I'd like to take up photography. We travel quite a bit and I thought this would be a great hobby. I had taken classes in high school and want to start up again.
My question is what is the best camera for someone that is just starting out? I want something that is easy to use and provides great pictures. Cost really isn't an issue since I'm willing to pay for good quality.
Any suggestions?

Are you talking about a digital camera or film camera.

Is price really not an issue. Cameras range from 300 -5000 dollars.

How much flexibility do you want with the camera. Is it a serious hobby where you would want to possibily compete in photo contests?

Film camera...we have a digital but I'd rather have a film camera. I would pay up to $600 for a good beginner camera to start with. I don't want anything too "fancy" that pros use. As I become more serious then I'd move up onto something better. I would say it's going to be a serious hobby.

I use a Canon Rebel EOS. It is a really nice camera that has preset functions for different types of pictures but also lets you control apeture settings yourself if you want to give that a try.

I really find it to be the best of both worlds. :)

I would say the 4 major consumer SLR companies are

Nikon http://www.nikonusa.com

Canon http://www.canoneos.com

Minolta http://www.minoltausa.com/eprise/main/MinoltaUSA/MUSAContent/CPG/CPGProducts?cname=cam

Pentax http://www.pentax.com/products/cameras

All have a range of cameras form beginner SLRs to advanced SLRs.

Olympus is getting out of the SLR business, so their website suggests.

My first SLR was an Olympus OM 2 then I moved to a Nikon N60 and then a N70.

Then I went digital SLR.

Once you start buying the lenses, then you will be "married" to your camera brand because Nikon mounts are not interchangeable with Canon mounts.

Other issues to think about is the range of accessory lenses and flashes, because these will have a major impact on your photography.

Once you research the companies, then go to a store and actually hold them in your hands. Moxt camera stores will have at least two of the brands of SLR there.

Hope those links help.

I have the Canon EOS Rebel and I love it. My DH use to be a photographer many moons ago and he decided this would be the best camera for me to use.
