Hey all,
Nathan is currently five months old and 15 pounds. He will be just about six months when we go. Any suggestions on a carrier for him. I ahve heard good things about the hip hammock and the baby bjorn. What have you all used and what made it so great.

Hi, I'm curious, are you bringing your infant car seat with you? I'm trying to decide whether or not to bring ours. DD was 4 months when we went and the only time we really used the seat was on the shuttle from the airport to the hotel. The rest of the time we pushed her around in a stroller.

I tried the bjorn with DD but she hated it! Maybe baby #2 will like it.

We are bringing our infnat car seat because we are driving.

Off topic question: He is 26 inches long and almost too big for it but he is still too small for the next step right? What are the rules? We bought the alpha omega elite as the next car seat

Loved our baby bjorn at WDW! We used it for many rides and lines last fall with our DD (10M & 15lbs.) It was super easy to have her just hangin, watchiing everything that was happening. When not in used, we stuck it in the bottom of our stroller.

Most convertible seats are for infant +. I would read the safety info on the seat for the best info.

Also- many people don't realize that infant seats go by BOTH weight and length, so make sure yours is good up to 27inches (my is 20lbs., 26 inches...or what ever comes 1st).

A stroller is best. Don't think about doing WDW without one.

I also had a baby sling from Mayawrap (http://www.mayawrap.com/), Not only did it hold the baby while in line, but I could also use it for a stroller cover for the sun and a play blanket for the ground. I used it for the first 18 months of our DD's life.

ETA: I would also nurse my DD is her sling and use the "tail" to cover her. It worked great!

We went when my dd was 6 months and about 18 pounds. I wore her in the baby bjorn most of the time and alternated with the maya wrap just to give my body a break. She wouldn't sit in a stroller until she was over a year, so I had to wear her.

I took a Mei Tai carrier, essentially a square piece of fabric with 4 straps attatched. It was great I could carry my 8 mo in front facing out so she could see or in so she could nurse. With a nursing top on, you couldn't tell I was nursing. It looked like she was sleeping. I could also carry her piggy back style on my back. It came in very handy.

We went on a Disney Wonder cruise and opted to carry the 18 month old in our Baby Bjorn through the airport to the ship, where we rented one for the week (no charge, thank goodness!). However, he was 23 lbs and too heavy for the time we had him in it. We always rent the double stroller at Disney. They roll better than my double, and three kids can fit if needed. It's also hard to pack up a big double stroller in those parking lot trams. I used to have a backpack that turned into a two-wheeled stroller. It was a bit awkward, but INSTEP now makes one that has 4 wheels and it's more stable. That's what I'd get if I had one child young enough for a stroller.

If you like the Bjorn, you'll love the Ergo. The baby bjorn carriers are only comfortable for short times and babies 10 lb. or less, plus they put quite a bit of stress on an infant's spine due to the way the baby hangs in the carrier. The ergo supports the baby on the back of his legs and entire seat. It's very comfortable for front, back and hip carries and can hold a child up to 65 lb. (no kidding)

I'm bringing my Ergo, two ring slings, a wrap, and a sports mesh sling pouch for the pools and water parks.

You should check out the Babywearer website for more information on finding the right carrier for you and your chidren!

I love my Bjorn, but now I'm a mayawrap lady! I'll be taking my maya ring sling with me for my DS who will be 15 months when we go to Disney. I plan to use the sling for waiting in lines and any time he wants to be carried. I used a Bjorn a lot when he was smaller, but the sling works much better now.

As for your carseat, if your DS is already 26" it is time for a rear-facing convertible seat. My DS outgrew his infant seat by height and weight by 6 months. We have a Britax Marathon for my car and an Evenflo Triumph V for Dh's car. They are both highly rated and easy to use seats. Remember to keep your child Rear-facing until at least one year of age. Hope that helps!

I don't know of any convertible car seat (rear/forward facing) that is NOT ok for even a newborn! Granted the tiny ones look funny in it because it's so huge and they are so tiny, but it is made for them too.

We started using the rear facing convertible car seat for DS when he was 26" (max length for the bucket car seat) and he was getting too heavy to carry in it anyway. Just don't turn it forward facing until your baby is BOTH one year old AND 20 lbs.

When we traveled with DS when he was still in the bucket car seat, yes, we took the car seat and the stroller. It was just easier to maneuver him in! And in the bucket on the stroller we could see him better than him sitting forward in the stroller.

My son is now 16.5 lbs. and is 26.5 inches long and is only 4.5 mths old and I can only imagine what he will be like when we go in May. I have a carrier to use when we are in lines and was wondering if I should bring it--I guess I should.

matilda_z--where can I find the mesh pouch to use at the water parks?

We took our kids in Sept. with youngest DD3 monthes. We used the Baby Bjorn the majority of the time. She preferred it to ther stroller. If she was asleep, we would just take her on rides, in shows, etc. Had she been asleep in her stroller, one of us would have had to sit out or wake her up. We LOVED the Baby Bjorn!!! Good luck on your trip!!

DD#2 was 7 months old when we took her on her first WDW trip, and I used the Hip Hammock - LOVED IT!!!! As the name indicates, it essentially holds the baby so that they are "sitting" on your hip. I found it to be very comfortable (I felt that it put less strain on my back than a typical front carrier), and DD liked it because she could look all around - she was not facing either driectly toward me or directly away from me like some front carriers. She could see me, but could still see everything else, too. I also found it pretty easy to get her in & out of.

Took our rather large (20 pounds and 26") DD to Disney when she was 5 months old. We brough our stroller, the backpack, hip hammock and the Baby Bjorn (although we used the Fantino brand).

I have to say the only two things we used were the stroller (because we brought our own she was able to fully recline and get a good nap) and the Baby Bjorn. What was great about the Bjorn is that I would put her in it before going on a ride and then just get on. She would sit on my lap like a nice little package. It was great and very convenient.

Piglet74:

Check out hotslings(dot)com for mesh pouches. You can also get a mesh ring sling that will adjust to fit both you and your partner from sleepingbaby(dot)net. If you sew yourself, you can find many great suggestions at the slingsewing yahoo group and the do-it-yourself forum at thebabywearer(dot)com.

Hope that helps!

Ive always used a stroller and my son was old enough to stand in line. You will need to park your stroller before entering a line. Nowadays, and I wished I had found this earlier, I use a Hotsling. I absolutely love it. I used a Bjorn with my son and it hurt my back. The hotsling doesnt bother me at all, and my daughter loves it. I get so many compliments on it too. No need to mess with adjustments-just slip it on and pop in baby. You can use a cradle hold, kangaroo hold, hip hold, and even your back. Shes got great fabrics (even a solarveil which is great for being in the sun and water-light and airy, offeres sun protection and dries fast). I have 3 of them and use them all the time. You can find them at hotslings.com
