BREAKING NEWS

updated 6 minutes ago
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chris Henry has died.

Henry was hurt in what police describe as a domestic dispute with his fiancee.

More details to come from NBCSports.com. This is an ongoing story, so please check back.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say a dispute began at a home Wednesday and Henry jumped into the bed of the pickup truck as his fiancee was driving away from the residence.

Police say at some point as the woman drove, Henry “came out of the back of the vehicle.” He was found on the road about a half-mile from where police say the dispute began.

No one answered the door Wednesday night at the two-story home in the modest neighborhood. A limousine was parked in the long driveway, and there were tire tracks on the front lawn.

Henry was away from the team after breaking his left forearm during a win over Baltimore on Nov. 8. He had surgery and was placed on season-ending injured reserve following the game. Charlotte is home to his fiancee's parents.

Oh, geez...I just heard about this last night from CNN's Twitter. I was hoping for a better outcome than this but was afraid of the worst when they reported that he had sustained "life-threatening injuries." Poor kid.

I can't believe I missed news of the accident yesterday. Well, yeah I can with the little one, I seem to miss all the news I used to be on top of. lol

It's so sad. Chris Henry finally seemed to be getting his life back in order after screwing up so many times and then this happened.

It will be interesting to see if the fiance is charged with anything considering they brought in the homicide unit yesterday.

Oh gosh. I'm sorry to hear about that. :( I read about the accident yesterday. I was hoping and praying he'd make it. Terrible circumstances. I hope the person or persons responsible will get the full measure of the law.

:(

Twitter, Twitter, Twitter. I would be living in the societal-awareness equivalent of a black hole without CNN's Twitter.

That is very sad, I had hoped he would pull through when I heard about this yesterday. God bless his family :(

I too wonder if the fiance will be charged with anything....

From the reports I have read (which who knows if they were true or not), the young lady was trying to escape from Henry, and he jumped in the truck to chase after her. Sounds tragic.

Many thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time. What a tragic end to such a tumultuous life. I hope this does not come out cold, but a part of me believes if they left him in jail the many, many times he was put there, perhaps there would be a different outcome. At least in jail, he would have been safe.

If she felt her life was threatened she may not. I don't know.

Either way, he apparently jumped in the back of the truck, so could she be at fault for speeding up with him back there or is it his fault for jumping in the first place?

It's a good question. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds. But a terribly sad outcome.

But did she even know he was back there? I would think so, but you never know.

I have ridden in the back of a pick up truck many, many times and have managed not to fall out, even when the truck was going fast and/or turning corners. Makes me wonder what he was doing back there. Was he standing? Trying to get into the cab? If she was in fear for her safety and he was aggressively trying to get into the cab, then I don't think they would bring charges against her.

So sad that such a young life is taken so tragically. How horrible for his family and loved ones.

I am guessing he died of a head injury.

The back of pickup trucks are not safe to begin with. I would hope they investigate it fully, but if preliminary accounts are true--she got in the truck to drive off and HE jumped into the back of the bed. (In theory--that would have to be believed since it is unlikely he was forced there.)

They only drove about a half mile and that is the part that is sketchy to me. I'm betting she slammed on the breaks for whatever reason--and of course he was unable to hold on.

I would have a hard time seeing her being responsible for anything given the nature of the incident. (i.e. not the same as if she laid a hand on him or aimed a truck at him to hit him.)

Of course we'll have to see how it plays out.

Such a travesty on all fronts.

May he RIP.

I think you make a good point--he was likely not just sitting still in the back of the truck which many people people do regularly(and safely). There was some domestic dispute in progress and there's no telling how the driver was handling the vehicle or what state Mr Henry might have been in. Too sad.

I'm pretty sure homicide comes to any scene of a fatal or near fatal accident. I know a couple of years ago a young neighbor was hit by a car and homicide came and we were all hysterical thinking the worst. Luckily, he survived and it perfectly ok now.

The only thing I can think is that if he were standing and if the truck's tailgate were down and if she accelerated suddenly, then it might've been pretty easy to fall out. That's a lot of "ifs", though.

If she knew he was back there, and purposefully started driving to try and get him to fall out of the back, then she will be in major trouble.
