We are making our list of fun things to do on our first trip to Hawaii and Aulani (family of four, mom, dad, boys 12 and 17). We will be at Aulani 9 nights and are thinking about doing something each day for 1/2 a day and enjoying the hotel the other 1/2 of the day! We have a list of fun things we are interested in possibly doing:
  • Catamaran Experience (wild Side Hawaii)
  • Snorkeling with sharks excursion
  • ATV Tour at Kualoa ranch to see Jurassic park
  • Pearl Harbor
  • Diamond Head hike
  • Swap meet
  • Driving around island, seeing North Shore
  • Hanauma Bay Snorkeling
  • A Luau - probably Fia Fia
  • Parasailing
I am interested in getting your feedback and experiences on what you enjoyed with your family from this list or other fun things you'd suggest-

And did you book through Disney, another company or do it on your own? We will have a rental car!

Thanks!! Amy

We were in Hawaii last month and did a few of the things you've got listed. We were there 2 weeks, one on Waikiki and one at Aulani. While on Waikiki we, took a cab to diamond head & hiked up. We got there when it opened, so there were low crowds and nice weather. We all liked this. Cabs are waiting at base to take you back when you're done.

While at Aulani we, went to Pearl Harbor through Pearl Harbor tours. Very prompt & informative. They pick up and return at Aulani valet. They mentioned not having the Arizona tickets ahead of time, so tour could run longer, but we got in, so I'm not sure what that was about. We also did the Fia Fia Luau...LOVED it. Did preferred seating and got a front row table. Easy walk along the beach. We also rented a car one day from the Alamo desk at Aulani and drove to the dole plantation and north shore. Reserved the car through Costco at right around $80 for the day. Adults liked the sightseeing, kids were bored.

Hope that helps

I look forward to some feed back we are considering all of these things except we have no kids coming and are going to do the horse ride instead of the atv at kualoa

Your strategy of tourist stuff in the am and enjoy the resort for the remainder of the day is exactly what we did. It worked out really well! I'm assuming you will have a car at your disposal. I recommend going to Waikiki at least once. Not far from Diamond Head. We parked at the post office, (paid parking) and walked the beach, had lunch, did some shopping and then returned to the resort. You can't leave Oahu without a stroll/swim on Waikiki beach. Just saying :)

We just did a bunch of those, all on our own. Check out my trip report. http://www.disboards.com/threads/trip-report-hale-koa-6-6-to-6-8-and-aulani-6-8-to-6-15.3521757/ We had our sons, 24 and 22, and our girls 15 and 13. Boys loved the movie tour at Kualoa--I have pics in my trip report of that. I think Pearl Harbor and Diamond Head are must do's, and I'd recommend the Chief's Luau at Sealife Park. We heard there is even better snorkeling at Shark's Cove on the north shore, but we couldn't find parking. Ended up at Hanauma Bay, which was great.

We just returned (we were in HI June 6 through June 19) and we did several of those things.

I would DEFINITELY recommend a tour with Wild Side Specialty Tours. We did the Deluxe Wildlife Charter that takes a maximum of 10 people (we had a group of 8 so we couldn't do the other). That was one of the top 2 experiences of the trip for me. Would definitely do it again with the same company. They were fantastic!

We had snorkeling with the sharks booked with North Shore Shark Adventures. Unfortunately it was cancelled 3 different days due to "weather", so I'm not sure I can recommend that company. We didn't have any problems with weather our entire trip, but I know ocean conditions on the other side of the island may have been different.

We did Pearl Harbor. We ONLY did the Arizona memorial, which we reserved tickets to 60 days out. Glad we did, because tickets that day were sold out by 8 a.m. We didn't do any other activities there (Bowfin, etc.) because my kids were already bored enough with the Arizona (they are 6, 9, and 11, and didn't really understand the significance).

The second top experience of my trip was a helicopter tour with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters over the active volcano and waterfalls on the Big Island. We took a two day trip to the big island, but I believe there are day tours that will take you to the Big Island to see the sites and then back that night. I couldn't go to HI, not knowing if I would ever return, and not see lava from a volcano that is currently erupting. Not sure if an off-island trip is something that you would consider, but it was amazing!

We also did a fishing excursion with boomboomsportfishing.com. We only stayed out for 1/2 of the time we paid for because a couple of us weren't feeling well. We still managed to hook a blue marlin that eventually broke the line as well as a yellowfin tuna that we reeled in! We were able to take some of the fish back to the room with us (2 bedroom) and cook it for dinner. They gave us enough fish for 3 meals.

Another activity they might enjoy is surfing. We used North Shore Surf Girls. I only got up to my knees, but my husband was able to stand up. They were very helpful (though your older kids might not need as much help as my younger ones!). Either way, I think its cool to be able to tell people we went surfing on the North Shore of HI.

We rented a car through Costco for the length of our stay and did everything on our own. Family of 4. Really no need to book tours. Oahu is easy to get around and as long as you plan your day around traffic, you should be good to go. Pearl Harbor is free, just reserve your tickets in advance through the national parks website.

We just got back from Aulani on Saturday. We went to Kualoa Ranch but could not do the ATV tour as the minimum age is 16 (we have a 14 and 17 year old). Wanted to point that out given you have a 12 year old! We did the Zip Line activity though and had a blast!

Diamond Head was a good hike with incredible views. We got there when the park opened and just missed the sunrise (although we knew that would happen from researching sunrise times ahead of time - park opens at 6 and sunrise was 5:50 am!). We left Diamond Head and headed to Leonard's for malasadas. Then we headed to Pearl Harbor to complete the day. It worked out nicely. After Pear Harbor, we went to Nico's Pier 38 for an excellent lunch and finally to check in at Aulani.

We also did surf lessons through www.SurfHNL.com and it was fantastic!

We also rented a car through Costco and agree with others that Oahu is easy to get around! A bit of congestion on the roads at times but nothing worse than I have seen on the east coast.

Have a great trip!

I saw that they offer a family atv ride for up to 5 people and minimum age is 7 so we will do that.

Also, how long did you spend at diamond head? We want to do that and Pearl Harbor in the same day.

We've been a few times with both friends and this last time we brought my MIL and FIL. I can only speak to a few of the items you have listed.

Catamaran Experience: We've done this twice. It is a nice cruise out and snorkeling on the way back. This last time we saw dolphins and the first time we saw turtles.

The swap meet is fun. I'd highly recommend going as early in the day as possible. Even in January, it will start to get warm by late morning as it is set up in parking lot surrounding the stadium. Also, bring cash as not every vendor will take plastic.

On our drives up to the north shore, we always try first stop at the Bodo-In Temple on the way to North Shore and the Dole Plantation on the way back. It makes for a very full day, but you get a great variety.
