Best deal on new fridge?

Hi,

Our basement fridge (which is old and came with the house) does not have a viable freezer. We have a stand-alone freezer which we could not fit into our basement (by 2 inches...ARGH!) and we keep it in our garage. It's fine to store stuff long-term but I would like to be able to store more in the house (our kitchen freezer is packed to the gills.)

I think this is a good time of year to look for appliance deals, but I am not sure where to get the best price. Also we would need interest-free financing because I am not working now (see signature). Home Depot and Lowe's seem to have better prices than Sears (surprisingly) but are they the best places to go, or does anyone have other suggestions? I'm not picky on the brand but it would be great to be able to take advantage of the Energy Star rebates and we want a decent sized freezer. Thanks for any input!

I can't comment on the interest free financing but earlier this year we shopped Sears, Home Depot and Lowes, all are within a mile of each of other so was easy to jump between them. What we found was that Lowes was the highest priced and Home Dept was the lowest. However we wound up buying at Sears, we found that Sears always has some discontinued models with great markdowns. Certainly if looking for a bargin that's the way to go.

I bought a fridge on Black Friday at Home Depot and I have 18 months deferred interest. I just needed a new basic model and got a GE for 398.00. I am well pleased. I won't take 18 months to pay this off. I will wipe it out in 5 months.

I'm going to suggest looking at Lowes and Home Depot for their discounted (appliances) fridges. These are usually appliances that were delivered and then returned for numerous reasons. They deep discount them to get them off the floor. If you find one you like but want to pay less ask to speak to the manager. They usually won't refuse a reasonable offer.

Some times the reason they are returned is that the get slightly damaged upon delivery. Like if the straps they carry them with leave dents in the back. In this case the small dents aren't visible when the fridge is installed but the buyer wants a pristine fridge for the price they paid. The store contacts the manufacturer and tells them they want to discount the now damaged appliance. Sometimes as little as 10% but, occassionally it can be 50%, 60%, or 70%. Worth checking out.

If not, I like the Sears Outlet route.
