Just looking at the beer thread below..any suggestions for best beers at WDW - including the parks and hotels. We're staying at AKL. The sampler at Rose & Crown sounds interesting. My husband likes microbrews - on tap (not bottled). Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I would definitely make it a point to stroll over to the Boardwalk (just a short walk from the International gateway entrance in EPCOT) and stop in at Big River Brewery, they have their own beers there (tap), they offer a sampler (for purchase, of course) of several different beers so you can decide which one you might want more or. I think they will give you a taste of any beer before you buy too, but I'm not 100%.

For fun, you could drink beer around EPCOT, I think there are different beers at almost every country, but some of them may be bottled. Germany has good beer, IMO.

I'm not real adventurous with beer, I drink plenty of it, but it's just your standard (domestic)stuff, so I'm not much help.

1) A large Ringnes in Norway
2) Kirin Ichiban in Japan
3) Dos Equis in Mexico

AKL has some decent beers, Germany as mentioned is a pretty good one too...(the standard German beers available, same for England). We tried the micro brew on the Boardwalk 2 trips ago and were not too impressed. To tell you the truth...the first thing we do when we get home is have a cheesesteak and a lager....well, I guess we're not there for the food and beer!! If you find anything let me know!

rignes in norway -- not to be missed!

Ok, if your husband likes microbrews on tap, I am going to write this as if it is to a beer geek / snob, so I hope nobody gets offended.

There is a lot of beer in world showcase at Epcot, but most is fairly mediocre, imho, the sort of imports that you would see most anywhere. Like in Germany they have Beck's, which is a shame if you think of all the German beer out there. In Norway they have Ringnes, which is an OK lager, but they don't have any of the superior Aass from Norway. That sort of thing. The best bet in Epcot, without a doubt, is Rose and Crown, guiness, bass, harp, tenents, and bodington's on tap.

The microbrew choices are fairly limited. Big River is OK, but it isn't the best big river location, and all big rivers are sort of mainstream touristy anyway, imho. The beers there tend to be fairly lowest common denominator. Expect a pilsner, a basic lager, a light. They usually have a fairly hoppy amber that may be your best bet. In the spring they may have a wheat which is pretty good, and some darker beers in the winter. If you've been to a big river or rock bottom you know what to expect, but this one doesn't have as much variety as the other locations.

One of the wider beer selections at walt disney world is at the crew's cup at the yacht club. They have several choices, but it is all bottled, the stuff on tap is pretty basic, sorry. You can, though, make a pretty nice loop out of rose and crown, crew's cup, and big river. Another nice stop is Matsu Noma lounge at Japan in Epcot, they have the Kirin products which are good imho (I like Kirin Ichiban). All bottled.

Beyond that, in world showcase, let's see. Canada has moosehead and some of the lower level canadian beers (I can't remember if molson or labatts or both). Morroco has casablanca, which is a pretty drinkable lager with a sort of faint white taste. France has LaBelle's, very drinkable, light, faintly sweet. Germany has the Beck's. Italy has Peroni, if you haven't had that it is an easy to drink straight forward beer. The outpost is always a mystery - sometimes they just have the casablanca, sometimes they might have something else. Once recently they had red hook, go figure. Once they had Kingfisher from India. China has the basic Chinese beers, and Mexico has the basic mexican beers (XX, not negro modelo or anything like that). It can be a lot of fun sampling your way around, though, so make the best of it. Let me see, all botteled except rose and crown, and the bakery in Norway for ringnes - don't quote me on that, but I think this is true. Germany may have beck's on tap. Tell your husband that, sadly, there is no Belgium pavillion.

Beyond that it is pretty basic. One microbrew on tap that I can think of is Red Hook (usually ESB, but I think there is some seasonal aspect to it) at the Territory Lounge at Wilderness lodge. The territory lounge is one of the better resort bars, imho. You are staying at the AKL, which I'm happy to tell you has a better than average selection at victoria fall's, their main lobby bar looking over Boma. They have a pretty good selection of imports, but than most of the resort bars by far. A lot of the resort bars only have american macrobrews, plus maybe corona and hienekens, you can occasionally find one or two others, (dixie landings has guiness stout, trout pass has guiness drought, etc.) but those are the usual suspects at most disney bars. Victoria falls is pretty good. The pool bar at animal kingdom lodge has the basic americans and safari amber, which is a special label from anheiser busch that isn't that bad. Sometimes the little stores in the resorts have a beer or two in the cooler beyond buds and coronas, usually for a good price (ex. bass) so it is worth to check it out. Also, Goodings (which is too high for regular grocery shopping) at the crossroads by downtown disney has a pretty decent beer selection if you want to stock the room.

You have to remember that it is a touristy place and they are in it to supply the most people as possible, so there isn't a lot of craft to it - wdw does a better job with frozen rum drinks than beer, imho, but there is enough variety to keep most anyone happy if you look around. Pleasure Island is pretty disapointing for beer, but there are some good drinks (this is especially true of adventurers club. Why hey can't have a single decent beer there is beyond me). But, like I said, there is enough around to make most anyone happy -

you know what, the canadian beers are on tap, too, in the stand in Canada, and the safari amber is on tap at the AKL pool bar.

We had Beck's on tap in Germany in January...I think is was $10.00 for a pint..cheaper to stick to the bottles, but I do like draught better!

Ditto on Germany-they have Becks.....I don't know why though! No one in Germany drinks Becks!LOL

I guess D-R said it all, and with a little class I might add. When we're in Epcot, I usually stop in at the Rose and Crown and have a pint or two of the Guinness. Why drink anything else when Guinness is available on draft? :)

The only thing I can add is that we are beer snobs and very much liked the Safari Amber at AKL and thought that the Big River Grill's best brew is was the Irish Red. Other than that, you can't go wrong with Rose and Crown!

I totally agree! I love Tenents. I think the Rose & Crown is the best place to enjoy beer due to the pub atmosphere. It's also fun to meet folks who are not from the USA. We always stop here for a pint to relax.

EXACTLY!

(but i have to figure out how to do that quote thingy better.

Ah--another beer thread. And me JUST going out over the weekend to Kclingers in Hanover Pa.--with 40 draft selections and 612 bottle selections!!
Actually D-R covered the ground nicely. For handcrafted Micros you are limited to Big River grille--where my favorite is Wowzer's Wheat. I believe the only place at AKL whwere you can get safari Amber (suspiciously enough, a LOT like Mich Amber Bock) is at the Pool bar--they don't serve it at Jiko or Victoria Falls. But they do still have it at a few spots in the Ak Theme Park, where I got one in May.
Bongo's has Hatuey. And I think a few other South American offerings (tho Hatuey is now brewed in the USA by Bicardi.
Oh-the territory lounge has Mich Honey Lager on draft..

I prefer mild beers like Tennents whereas DH loves a Black & Tan so we like to stop at the Rose and Crown. My preferred beer is Ringnes however but the Safari Amber is on my short list.

Though not a draught beer, I had a great Kenyan bottled beer at Boma's in AKL.....

The best time to go (if a beer lover) is during Epcot's Food and Wine Festival.......great selections at reasonable prices......

Thanks so much for the replies! My DH is a *beer snob* and so am I for that matter (I just don't drink beer as often). My idea of the perfect beer place is Belgium. After you go there and drink beer nothing else quite satisfies:jester: I think my husband will have fun trying your suggestions!

Belguim!! Had a Stella justt he other evening!! And there's Chimay, and--well, long list!!

AK park and lodge serve the safari amber..it is not bad considering it is brewed by bud.

Like DR said...the beers are mediocre at best for someone who really enjoys an excellent beer with meals.

I thought of two that I forgot. The Brown Derby in MGM studios has La Fin Du Mon (not sure about the spelling, the Belgiun style beer from the Canadian brewery Unabrau) and McEwan's Scotch Ale. The Coral Reef in Epcot has a self-labeled microbrewed lager that is pretty crisp tasting and actually, come to think of it, is pretty refreshing and drinkable. I'm sure that someone brews it for them and they re-label it, but I don't know the details. Oh, Wolfgang Puck's in downtown disney has blue moon, if you like it.

You know, I'm kind of sad that I know this stuff. Sometime ask me about beer at disneyland ;)
