Best 2 are Post Office & Halifax Clarity. Both give full interbank rate and no transaction fees on foreign purchases.
I use both but no idea on criteria to obtain them.

As Wayne said, Halifax Clarity and Post Office are the best for foreign spending. Surely it isn't your income that affects your eligibility but your credit rating. Who do you bank with?

Post Office have an eligibility criteria of £8k income.

Halifax Clarity, I think, have a lower income threshold - about £4k I think but could be wrong. Most credit card companies have an earning threshold - it's credit at the end of the day, they have to see that you can pay it back.

My money would be on the latter. We have just applied for one (weren't going to - I went round in circles about it all in the end!). It was very painless and cards came very quickly (we went for one where we have a second card holder who is linked to the first). This could be an option for you if you were looking to get one for a lower earner - it worked well for me as I am part time, self employed so was happy to have it all in DH's name. You could get in your name and they can become a second CC holder - all the debt belongs to the first card holder though - so just a warning ;-)

probably not the best answer but i just lied and put dhs income in the box:sad2: even though all other details were mine and it went through fine that was post office

What a tinker you are!

It's obviously a household income-just not your personal income-grey area?!

I wonder if dh could apply and add dd as a second card holder?
Is that possible-or only applicable for spouses?

Sorry if this is a nosey question but I am just wondering why your DD needs a credit card - is she not travelling with you? If she is, surely a better bet for her would be to have a pre-paid currency card, such as Fairfx. The only reason (in my opinion) that you NEED a credit card is in case of emergency, where you may have to fork out for high medical bills or other expenses that you may not be carrying enough cash/TCs or other currency to cover.

But, in answer to your question, then yes your DH could add your DD as an additional card holder.

Be nosy all you like?!

It's initially for if she hires a car in her name-us rent a car specifies driver needs a cc.
The other reason though, is if she does travel in the near future on her own-as an emergency back up.

You can have anyone as an addition card holder. With my Halifax Clarity I have DS as additional cardholder as he was supposed to be studying in the US for a year (didn't in the end) another card I had my Brother as another cardholder. The main cardholder is responsible.

Yep - as pps say. Anyone can be your additional cardholder. If you are happy with it, then that is probably the way to go tbh. You may find it easier to go into a Halifax branch to sort it out - it just means an appointment with a banking adviser. This is what we did as DH hates doing anything financial online - prefers to speak to a human (and the coffee was nice!)!!? We are Halifax savings customers but it didn't really make a difference - other than they didn't have to do such a thorough ID check I think? Anyone can apply.

You can hand over a debit card for car hire - but this was where we came unstuck. I really didn't want to hand over access to my bank account iyswim. A credit card keeps it much more neat and tidy and less risk of course too. We haven't quite decided how to play our spends yet, but toying with taking half cash and just using CC for the other half then paying off on return. With the rate as it currently is, I don't fancy changing a huge amount into $ cash (not to spend it) or taking TCs.

HTH

Don't know if this helps but both my teenagers have had a second card on my credit card account. We live abroad they are at home so they have access to funds for emergency.

It's not a bad idea to encourage her to apply for her own credit card - not necessarily for this trip or for travel, but to build up her credit rating by buying small amounts on it and laying it off in full each month. That way, when her income grows and she is eligible for a wider range of cards, she will have a solid credit background.

It's also worth seeing what the banks offer, if she's not committed to a particular bank. For example, Nationwide offer some customers a "Select" credit card which is based on depositing a regular income over a certain amount into a current account (or paying for their premium account, which can work in your favour if you want the benefits such as annual travel insurance, breakdown cover etc). This card is completely fee-free abroad and uses the Visa exchange rate which is one of the more competitive rates.

Just to add Kath - most CC use the Mastercard rate (Visa rate you mentioned). Certainly the 3 mentioned here do. Some people have been reporting a rate of 1.51+ on their $ CC spends in the last week or so. This is not to be sniffed at considering the hard cash 'currency' buy rate atm.
