Hi, I need to set up a nacho/taco salad bar for about 100. Can anyone reccomend a good canned chili? Also what is the best "melting" cheese for the crock pot (velveeta, cheese wiz, tostitos cheese dip ?)

Velveta is probably your best bet for the cheese, it's made just for melting.

As for the Chili - I believe there is some sort of chili brand named "Marathon" or something to that effect. It is pretty good. Good luck! :thumbsup2

I second the Velveeta-and-Rotel combo...it's fantastic!

I don't know if you have it where you are locally, but Steak 'n' Shake's canned chili is pretty good, too. I've always been a little leery of canned chili, thinking there's no way it could possibly be as good as "real" chili, but S 'n' S's is pretty close. Chili Man chili is darn tasty as well, and I think that might be a national brand.

I don't know if it is only available in Texas or not, but Wolf Brand chili is really, really good.

I agree with these two chili brands.

Do you have Trader Joes nearby? Their jarred store brand is awesome.

My hubby and BIL love Stagg Chili Country Style, they also like Bush's Chili in the glass jar!!!

I also vote for velveeta and rotel!!!!!

I usually buy Castleberry's canned chili. It's not one of the more expensive chilis, but it has a great taste that goes well on nachos!

For the cheese .. you could make a dip. A friend of mine uses the crockpot with a large bar of Velvetta and for each full bar she uses 2.5 cans of Rotella (Rotel??), draining some of the juice. Let it melt together and it's awesome!!

As far as chili, I have no idea. I do like the beans in chili sauce when making nachos but I don't know about actual chili. ETA: I do like the Hormel Chili in the glass jar as well ... I forgot about that one.

My favorite chili is Bush's in the glass jars.

I help put together a "Chili Day" for my local Kiwanis every November. We use frozen chili and serve 80-100 gallons between lunch and dinner. I highly reccomend this as it is consistently good and easy. We normally use "B.B. Rice Chili" (brand name) but couldn't get it this past year so we used "Texas Long Bar". We also add two cans of beans with one them smashed up, chili powder to taste.

My .02

Good luck.

Forgot to mention that 80 gallons will serve about 600 people, don't know how far a gallon would go when combined with nachos.

For that many people I would buy the canned Nacho Cheese (I like the Ortega) and for chili I like to get the Stagg brand. Both of these I purchase at Costco. Unless budget is no issue, the Velveeta seems pretty spendy to me.

The large cans of chili/cheese will usually fit in a crock pot.

I so agree!! Unfortunately, with me being the misplaced Texan that I am, the only time we get to eat it is when we go back home to visit:sad1:

wow, thanks for all of the input. I know that my local store carries Rotel and Stagg, I will look for the rest of these. Thanks !

just popped in to say you are sexy
