Best car rental company for different pick up/drop off location?

Just starting the car rental search and would appreciate any help. I looked at the KLM/National code posted in another thread and saw that they will charge a $250 drop off fee if we rent the car at one location and drop off at another. Is this something that all rental agencies charge? Anyone know of the best company to rent from given our circumstances?

FYI, we are picking up the rental in Tampa and dropping off in Orlando and travelling at the tail end of spring break next year. TIA.

Not all car rental companies charge a drop off fee, especially in FL. Suggest you try different codes for National, as well as checking the other car rental companies.

You should probably check the car rental sticky at the top of this forum for info on where the various agency locations are.

It's not simply a matter of the "best company" for a one-way rental. It's also a batter of finding the right rate code and/or discount coupon.

With my current corporate rate, National never charges a drop-off charge when I rent at one Florida location and return at another. However, other rate codes may yield other results.

One-way rentals can result in a drop-off charge, or per-mile charges (on rates that would otherwise have unlimited mileage; or a cap on free miles (on rates that would otherwise have unlimited mileage; or invalid coupons (where the same coupon would other wise be valid).

When I used to be a Hertz customer, I would use the AAA rate instead of my corporate rate when I had a one-way rental. For me at that time, the AAA base rate was higher, but included unlimited miles, even for one-way rentals.

Many of the codes we use aren't applicable to one way rentals. Using the code sometimes results in a rack rate, retail price, quote.

Get a quote without any codes. Also try sites like travelocity They sometimes have deals on one way rentals. Try COSTCO, if you're a member.
