Best acting in a movie.....ever

Sally Field in Steel Magnolias. Truly an epic performance--especially the part where she breaks down in the cemetary after Shelby's funeral.

Here a few off the top of my head:

Tom Hanks in "A League of Their Own"

William H. Macy in "Fargo"

William Hurt in "Kiss of the Spider Woman"

Bill Murray in "Lost in Translation"

Vince Vaughn in "Made"

Cary Grant in anything, James Stewart (same), Laurence Olivier (same), Paul Newman (same), Gregory Peck (same), Anthony Hopkins(Silence of the Lambs and Remains of the Day), Dustin Hoffman (Tootsie,Rain Man,Marathon Man)

Oh, I forgot about Al Pacino in Godfather 2 (my fave) and Scent of A Woman.

Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman

Denzel Washington in Training Day (his portrayal of that character scared me, didn't know Denzel had it in him)

Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York

Jack Nicholson in any movie

Sally Field in Steel Magnolias

Dustin Hoffman in Rainman

Al Pacino in The Godfather

Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire.

More when I think about it.... :p

Do you know Capote originally wanted Marilyn Monroe for that role? I can't see it in retrospect.

I really can't imagine anyone else in that movie other than Audrey Hepburn. It's definitely one of my faves.:sunny:

I also really liked Angelina Jolie in "Girl Interrupted." I really think that she stole the show from Winona. I love the very end where she tried to push Winona over the edge. I liked the dynamics between the characters.:sunny:

You guys are as bad as the Academy voters!!!;) Always picking tragic or serious dramatic performances...tears will win them over everytime.

I'll go with the precision needed for comedy or triple threat musical theatre performances.

Winner: Julie Andrews, Mary Poppins or Sound of Music, take your pick!

There are SO many that I could list, but at the moment, SEAN PENN comes to mind in "Mystic River" and "I Am Sam".
He is such a great actor.
Also, someone mentioned Tom Cruise in "Born On The Fourth Of July"....... excellent!
Of course, AL PACINO (in any movie) and ROBERT DENIRO (he is such a versetile actor..... he can do comedy, serious roles, everything).

Oops! I forgot the women!

Meryl Streep
Jodi Foster
Diane Keaton
Charlize Theron

I'd add Maggie Smith to that list.

Edward Norton in Primal Fear or American History X. He's amazing.
