After reading through all the threads about iPods, I finally bought one for my 5 and 7 year old sons What are the best educational apps for kids? I want to load them with a couple apps so they are ready to go Christmas morning. Thanks!

A few of my son's favorites are Stack the States, Monster Physics, and Presidents vs. Aliens.

:goodvibes even though DD8 & 10 have their own iPods with apps, Im looking for apps for younger ones as well DS6 & DD5 are getting their own iPods to replace their LeapPads =)

My sons absolutely love "Where's my water" and "Cut the rope". They aren't really educational, but do require them to think and problem solve, not just blow things up!

My kids love them too....I like that they are problem solving games and not just mindless entertainment.

Where's My Water and Hill Climb are two of my kids' favorites. :)

Oh, and for mindless fun? Can't beat the Fart App. That's another favorite here.:rotfl:

Stack the States and Plants vs Zombies are two of my girls favorites.

My DS (9) has really liked Subway Surfers and Angry Birds Star Wars lately. He also spends his free time in Minecraft lately.

Some of our favorites, (DD6&7):

Educational:
Mathmateer (formerly Rocket Math)
ABC Mouse (Zoo and Grand Canyon)
Khan Academy
Monkey Preschool Lunchbox and Monkey Mathschool Sunshine
Math Blaster
Schoolhouse Rocks videos (from iTunes, not app store)
Super Why

Puzzle/Thinking Skills:
Cut the Rope
Where's my Water (Where's my Perry?)
Flow Free
Draw Something (DD7 plays with me and some relatives)
Scramble with Friends and Words with Friends (DD7 plays with me)

Entertainment:
There's a Monster at the End of this Book (interactive book)
Watch Disney and Watch Disney Junior (must have a participating cable service provider)
Any of the Toca Boca apps
Video Star
Go Swim (DD7 does Swim Team)
Pandora
Radio Disney
Fruit Ninja
Temple Run

I also have two ebooks that DD7 reads. One Winnie the Pooh book was free, and an American Girl book. We also subscribe to the Disney Family Fun magazine and you can get digital edition free with the mailed subscription, so that's set up in the newstand app.

In addition to the apps, whenever I get a new movie, I watch for sales on the versions that come with digital copies, so we have a dozen movies in our iTunes library that I swap in and out. Plus, most of the disney junior shows have at least one free episode, so I've got some of those also (we have a younger DD that likes those shows now).

I mix educational and fun apps together on the iPad and my kiddos love them all. Sometimes I tell them they have to do math games and sometimes I let them have a free-for-all. Here are some of the apps my kiddos like:

Mad Libs
Cookie Doodle
Cut the Rope
Helicopter Taxi
Tetris
Toca Monsters
Math Bingo
Stack the States
Rocket Math
Stack the Countries
Nemo Comic
Dumbo
Finding Nemo
Bambi
Jungle Book
Game of Life
Presidents vs Aliens
Jungle Time
Fancy Nancy Dress Up
Slice It
Rush Hour
Chocolate Fix
Bananagrams
Scoops
Where's My Water?
Scribblenauts
Pirate School (Jake and the Neverland Pirates)
Creationary
Lego Harry Potter
