Which songs have been remade and are actually better than the original, and which singers should be tarred and feathered for their version of another artist's song?

The best covers...
1. Somewhere Over the Rainbow - Iz (outdoes the Judy Garland version)
2. I Will Always Love You - Whitney Houston (classic pre-crack Whitney)
3. Redemption Song - Joe Strummer (still enjoy the Bob Marley version, but this one tops it)
4. God Only Knows - Natalie Maines (somehow improves on a Beach Boys classic)
5. Don't Change - Andrew Farriss (slows down the classic INXS tune which improves upon the original)
6. Nothing Compares to You - Sinead O Connor (does anyone even remember the Prince version?)

The worst...
1. You Shook Me All Night Long - Celine Dion (Not a typo. She did it! Worst cover eveeerrr!!!)
2. When a Man Loves a Woman - Michael Bolton (argh#^%&*%!!!!!)
3. Dock of the Bay - Michael Bolton (Does an innocent kitten really die every time this song is played?)
4. True Colors - Phil Collins (destroyed Cyndi Lauper's song. Why Phil, why?)
5. American Pie - Madonna (seriously!?!!?!)
6. Whiter Shade of Pale - Michael Bolton (It's really hard to ignore this destroyer of classic tunes)

I particularly like The Cure's cover of "Purple Haze."

And Lou Reed apparently liked Duran Duran's cover of "Perfect Day"..."I think Duran Duran's version of 'Perfect Day' is possibly the best rerecording of a song of mine. I'm not sure that I sang it as well as Simon [Le Bon] sang it. I think he sings it better than I [did]. If I could've sung it the way he did, I would've. It wasn't from lack of trying. They recorded it the way I meant [to record] it, which is a real big thrill for me, so thank you, Duran Duran."

Isn't Andrew Farriss part of INXS?

Worst remake: Baby I love your way by Will to Power.

He is. Andrew and Kirk Pengilly(also from INXS) just did this remake on an INXS tribute album. They didn't do it as part of the band - if that makes sense.

There is a band with a version of I Will Survive out now. That is just wrong.

Worst cover I have ever heard is Lumidee's cover of "She's Like the Wind." It pains me to hear it.

I really enjoyed Alien Ant Farm's cover of "Smooth Criminal" I think the song is a lot of fun.

Best:

Seether cover of River of Deceit. So good!

Also worth a mention the Limp Bizkit cover of Faith. Like it much better than the GM version, then again I'm not a big GM fan.

I can't think of any worsts right now, but here's some of my favorites:

"Turn the Page" -- Metallica
"Radar Love" -- Nine Pound Hammer
"Land of Confusion" -- Disturbed
"King of Pain" -- Mudvayne

Some of my favorite cover songs are:

The Beatles "Day Tripper/If I Needed Someone/I Want You" - Type O Negative
Seal's "Crazy" - Mushroomhead
"Hey Joe" - Neal Schon, Paul Rodgers, and Trevor Rabin (acoustic and AWESOME)

Thank you for starting this thread! :worship:

I just found it recently, but my most favorite cover of all time is

John Mayer doing Free Fallin'

I love Phil Collins Groovy Kind of Love and Motley's Crue Smoking in the Boys Room. Worst cover Bob Dylan's Christmas album it is painful to hear.

Just reading those words strung together was painful and caused me to shudder.

Omg you are kidding me! I'll just have to take your word for it because I am not going to look for them on youtube.

Omg you know Nine Pound Hammer. I knew the lead singer once upon a time. :)

Best:

Smashing Pumpkins' cover of Landslide
Jeff Buckley's cover of Halleluiah
Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes' cover of Rainbow Connection.

It's pretty good, but I prefer the Dixie Chicks version best.
