Best e-reader for $299 or under?

Amazon has kindle apps for both iphone and pc, and I'm almost positive they're free, so maybe you could download the kindle app to a pc to see how you like it? I know one huge complaint from SBTB (smart*itchestrashybooks.com) when they checked out the Nook is that the Nook's wireless ONLY works inside a B&N store wheras the kindle2 has global 3G access; I bought and downloaded a book to my kindle while my DH was driving us home from my Mom's lol. While I haven't actually tried to put a PDF on my kindle, yet, the instructions for doing so don't look difficult, and I haven't heard of anyone having problems with it. I'm also an "old school" fan, and I prefer a physical keyboard over touchscreen, but that's just my preference.

Feature comparison here: http://ireaderreview.com/2009/10/20/kindle-nook-comparison/

It appears that kindle added PDF support on 11/24/09 - since I didn't get mine until a month after that I guess that's why I haven't heard of PDF issues. ;-)

I also wanted to add that amazon offers a 30 day risk free trial of the kindle; you could try it, and, if you don't like it, send it back in time to get the Nook when more ship. There isn't even a restocking fee on the kindle.

B&N also has an app for the iphone... I am not sure about pc/mac but I do know it has it for the iphone because I have had it for a while. Nooks wireless, as far as I know, works from outside the stores. Otherwise how would people shop/browse for books. People on nookboards have been downloading books to their nooks from home.

I got 9 full-length recently published books (8 novels, one cookbook, none romances, or I could have gotten 3 times as many!) free from Amazon in Kindle format yesterday, without leaving my house. :)

No cookie, though!

One thing I'm really liking about the Kindle (which I've got as Kindle for PC, not yet being convinced that buying an expensive trinket is the right choice for me) is that I can get a sample chapter of anything I want. That, and the ability to use it as a free GPS. And to check email from anywhere. (I have a plain-vanilla cell phone, so really covet the internet-on-the-go, but am unwilling to pay for a data plan, so the free high-speed internet is a big selling point for me.)

I just want to point out that you can also get samples on nook.

I have done a lot of research on both, and like the OP have been tossing back and forth between nook and the kindle so I have been looking up a lot of things that people have been mentioning on here. As far as the slowness of nook, I have tested the store model 3 times now and have not had any problems. In fact, tonight I went into B&N and it was really fast. They just did a firmware update and so that helped with a lot of the problems that initial reviewers were mentioning.

If you want to know true opinions, don't look at technology reviewers, find people that have them (kindleboards and nookboards) and use their reviews. Go to B&N if you have one near you and check out the nook. And like another poster said, amazon does allow you to try it for up to 30 days and return it if you don't like it with no restocking fee. I guess in that sense you could technically try them both out before truly deciding.

Another positive for the nook - if your public library uses overdrive for lending ebooks, this is compatible with the nook. I don't believe the kindle has this option.

And I can also download samples and books from home as the PP mentioned on my nook.

I have had a kindle for almost 2 years, I LOVE it!
We travel a lot, and its so nice to always be able to get a new book.

The very best feature about kindle, which I don't think anyone has mentioned yet is you can have more than one kindle on your account. We have 5 (me, my mom, 2 sister in laws, and a friend), which means we share everything.

The ONLY things you don't share are blogs, magazines, and newspapers, but I honestly don't think any of us even have those.

I LOVE my kindle, I LOVE being able to download a few chapters to make sure I like it. I love the wifi, I have a kindle one, and I did have a few problems this summer with wifi, and getting books. (we also did a 8 week vacation, from coast to coast, and hit some really quiet places), but with that being said...my mom has the newer kindle, and she was on the same trip...and never had a wifi problem. With the second generation kindles, they have better access. But, i am not willing to upgrade because it really was not an issue (and I LOVE that mine has a memory card slot, where the newer kindles do not).

I know one of the big sells on the nook, is that you can "share" your books with others...well, if you look closesly into that...you can share, one book at a time, you can only share a book once, and only for 2 weeks, and while that book is being shared you can not access it.

We have almost 160 book on our kindle, and I would say almost 70 of them have been free. I check the free books on amazon almost daily. And, lots of them have been really good.

From the looking around I have done, the books are almost always cheaper on amazon too.

Good luck, I am sure you will love which ever you get!

Again, I am not pro nook or kindle as I don't have either, just stating what I have read... people can have multiple nooks on an account as well. Therefore sharing with the family is possible with nook as well.
