I'm going to be spending a day at Universal with my 7 yr old son, and I'm torn between the original park and Islands of Adventure. My recollection of the original park is that it had a lot of movie-themed rides from 'older' movies (Twister, King Kong, etc) that a 7 yr old might not have even heard of. Am I right in this? Would IOA be a better fit?

US has Jimmy Neutron ride (Nickelodeon area), Shrek, Men in Black ride, Woody the Wookpecker area, Twister, etc.

While IOA has a Dr. Seuss area, Spider Man ride, a Popeye boat ride, other then that everything else might be to extreme for your son. Unless he is a daredevil there are coasters, and big drop rides. I would say US for a 7 year old would be better in my opinion, but really depends on how much he likes the 'big' rides.

Both parks have some good palces for kids that age to have fun
Studios has Fievels playland , Curious George play area that has alot of water for them to play in and as mentioned Woody woodpecker rollercoaster, ET as others I can't remeber.
IOA has camp Jurrassic , Discovery Zone and not to mention WWOHP coming soon.
Just a suggestion but I would go to universalorlando.com and look at the info on the parks and do like I did show it to your kid and see what park he would like cause thats what I did for the first time with my two sons but they said they wanted to go to both :lmao:

At 7 your son may not make the height requirements for some of the rides at IOA (my niece didn't make them at 9, but she's petite). I would say that he would be able to do/see everything on the US side other than maybe Rip Ride Rockit.
