I have had homeowner and car insurance with USAA for 16+ years. On Friday I got my homeowner renewal and in the past 3 years my rates WITHOUT any claims have increased by $600 total. I called them and was told it was due to they way the contract for writing insurance in Indiana has been done. I have been getting quotes from other companies and found most are substantially less than USAA for the same or better coverage. I am talking $600 or more less than the $1500 USAA is.

I was not comfortable with Nationwide talking to them on the phone.

At this point I am asking for experiences or recommendations for insurance companies. Right now I am leaning towards All State but have no experiences with them (this would be for both auto and home as the rates were better on both). I have until October to make a decision but want to have a few companies to compare and make a sound decision.

Thanks for any advice or experiences on the good and bad of various companies. I have been happy with USAA but the financial cost is getting to be way more than others. We have had no claims for auto or home so that has not been an issue.

i have travelers for my auto insurance, and would recommend them.(through AAA) But recently switched to travelers for homeowners, and it has been nothing but a hassle since day one.

If you had USAA you might also qualify for Armed Forces Insurance. We also had/have USAA for many years. We still have auto, boat, and a misc policies with them, but changed our home owners to AFI and saved about $600 per year. Like you, our USAA home owners kept going up until I noticed how expensive it was getting. The switch over was easy. I have not had to make a claim (had them a year and a half now) so I can't comment on that aspect of AFI. USAA was very easy with the 2 claims we made. I took out my USAA policy when getting a quote from AFI and the coverage is the same. $600 bucks is a lot of money to save....

I have had State Farm since I was 17 for auto. Have had they're homeowners for 11 years; they have great service and prices! Plus my agent is great!

We have had State Farm for all types of insurance -- auto, homeowners, liability umbrella, business -- for almost 30 years. Never a problem. When drivers with other insurance have hit our vehicles, there were always problems with the other insurance -- no local adjusters, slow to respond, slow to pay, etc. Only when someone else with State Farm backed into me did the estimate and payout go quickly.

I'm searching for a new company as well. After doing some research I'm realizing that SF is charging me more than twice the price on our auto ins as other carriers do with the same coverage. Why?!

We,too, have been phasing out USAA for our insurance needs. They would not insure our new home in Florida. (hurricanes) I understand USAA takes on additional risk, but what happened to SERVICE for our military? I think their mission is being sacraficed for the bottom line which is VERY profitable!:rolleyes1

We have had Nationwide for over 20 years (Auto and Homeowners). No problems whatsoever! We are actually dealing with them right now due to our DS's car being vandalized. We should get our check tomorrow (car was totalled) and it has only taken almost 2 weeks. Compared to some I have seen online and heard about, that is pretty quick.

I would find a local agent that you like and go with them. Ours has saved us tons of money. I call and ask questions all the time and since we have been customers for so long, they know us and it makes the working relationship easier. Sometimes the best rates do not equal the best coverage or service.

We have state farm as well and never had any problem. Then again we have never filed anything.
Before I had Allstate, they were on the expensive side but never had a problem with them paying claims when they had to.
I agree with PP that said, go local and get quotes.
Since you'll have home and auto chances are your prices will be much better than just having auto.

Worst-Amica! They just pulled that same thing on me. I found out there was a mistake on my policy. So I called to correct it. Even thought I have IN WRITING they would not charge more-they raised my policy almost 600. (For 1 car- no accidents no claims for over 7 years) They said they "laws" had changed and they could charge more now.

Allstate was horrible. We had our auto and homeowner's with them. We had nothing but problems with them when we stopped our auto deduct on our auto policy. The agent was rude and nasty to me and they actually charged me $190 for canceling the auto deduct. We left them and went to Geico for our auto. Saved us over $300 a year and they have been amazing. Our homeowner's is with Vermont Mutal I think or something like that. I don't know, my DH did that. The agent is awesome and they saved us a ton of money too.

i am a Travelers, MetLife, and a Hartford agent and havent seen any problems with any of my customers and we have quite a few. I'm currently with MetLife and have no problems. Just started writing Homeowners with Progressive and they have been great so far as well.

I have state farm for home and auto. They have been wonderful We had a house fire a year ago (lightening struck the roof) and they were great to deal with. I had no problems with the claims process. I have a wonderful agent (thanks Barbara Stewart!). I was still on the phone getting claims info and my agent was calling me.

we have usaa both both home and auto... good company for us.
and the motorcycle is insured through geico.

worse company i had to deal with... allstate.

State Farm has been easy to work with, but they are just too darn expensive. The auto insurance is about twice what others charge. As soon as we get our new car, we are switching.

We have USAA for auto insurance (had them for years). When we bought our house in Louisiana, USAA was rediculously expensive for homeowners. We use Armed Forces for homeowners insurance. We've only had to submit a claim once when Hurricane Rita blew through and knocked our roof partially off. We had no problems with them at all, they were great.

We've had Geico for our cars for 25 years. Have been very pleased with them and have never had a problem. Their rates are very low and their pay-out policy is very fast. When I've received checks from them I've gotten them in the mail 3 days after the estimate was faxed to them.

Our homeowners insurance is through Kemper. Very low rates, too. We've only had to make claims with them twice in 20 years. Once when DH ran into the garage door and once when we had hail damage. They were excellent.

We had State Farm for 20+ years for both our homeowners, personal vehicles, and work vehicles. Two years ago, they dropped our homeowners insurances...we had a claim for hail damage (our roof) and once for a chimney fire (less than $3,000). That's it for 20+ years. Needless to say, we called and cancelled all our auto insurance with them.

We are with Allied now, decent rates, but have never had to file a claim so we can't say much about them.
