Best at home hair color?????

I have always used Nice 'n Easy. Covers grays nicely. Last 2 times I used Nice 'n Easy foam. I liked the really clean foam application, but the product is like putting a semi-transparent hair color on my hair. You could see where the natural hair color was growing back in.

Next time I will try the Garnier or John Frieda, since people here like these products.

I did hair for 15+ yrs and for home coloring Natural Instincts bar none is the best. I think it's by clairol. I leave it on a little longer than they advise. I always go up a shade as dark hair grabs and comes out too dark.

I use this too. I like that they have a color refresher to use 2 weeks after initial coloring. Smells a lot better than the L'Oreal Healthy Look and seems to last longer on me.:thumbsup2

One color up? lighter?

I also use the John Frieda foam and I'm sticking with it. I tried using Garnier and it didn't work for me.

Natural hair color is dark brown, so I guess I'm using a shade lighter than natural color. Natural Instinct I use cool medium brown tones down my natural reds and gives me a nice medium brown.

For L'Oreal I used dark chestnut brown - it was dark and brownish red. I actually like it darker than it is but Natural Instincts colors the grays a nice very light brown. It's a more natural looking color than the chestnut brown.

DD graduation is coming up along with senior banquets, etc. so I'll stay brown for now, but I do miss the chestnut brown...love that deep rich brownish red!::yes:: think I'm going back to that for trip to WDW in June!:yay:

go to Sallys (you dont need a hair license to shop there) and buy a tiny bottle of gray drops (10 droplettes for each 2 ounces of hairdye) it really works to grab color onto the gray. I use ion color gel from there with 20 volume peroxide (mix ounce for ounce- color and peroxide) so much cheaper and better for your hair than the box dyes, and they do have color swatches to go by for the color hth's

My sister told me to do just what you said! I guess I will now. :goodvibes

Another Garnier fan here...although dd is attending beauty school, ya think she would help me out a little.:lmao:

I recently tried the John Frieda foam to color a small amount of grey (1st time at-home ever) and I was pretty happy. A few pointers from my experience...

1. I have thick hair and it took FOREVER to get my hair saturated and it never really "foamed" up like the picture (there's a video to watch, too). By the time I had all my hair covered, my timer had long gone off. I was freaking out, but it was fine in the long run. In the future, I will have a 2nd box on hand!

2. I used "Light Golden Brown" (close to my natural color) and there was nothing light or golden about it. Luckily, I'm not too picky, but be forewarned that it comes out much darker. It's really a medium to darkish brown with a good bit of red.

FYI...I went on the John Frieda website before coloring, which was very helpful and informative, and they also had coupons that you could print off.

I have grey, too - started showing up in my 20's! I have been coloring my hair at home for several years now. Excellence Creme by Loreal is my absolute favorite - easy and very little mess. In between colors, I use Clairol's Root Touch-Up. There are often coupon for these and sales at Target, too.

I'm in the L'Oreal camp. I have auburn - reddish brown hair - their light reddish blonde ends up being very close to my natural color. Redheads have lots of trouble getting decent results, especially when we have lots of grey to cover. L'oreal has a Gold Rewards club - log in 5 codes and you get coupon for a free box - that in addition to frequent coupons, makes them an economic choice for me.
