My son has horrible diaper rash as a result of 3 days of a bad stomach bug. He is really raw and the Balmex and Calumete powder that normally works is not helping. Any other suggestins?

My dd's were both really chuby and if you didn't dry their necks really really well, they would get chafed and it looked like raw meat! Really gross! I took one of them into the doctor to show her and get a suggestion and she said corn starch. Really, right out of the kitchen! Worked like a charm on that raw skin. I was shocked at how quickly it worked. I used it for every rash from then on and it worked every time. Good luck!

:thumbsup2 Boy is this timely. Try plain yoghurt, seriously. My niece said her baby had terrible diaper rash until she put the yoghurt on. It was cleared up in 2 days.

:thumbsup2

I thought someone was playing a joke on me when it was first recommended to me

He may have a yeast infection. Those are nasty and painful. :( I hope he feels better soon.

DEsitin never worked for my DD. She was VERY sensistive. Dr. told me to use a layer of Cortaid and then a layer of Balmex over that. Worked like charm every time.

Nothing has worked for us better than Triple Paste (although I did like Butt Paste too.)

He may have yeast though - if you google yeast diaper rash, you will probably be able to find a picture. That happened to Maddie (also after she had a bad stomach bug) and our ped. had us put athlete's foot cream on her butt under the Triple Paste.

DD2 occasionally gets a bad rash that is only cured with prescription cream. If it doesn't clear up soon with OTC creams, try calling the ped. :thumbsup2

I have always used A&D at the first sign of redness and (knock on wood) none of my girls have ever had diaper rash!

Vaseline and Corn Starch worked the best for us.

I always used to use that stuff for athlete's foot....Lotrimine? on the recommendation of my peditrician :thumbsup2 Worked great

Try to expose the skin to air as much as possible....The doctor's always told me the best cure for diaper rash was to let them go without the diaper for a little while. A&D is really good too. We coat our kids every diaper change in Desitin it has really limited the DRs to when they are sick, like your little one.

Second the poster who suggested yeast infection. Make sure it isn't that first. That can be painful. It happened to my daughter after a tummy bug.

Our peditrician suggested making your own homemade butt paste. Mix equal parts Maalox with corn starch. That works really well.

Also, Dr. Smith's is some good ointment to use.

But, have your doctor rule out a yeast infection.

Former advice nurse here....

First, soak baby in bath without soap several times a day to flush skin and keep it clean. DON"T USE DIAPER WIPES. Any kind of wipes will irritate skin if they are having diarrhea so immediatly stop using them and use warm water to flush the skin and if necessary use a mild soap. Expose bottom to air as much as possible. Let baby sleep without a diaper during naps and pad the bed with lots of towels or other washable linens keeping safety in mind. (tuck bedding so it is tight not bunched up and potential smothering hazzard)

Lots of times diaper rash will become a yeast infection as yeast lives on the skin and takes any opportunity to dive in there. That is why the yogurt probably helped. You can also get an over the counter antifungal cream in the jock itch area of your pharmacy. Brands like Lotrimin or Tinactin. Apply the cream well into the skin after cleaning 4 times a day. If that doesn't improve in 1-2 days or it gets worse at all take the baby to the doctor as they may also need a stronger prescription or antibiotic. Any signs of blistering or open skin or skin that peels needs immediate attention from a doctor. Don't hesitate to call your doctor's office even when they are closed for advice.

When babies get the first sign of diarrhea, use a good thick barrier cream like desitin or butt cream or even vaseline smeared on thick. Clean it off gently with warm water and mild soap and reapply after each stool. This can often avoid the rash that developes very quickly with diarrhea. Some antibiotics can create this diarrhea also so precautions can avoid problems.

If your baby is old enough to eat yogurt, giving it twice per day can also help the diarrhea. Remember to cut back on fruit juices and call your doctor's office for dietary advice for your baby based on age.

:thumbsup2 That's what I used with my DS...and I'll swear by it forever!
