I'm thinking of booking a GT rate cruise. From what I read there's a no cancellation policy with these. I'm thinking I would need trip insurance that allows me to cancel with for any or no reason and get a full refund. Does such a policy exist? If so, can someone point me in the direction of a good company for it? I tried reading some of the sites and they are confusing. Thanks!

You must be kidding yourself. Do you know what trip insurance is? it is a policy whereby a company will insure you against certain risks. If you could get cancellation insurance for just plain cancelling for any reason like just changing your mind, everybody would be having it and the premium would be the same as the price of your vacation. Dream on

Actually, there are policies that include a "cancel for any reason" provision. THey do not generally refund ALL your money under this clause. For instance, they may cover 100% of your loss if you cancel for a documented medical reason but only 75% if you cancel for a non-covered reason. The idea is not to cover because someone just changed their mind, but rather to cover for things that might not otherwise be listed in the policy.

Call the people at insuremytrip.com to see what they can offer.

Wow! Forgive me for asking what obviously seems like a ridiculous question to everyone else but me. Jeez. I obviously had no idea or I wouldn't have asked. I've never purchased trip insurance before starting to cruise. I didn't even purchase it on our first one.

Sorry for asking a question in search of a helpful response. I thought this was a nice board before this. Wow. Glad to know though that no such policy exists. That helps my decision.

Please, don't come in and post about what a stupid question I posted. I think once was enough to handle.

Thank you for such a nice response! 75% is better than nothing. I was thinking not necessarily about a medical issue but what if I suddenly lost my job or something crazy like that. At my previous job my company suddenly almost closed its doors because of bankruptcy. They didn't tell any of us employees what was going on. What if we had a massive earthquake? I live in CA. You just never know what can happen. This would be for the 2 week Hawaii cruise and that's a nice chunk of change. I was just trying to figure this out. I've never considered a GT rate before. Again, thank you for your helpful response!

That sort of scenario is generally exactly why CfAR policies exist. How much you get back is based in part on what the line's refund rules are based on a full fare. I know *GT rates are nonrefundable, but CfAR should be able to work around that.

Insuremytrip or Tripinsurancestore should both be able to help.

The other thing is that while purchasing insurance thru DCL is generally more expensive than thru other companies, it has a sort of built in "cancel for any reason" provision. That is, if you have a loss that is not covered by their insurance company, anything not paid will be applied toward a future DCL cruise. Again, better than nothing.

I'm no expert, but I think there are such policies, but I don't know any specifics like when you have to purchase them, how much do you get back, etc. We bought our trip insurance through tripinsurancestore.com and steve was extremely helpful. I think that my mom got a policy like that because she was unsure of what her health would be like come cruise time. Give them a call; it doesn't hurt to ask.:)

Frankly, I am glad you asked because I was about to research this some subject. I booked a vacation to Mexico two years ago and it included a cancel for any reason insurance policy. As the TA said I could cancel if I didn't like how my hair looked!

Your question was not stupid or ridiculous. These boards are for planning, saving, etc to get to an enjoyable vacation.

You asked a valid reasonable question in a nice way. You simply wanted to know something, nothing wrong with that. There are times that our reply may come across as a little less thoughtful than what we actually intended. I know I have been guilty of that on occasion.

Enjoy your day and happy planning!

Please don't let one person's answer upset you or keep you from asking questions here on the DIS Board. I have found that 99.99% of the people on here are helpful and friendly. There was nothing wrong with the question you asked. If you need an answer, we are here to help if we can.:thumbsup2

I, myself don't have an answer for you, because I don't no that much about the travel insurance. For all of my Disney cruises I have always used the travel insurance Disney offers.

Steve is very helpful. You can email him or call him and he responds very quickly. There was nothing wrong with your question.....and believe me, I have asked similar questions of Steve. He takes his time and explains everything, and in a nice way :), much like most everyone on this board.

Thank you all so much for your helpful responses! I'm was surprised to see such a response here on the boards. Everyone is usually so helpful here no matter what type of question is asked. :)

I will call the mentioned company to check it out. The vacation insurance through DCL looks a lot higher on the VGT booking versus what I have on my current booking (9C GTY). Is it normal for it to be higher on the GT rate bookings? It would be 'easier' to just pay for DCL's because I don't have to do anything but add it to my trip balance but it's quite pricey.

Interesting that DCL's insurance costs more on the VGT than on the cat 9 booking--when purchased privately, insurance is normally based on the cost of the trip. I'm guessing that the trip cost is less for the VGT???? so it makes little sense.

The other thing to consider is that DCL's coverage doesn't provide pre-existing condition coverage. YOU may have no issues, but what if you have to cancel because your father who has a heart condition is hospitalized? That may well be a pre-existing.

Sorry Ally, you shouldn't give such RUDE answers when you haven't done the research first-you shouldn't be so rude regardless.

Like others stated, this insurance does exist-but a reason would have to be supplied, and you would be out some money.

We had the option of purchasing "cancel for ANY reason" and then a more specific "cancel for work reason" additions to our insurance. We chose the work related since it was a bit cheaper and that would be the only not already covered reason.

I also want to think with these additions there is a time frame they have to be purchased within-I am unsure the specifics of this as we purchase our insurance out of the gate and book pretty far out.

ZZZZZZZZZ..yawn.;) Here's Steve's page that discusses the cancel for any reason policies:

http://www.tripinsurancestore.com/cfar.shtml

Policies are offered by CSA Freestyle Luxe, Global Alert Preferred & Preferred Plus, Travelex Travel Max, Travel Guard Gold, Travel Guard Platinum, Travel Insured and TravelSafe.

Note that they are more expensive and also have different purchase deadlines, so if you plan on booking one of the CFAR policies you need to decide quickly:

The CSA Freestyle Luxe deadline to purchase is no later than 24 hours after your initial trip payment

The Travel Guard Gold's & Platinum's deadline is no later than 14 days after the date you made your initial trip payment

The Global Alert Preferred & Preferred Plus plans' deadline is no later than 15 days after the date you made your initial trip payment

The Travel Insured WTP and TravelSafe Classic plans' deadlines are no later than 21 days after the date you made your initial trip payment

The Travelex Travel Max and Travel Insured Gold plans' deadlines are no later than 30 days after the date you made your initial trip payment

One reason CfAR may be higher on a VGT fare is because VGT is nonrefundable. Under normal circumstances, CfAR will only come into play after the PIF date and when transferring to a new cruise date is not a viable option. Because cruises are so often booked so far in advance, cruise lines make it easy and relatively painless to move to a different sailing, because they understand that life happens, but they want to keep you as a paying customer.

CfAR is really there for those rare instances in which you have nonrefundable money involved and circumstances dictate that you won't be able to reschedule in any sort of reasonable amount of time.

Makes sense. Thanks! :)

I purchased insurance (thru USAA) from Travel Insured. You can buy "cancel for any reason" as well as "cancel for work reasons". There is a small additional charge but it was worth it. I actually filed a claim for last November. My husband owns his own technology company and they sold a large account. He couldn't take off during our cruise because no one else could service the account while we were away.

They reimbursed us our cruise amount in full after we wrote a notarized letter explaining why we had to cancel. There was about $800 that the cruise line would not reimburse but we have a credit with the cruise line for $800 to be used in the future. So we actually came out $800 ahead. Doesn't seem right but that is our actual experience.

You get 100% back for work reasons and 75% back for "any" reason if you purchase the rider. When I purchase insurance, I only insure for medical and work reasons. Those would be the only reasons I would cancel but I do have the CFAR option if I want to purchase it. These riders have to be purchased within 14 days of initial depoist of your cruise to be eligible.

No question is a stupid question. The OP is genuinely concerned, so he/she put it out there for a response. If you don't ask, then you don't know. Obviously, the second (rude) poster didn't know what they were talking about, proven by the many additional helpful posts on the subject. Glad to know there's only a couple rotten apples in the 1,000's of DisBoards posters.
