has a free tour of Boma and Jiko
Restaurants at 3:45 daily. Meet at the Jambo House Boma restaurant hostess stand. You will get some free soup and a Zebra dome cake at Boma and a free sample of the bread service at Jiko as well as an interesting half hour tour. After that head out to the savannah viewing area to see the animals. There is a cast member there to answer your questions. At night you get to use night vision goggles for free.

Can children come to that tour?

The entertainment on the boardwalk in the evenings is a lot of fun as well. Most of them are very talented, and I think they run most nights from around 7pm until 9:30 pm but I'm sure someone who knows the exact time will jump in.

Where is the Boardwalk? How do you get there (staying offsite)

Oh, and also- pick up the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom cards at MK. The cards are cool (think Pokemon cards with Disney characters), even if you don't play. We didn't open them until we got home, and of we had known how cute they were we'd have gotten more.

I would love to try this. Can you tell me more about the game and how it works? Did I read once it's more fun at night?

Glad to hear you are going this summer, I remember your dates were up in the air

Definitely AKL. The Electrical Water Pageant. We had a great time walking around AoA one afternoon, got some great pictures of the kids.

Well it's still fingers crossed. We're planning on it, but it still depends on DDs health, if there's surgery etc... We're buying the tickets and booking the house, but in all reality it'll be a fairly last minute decision. The home owner has been great and has agreed to transfer our deposit to a 2018 date if we have to cancel.

If you are at EPCOT you can take the "back" gate between UK and France. It is called the International Gateway on the park maps. Just walk around to the left and you are on the boardwalk. The Yatch and Beach club hotels will be across the lake, nice area to explore.

I actually plan on doing this when we're there in a few weeks for the first time. From what I've been able to find online, all ages welcome but kids tend to be bored. Hopefully this hasn't changed.

The Boardwalk is one of the WDW hotels. If you are staying offsite you would drive there. Ideally use a GPS, but as you approach WDW, road signs direct you where to go.

The Boardwalk is located between Epcot and Hollywood studios. If you are going to that area for the evening, you can walk really the entire loop/area from Hollywood Studios to The Swan/Dolphin hotels to the Beach club/Yacht Club hotels to the back entrance of Epcot. There's a lake in the middle, and if you don't want to walk, there's a free shuttle boat that loops the entire area. If it is hot, you might want to take the boat.

Within WDW, you can generally get around for free via monorail, bus, and boats. Though getting around can be quite time consuming, and they don't offer direct transportation between most resorts.

If you choose to park at any theme park or the Swan/Dolphin, you will have to pay for parking. You might be allowed to park at the resorts, you might be given a time limit, you might be turned away.

I mentioned Universal earlier, and they also have many non-theme park areas to explore. Though you'd have to pay for parking. They also have free shuttle boats to all the hotels. Like the Disney hotels, each hotel has fun stuff to explore, including free afternoon activities at the resorts. Like Hard Rock has a giant video screen and they have afternoon activities for kids. I recall live music out by the pool. One afternoon at Portofino we found Scooby Doo.

I should also ad, while there is no admission fee to visit Citywalk or Disney Springs, it hard to escape either without buying anything. Disney and US are top notch at marketing to kids, and they also know their customers are looking for small items to bring home. The mark up on small items like pencils and candy can be crazy. I recall a $12 Minnie Mouse toothbrush! One potential way to resist is to visit a place like the dollar bin at Target before you travel. Another pre-travel item we've tried is pixie dust! Any kind of glitter hairspray of body spray- just don't spray it indoors! or it make s huge mess! but off WDW, it is only like $2 per can, which is nothing compared to BBB! At party stores, you can find all kinds of themed stuff, like stickers and temp tattoos. Within WDW, you might still find free stickers. (the DVC booths)

Even beyond the US and WDW hotels, there are a number of other very pretty (high end) hotels in the Orlando area. Some charge for parking. One the hotels near the convention center had real ducks parade through the lobby every day! Most of the higher-end resorts have really beautiful landscaping and fresh flowers. You might also find some relatively inexpensive fun snacks- especially if you share.

In Epcot, try visiting the free kidcot stations (in each country) and Innoventions sometimes has free stuff. (When last we visited, they were redoing much of it.)

Thanks for starting this great thread! It was chosen to be featured on the DIS Daily Fix from a great location at Walt Disney World! :goodvibes

You can only pick up one pack of cards per person if you don't intend to play. You can get one more pack per person each day you're there, but you have to play one "portal" before you go and pick up cards for the day (unless, of course, it's the very first time you're playing). So if you really plan to collect, you'll have to play at least a little bit.

We do play it at night but I find it's harder to play then. The sensors have a much harder time reading your cards in low light so I might have to try three or four times to finish one portal. At night, however, the Pirates game over in Adventureland is very good. The effects are better at night than daytime and the low light adds some mystery and ambiance.

Just wondering what neat little things there are to do.

Since you are staying offsite you can save a lot by eating breakfast at "home". You can pack a lunch and some snacks. Do a quick serve place for dinner, and have some treats when you get home at night.

Parking is expensive at the parks though.

We usually do Disney Springs and/or Boardwalk on the arrival and departure days.

If the house you are renting has a pool, swimming would be a great mid-week break on a hot day.

You might want to drive over to Daytona for a day at the beach.

I don't necessarily have any suggestions for "free" things to do but on our most recent trip we kept dining to a minimum and splurged on treats to save money. I actually found I liked having the freedom of not being tied to a reservation or having to wait in line to eat. We usually easily found a spot to sit and relax. We tried to be a little creative with what we brought in so we would look forward to it. It worked so well I would definitely do it again!
