We are considering a DL trip for 2008 and I am not sure which airport to fly in to??? We are in Chicago (O'Hare)...what is the closest and easiest airport to get to DL?? What's the closest in distance and/or best with the traffic??? Do they offer the "Magical Express" service that WDW offers?? Too many questions, right??!!

Thanks for your help!

Nah, that is not too many questions!

My favorite airport to fly into would be Orange County (SNA). :thumbsup2 It is basically the closest to the resort, and much smaller than LAX. It never seems as crowded, and the process of checking in/out and getting luggage just feels to go much quicker than LAX.

A free Magical Express is not offered, but you can get the Disneyland Express for $28 pp ($25 with coupon). I am unsure how good of a service this is since my first time using it will be this October, but I think a big bus will feel A LOT safer than the crazy shuttle and taxi drivers!!! However, a taxi will run you about $30-40 total one way (someone correct me if my memory is wrong plz), and shuttles are usually about $10 pp one way. If you choose a shuttle or taxi, think of it as the first ride of your trip!!! :scared1:

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

I agree, either SNA (Orange County) or Long Beach (LGB) are closest and most convenient airports for DLR. I usually take a cab from either of those.

Last year for our first trip to DL, we flew into SNA (aka Orange County, aka John Wayne, aka Santa Ana.) It is a couple miles closer to to DL than LGB (Long Beach.) Many car rental agencies are right in the airport, so it is fairly quick to get your rental car and be on the road.

This year we are foregoing the rental car, and chose to fly into LGB. LGB is apparently a very small airport (not even boarding/disembarking ramps to the planes), and getting through the airport is quicker, ie. check-in, security, getting your baggage, etc. However, there are no on-site car rental agencies; you'd be shuttled offsite to pick up a rental car.

It will be interesting to compare to our experience last year. :)

We've flown into LAX once (never again) and SNA twice. We really like SNA It's close, easy to navigate, and not crowded. WE've never had an issue getting our luggage or at check in. The security line was a little long last time but since our home airport is PHX (which is HUGE...lol), it really wasn't bad at all.

Our first trip into SNA we took a taxi. It was about $40 each way. The second trip we took the shuttle which was $10/ person each way. OUr taxi drivers were both kind of scary to ride with but the super shuttle driver was great.

LGB airport there is rental car place there, it is right across the street from the airport.

There is no shuttle to take you there it is just there with all of the rental agencys in the same building.

I found a great way to get a cheap rental car is to priceline it got an economy for 16 bucks a day for 7 days with tax and everything it was $127.00 not bad.

Thanks for all the great info! I am going to check prices for airfare to LGB and SNA to see which is a direct flight from Chicago O'Hare and which airfare is cheapest!
I definitely want to get the Disneyland Shuttle...is that $28 pp each way or round trip??
Thanks everyone for being sooo helpful to a DL newbie, like me!:woohoo:

I agree that Orange County (SNA) is much better and quicker to get to the DLR than LAX. It's cleaner, too. :)

I can only get direct flights into LAX with out driving into NYC so that's what we do. It's really not that bad. We always catch a shuttle to what ever rental place we've got a reservation for. It takes about 2 hours from hitting the ground to check in @ disneyland.

For what it's worth for those (like me) who prefer the flight schedules & pricing into LAX.

- Saturdays & Sunday mornings aren't too bad for traffic (both airport & freeways).
- If during the week, obviously avoid Rush Hour if possible.

Hi, fellow Chicagoan!

I've flown into LAX and rented a car twice. I had no problems with it, but it it a longer trip, and if there was traffic it could be way longer. That was the main problem with it. Big airports don't really bother me (since I'm used to Chicago ;) ), and LAX does offer more direct flights.

On my recent trip I flew into Orange County/John Wayne. It was very close to DL, which was a huge plus. However, a warning to you and anyone else on the transportation from the airport. I took a shuttle, and I didn't book one ahead of time because you didn't need to and I didn't want to be locked in. So I got there (my suitcase was missing, due to a close connection because of weather, so I was already in a bad mood) and found a guy in a Super Shuttle shirt. That was the shuttle I was planning to take, because I'd used them before in another city. I asked him for a shuttle to my hotel, and a waved a van over. It wasn't Super Shuttle, but he said it didn't matter, it was the same price ($10). So I got in and the driver said we would leave in 10 minutes. So I waited a couple of minutes, and then I called my mom. I talked to her for a while, and then another woman came and got in the van. He told her 8 minutes, but I had already been waiting for well over two minutes. Okaaaay. So I told him that it had already been more than 2 minutes, and he said no it hadn't. Then another couple came and got in, and he told them however many minutes it would be. I looked at my phone and I had called my mom 12 minutes ago, so I had already been waiting for 14 minutes, so I told him so. He said, no it hasn't been 10 minutes yet. His supervisor got involved and they were telling me that they write down the time when someone gets in and it hadn't been 10 minutes yet, but I knew it had been. So then they were like, you can get a cab for $40 if you want to. What do you want for $10? They were horrible. I wouldn't have minded it as much if they would have said we want to hold the van for a few minutes to see if extra people show up. But when they're just lying to me and telling me I'm wrong, and insulting and threatening me (they were acting like they were just going to throw me out), that was just outrageous. So I shut my mouth (with the occasional grumble ;) ), and waited until we left, and got to DL too late to see the DEP that night.

So I would be wary of getting a shuttle from that airport.

Going back to the airport, I called Super Shuttle the day before, and I had no problems with them. They were actually a few minutes early, but it produced no real problem. The driver was very nice. What a change from the arrival.

One other tip is that the security line at John Wayne was loooong. It wasn't a big deal for me, because I was there plenty early, but a lot of people were worried about missing their flights. They only had one line, and I think two conveyers, so it took a while. So show up early if you go through there.

And have fun! I love DL!

We always fly into LAX. Since we are coming from Hawaii, we usually do the red-eye and plan a breakfast to miss all of the traffic. But then again, I think my husband actually looks forward to driving in LA, so it's never been a problem for us.

Well, I am a MEGA-PLANNER...and I have already been working like crazy for our trip in October 2007 to WDW to stay at the Grand Floridian...I am already lloking into the 2008 trip to DL and I knew it would take some real searching for info becuase, frankly, I am stupid about CA...I have only been to Dl once as a 10+ year old...AND I have been to WDW Un-countable number of times as a child! Only been 2x since my daughter was born and that was 12 years ago...
ANYWAY...I will definitely be taking some type of prearranged shuttle! Just like I am doing in WDW...however, the one in WDW is "free"...or included in my price, whatever you want to call it! I am trying to find the SAFEST, FASTEST, and most convenient way of getting to/fro airport to DL resort. I think we are staying at the GCal...I am really excited to be going to DL for a change! I am so glad that they have had some growth in the resort options and expansion of the park(s)...

I flew into LAX and have had no problems at all getting to disneyland. Have a safe trip. :)
