So I understand that last year stores in Bergen Co were not allowed to open early for Black Friday. We'll be visiting DH's family there over Thanksgiving this year, and it's his personal "national holiday." Does anyone in the area know if stores will be allowed to open early this year? If they are not, what is the closest shopping area (we'll be near Paramus)? Thanks, DH would be so sad to miss the annual crush of shoppers!

We were at Target around 5am last year in edgewater and they were open. I live in Bergen County and wasn't aware that they weren't allowed to open early. It just kind of is...whatever time they are open you go.

If you are going to be in Paramas and go to Garden State Mall...good luck...that place is a Madhouse even when it isn't the holiday season!

Bergen County still follows "Blue Laws" which means the stores can't be open on sundays so employees are promised a day off each week. It may be some of the smaller retail stores had to follow a modified blue law for opening.

I live in Mercer County and we don't have that, so I don't know for sure, but my guess is you'll find some places open fairly early.

Paramus itself has lawas about how early a store can open. I think they can't open for operation before 7 BUT people line up early or even overnight by the stores. We live in teaneck which is literally 4 miles from Paramus and we usually have to have a game plan. For instance if you are hitting target, the one in paramus doesn't open until 7 but people may line up as early as 4. But there is another taget in hackensack and they open a earlier. If you could send a potential list of the stores you want to hit i can let you know if there are others in Bergen county but will be open earlier.

We usually plan to hit 1 or 2 early but that's it.

But you are right, paramus is where all the stores are :)

Each town still has different versions of the blue laws that they follow. Certain towns allow shopping, sell only select items on Sunday, ect. Your best bet would be to contact the stores you are interested in.

Bergen County Retail Stores (this includes all their mega malls) area closed every Sunday.

Not trying to get into a petty argument.

The laws you kindly posted refers to the sale of clothing, accessories, building/lumber supplies, furniture, home/business furnishings, and appliances.

I worked in Hackensack. We were open for business on Sundays. We were able to sell food, toys, videos, books, and certain electronics. We regularly sold clothing, furniture, small appliances, housewares, and domestics items. But on Sundays, due to the blue laws, we were unable to sell those items and posted signs in the areas they were sold to reminded shoppers.

I too recall in days of old, that some stores used to rope off sections you could not shop in on Sundays. Is that still done, or have many stores just decided it was not worth it? Or maybe there are just not as many stores with a variety of products for sale.
