Best and Worst Insurance Companies for Home and Auto????

We have Liberty Mutual for home and car insurance. We get special rates through the company where my dad works. We also use them for my renters insurance for my townhome at school.

Even with the discounted rate we still pay a crazy amount for homeowners insurance because of where we live. We are considered a high risk area for earthquakes (San Andres fault), wildfires (North of LA), mudslides, and floods. Other insurance companies wanted 2 to 3 times as much as Liberty Mutual.

Allstate is horrible. They were the absolute last insurers to pay out when my FIL died in a car accident. I finally got on the phone with their claims people and asked what their problem was--and I told them that everyone else (adding list of insurers) had already sent MIL their money.

USAA won't insure new home in FL unless your orders bring you here. If you are insured, they will keep you, but if you get a new house, then no.

Wife worked with them, and we have friends working for them.

we have USAA. They went up about 2 yrs ago by $400, then a month later sent a bill only $200 as they reduced it.

We switched to Farm Bureau when a co-worker had two cars totaled and a house fire in less than a year. They treated him so well that I moved to them and never looked back. We've also had good service.

State Farm gets my vote for one of the worst. I know some people swear by them, but they treated my Mother terribly after years of paying premiums with no claims. I've heard lots of other horror stories about them.

We have Farm Bureau for our home ins and Progressive for our cars and motorcycles. Progressive is sooo responsive!! We got hit in a hit and run a couple months ago. My ins fixed my car and then the person that hit us (later that day she turned herself in) had State Farm and they contacted two days after I got my car back saying they wanted to check on fixing my car! :scared1: That was 2 weeks after the wreck!! Slackers!:sad2:

We have All State (both home and auto) and have been very happy with them. We have had 2 claims (one auto, one home) in the past 7 years and both were handled quickly and easily (the auto was not our fault, but it did not increase our rates either).
Before All State, we had AAA for auto and they were AWFUL. They allowed my MIL to cancel me off our auto-insurance (no connection with hers what so ever) and they charged us our deductible and said we had an injury accident (we did not and are now part of a class action lawsuit against them for this).

Thanks for the replies....

Appreciate the information. Kinda what I figured that people would either have good or bad experiences with a company. Thankfully we have the time to continue to get quotes and look through everything. I was 'grandfathered' into USAA through my father so I don't qualify for the other military service insurance company.

We live in Philadelphia so our car insurance rates are ridiculously high. I was with Nationwide for about 5 years for auto. Never had claim, no tickets, nada. I got my renewal and it went up by about $1000 a year. I left them and went to State Farm. I had no problems with them at all. However, my rate increased by a couple hundred $$ for no reason so I went to Allstate about 2 years ago.... NEVER AGAIN!! They are the absolute worst. We had id theft and someone was using our checking account like monopoly money. Our insurance payment bounced because of this. I contacted Allstate to let them know what was happening and my agent was really great, told me I had a grace period, etc. It took a couple of weeks to get new account numbers and everything straightened out. I paid my montly insurance bill online. Here come to find out, Allstate cancelled my policy because they said the underwriter wouldn't write the policy because we were a financial risk. It took over a week to find all this out. The owner of hte AllState agency never returned my calls.
I switched over the State Farm again. This time I took all 8 of my policies... and we're saving over $1200 a year...
Moral of my story... State Farm is way better than AllState.

We had AAA for a short period but had a terrible experience with them so I canceled as soon as I could.

State Farm and Farmers have historically had pretty high rates when I have checked.

We have had Geico for a couple of years now and they have been really fantastic, we haven't had any claims yet though so not sure how they will handle that.

We have:
Auto
Home owners
Umbrella

Well I am in Florida and found it is hard to get renters insurance since the hurricanes of 2005. I went with Assurant for Renters Insurance and they have been great. Now for car insurance I use Ameriprise. You get a good rate for them when you are a Costco member. And you can bring you car to anyplace you want to get fixed after an accident, not where they tell you to go. On top of that their rates were better then USAA and Geico.

We switched to Farm Bureau from Allstate a few years ago - saved over $1k annually. We have had one claim (not at fault accident) and had a check from Farm Bureau very quickly.

The reason we had a claim is the at fault driver had USAA auto, and it was 3 weeks after the accident, our car was totaled and USAA uses an appraisal service to pay out a totaled car - just like with a home appraisal, appraisers can use whichever value they choose as a starting point. USAA' company used the lowest values out there, comps weren't comparable to my car, condition wise - so their offer was around $3k less than it should have been - I could not have even come close to replacing the car for what they offered. After their offer, I went back to Farm Bureau, who paid full NADA plus tax/title fees, and loss of use (we didn't need a rental car, since USAA was at fault we were entitled to a daily stipend) reimbursement - I had a check in hand 2 days after I talked to the adjustor. Farm Bureau then billed USAA for the claim.

At this point I am asking for experiences or recommendations for insurance companies.

DH and I have had AMICA for over 10 years and we love them. They are a great company, I always get excellent service from them and the rates are terrific. We have home, auto, and life.

We have auto insurance through Progressive. Earlier this week I was comparison shopping and couldn't find any even close to what we pay. Some were even double! We have never had problems with them.

We have everything with Liberty Mutual. They have an agreement with DH's work and the payments are withdrawn weekly from his paycheck. It is so awesome not to get that bill every six months! We don't even miss the money out of his check.

You are lucky - I had Liberty Mutual for car insurance and ended up getting rid of them because of the cost. I switched to Commerce Insurance and it saved me a lot of money.

Also, I have had to put in 2 claims since I got my policy with them - they were so professional, I had the check in a couple of days and the car fixed immediately.

I am so happy with them that I also got my condo insurance through Commerce. Between the AAA discount, low mileage discount and multi-policy discount I've got a great yearly rate.

We have Liberty Mutual for auto and house and State Farm for motorcycle. I've had nothing but positive experiences with both. We have never had a claim with State Farm, but we have had a major homeowners claim with Liberty Mutual (house fire) 5 months after changing to them and they have been great! I was expecting our premium to go thru the roof, but so far it has only went up $200 a year so I'm not complaining (the claim was over $100k).

You're lucky. State Farm has been AWFUL for house insurance! And for some of our neighbors, too!:mad:(where's the thumbs down icon when you need it? :sad2:)

We're all in the process of finding another company!!

We,too, have been phasing out USAA for our insurance needs. They would not insure our new home in Florida. (hurricanes) I understand USAA takes on additional risk, but what happened to SERVICE for our military? I think their mission is being sacraficed for the bottom line which is VERY profitable!:rolleyes1

Yes, it really, really upset me since USAA was founded when Army Officers could not get insurance and now THEY will not insure us. And we are here on orders. Grrrrrrrr!!!!!!

Same here :thumbsup2
