I have been to WDW somewhere near 15-20 times and this is the first time that I have not rented a car ... so now you have received full disclosure....:rolleyes1

This was a short trip - Wed, Oct 19, 2011 through Sunday, Oct 23 - so we decided not to rent a car. Overall, I would give Disney an "A" for their transportation service. In general, we did not wait more than 10-15 minutes for a bus. It was great getting dropped off right at Magic Kingdom instead of having to go through the ticket and transportation center.

By Saturday night though I was getting tired of standing in line. We watched Illuminations from a terrace in France and my daughter (6) fell asleep during the show - it was at 10 that night Knowing that we would have to walk all the way to the front of the park and that there would likely be a line, we walked through International Gateway to the Beach CLub, walked through the lobby and jumped in a cab (zero wait). I would guess the walk is similar to getting to the front of Epcot but the guaranteed seat and immediate ride were priceless - it cost me $6!

A few other considerations for those debating on renting a car -
1. Magical Express
We had significant delays due to weather and arrived at 1:30 AM. At that time, Magical Express does not operate the same way - as you might imagine. We were told to go sit down and after 45 minutes or so they called 4-5 hotels....luckily we were the first stop, but the rest of the bus was in for a long ride after a long trip.... when we got to the front desk there was also skeletal staff (2 people) and online check in was not open (I had checked in online). So we spent another 45 minutes in line and basically got to our room at 3:30. If I had a car - I could have left the kids sleeping while I waited in line, instead they were basically laying on the floor of the reception area.
On the way back you are required to board coach at least three hours before your flight. I could have used another hour by the pool :cool1::cool1::cool1:
2. Food and Snacks
It kills me to pay $2.50 for a bottle of water when I can run to WalMart and grab a case for $4. We are also ok with cereal and bagels for breakfast, so our room is usually stocked. Whether it was the quick service or food court area at CS there was always a line and it was never quick. I felt like we lost sleep, park, or rest time that we treasure.
3. Hotel to Hotel
For dinner we definitely hit Chef Mickey's, BOMA and HDDR and getting from hotel to hotel is a hassle. Multiple buses - heard many people getting false information and very frustrated. On other trips we usually get Chic Fil A or something unhealthy like that at least once and it can definitely help pay for a day of car rental. For a family of 4 at the hotel breakfast was $40-60 and dinners were $120-$150.

I know other people really enjoy not having to drive - I am not dissing you. Just wanted to give my impressions for other who do not mind driving or are unsure!

Your habits seem very similar to our family. I was wondering what you would do if you were going in March during Spring Break. Would you rent a car or not? In the past, we have rented a car for much the same reasons you do, but this time we were thinking of trying it without a car. I'm wondering if I need to reconsider that decision since it will be Spring Break....

I highly recommend Garden Grocer for your in-room groceries, water and other supplies. Even with a rental car, I don't want to spend any of my valuable WDW vacation time shopping in a grocery store. We used GG on our last trips and it worked great!

We haven't tried Garden Grocer - this was a short 4 day trip so I thought we would survive. The rest of the family did but not sure the Finance Committee will!

We have gone several times during Spring break and I would not do it without a car! With codes found on Mousesavers I always pay less than $180 for a week. Even if you leave it parked on your MK day I think it is worth it.

We would swing over to DTD for dinner at Wolfgang Puck Express or Earl of Sandwich. If the kids decide (heaven forbid) they want to go to Legoland or Harry Potter for a day you can....just gives you more freedom...

For me part of vacation is not having to drive so I do use Disney transportation but also budget $ for cabs and it is still less than a rental without the hassle.

I use wegoshop for grocery delivery, breakfast, soda water beer & wine as well as snacks and fruit etc.

I call a cab for adr's at resorts as well as downtown disney. We usually stay at an epcot resort so we can use the boat or walk to from two parks so that helps.

Personally I like DME but we have never arrived later than 8sih luckily. It is so nice to skip the luggage carosel and head to the resort but we have also never had more than 3 resorts combined. So nice to hit the parks/pool and return to the room and have your bags and groceries waiting for you.

Our best friends always rent a car but for me a vacation is not driving even if it means taking things a little slower :)

I think budgeting money for cabs is a great idea if you do not like to drive on vacation.

I'm from Maine and there is no public transportation. We drive everywhere and it doesn't bother me. Having a comfy seat and being able to come and go as I want works for our family. It is nice that Disney offers so many choices!

Thank you for the input. So far, I've found a rental minivan (5 in our family) for $360 for March 9-17. I hope I can find something close to the $180 you have found!

Do you know how far out the codes get listed? I've been looking but they only have them til the end of this year I think.
I'm going in April- so when should I be able to get one?

We have done Disney both ways with and without a car. I like driving to most of the parks except MK and I think its a little easier getting out of a park after fire works or at closing when you have a car I have had to wait for as many as 4 buses to get back to my resort. Disney transportation is a benefit and I'm glad they have it but I dont always take full advantage.

Discount codes are generally good for a few months out, so keep checking as you get closer to your travel date.

You can purchase cereal, milk, juice, etc at many of the resort shops. Bagels are available at the Boardwalk Bakery and probably some other places as well. We generally use Garden Grocer or rent a car for a day but have also purchased a few groceries at the resort stores in a pinch. Prices are higher but less than the cost of delivery or car rental if you only need a few items. They don't sell cases of bottled water however.

We have been 3 times at March Break and wouldn't think of not renting a car. We love the freedom of being able to go off-site for a meal (Bahama Breeze :cloud9:) or shopping, beach day, etc... I have not booked my car for our March 2012 trip yet as there are no discounts out yet...still waiting.:rolleyes1
Everyone has their own feelings about renting a car but I tell people who don't that they're "not going to Florida , they're going to DisneyWorld".
