I just spoke with DVC directly to inquire about purchasing a DVC membership. I asked about resales and he said that if you purchase a resale(not through Disney), you are not entitled to use points toward a Disney Cruise or Adventures by Disney. He said that you can only use the Vacation Points toward a stay at any of the 10 core resorts. Something was supposedly signed by Disney this past Friday stating this? Is this true?

Wow. This is very interesting if true.

We've not heard this yet, but they have temporarily shut down on DCL cruises for DVC.

Wow, let's hope this is not true. Can anyone confirm or deny a Friday change to the treatment of resale purchasers???

Our very first contract for 300 points at OKW were purchased through resale with the Timeshare store. That contract came with banked points which we did use for a 3 night DCL cruise. I would have to say the DVC CM is full of ----!

Our last three add ons have been with Disney directly and there is no difference in using the points.

If I had a DVC guide tell me this I would be asking for a new guide. Just my own opinion.

If this is true, Disney is lowering the value of a DVC membership. They need to adjust their prices accordingly.

I should have stated that we were discussing Resales that were NOT through Disney. Does that make a difference? Can a non-Disney resale be subject to only using points for the core 10 DVC resorts?

Definitely news to me. We own both a direct sale and resale and have never shown any differences with making reservations or planning trips or cruises.

This better not be the case.

Darn it.. the magic is diminishing day by day. I was actually considering adding on through resale. I guess I will stick to paying full price and play it safe.

This is a policy that supposedly just took affect this past Friday. If true, it would not have affected your past cruises on points.

I would think they would have a huge legal issue on their hands unless they were somehow able to exclude all resale purchases from these point options starting at a future date. All the thousands of previous resale purchases have been considered exactly the same as a direct purchase with no restrictions. For them to try to go back and retroactively exclude those contracts at this point would be a class-action lawyers dream come true.

My guess is this is just the exagerated ramblings of a unprofessional guide trying to close a sale.

I really hope a TSS rep chimes in here because this concerns me especially since I am waiting on a ROFR.

I guess my question is how are they going to distiguish direct points from resale points going forward? That would be a waste of time.

As of this past Friday, no DVC members (whether they bought directly from Disney or on the resale market) can trade out for a DCL cruise until after September 2011. There is some sort of availability/imbalance problem but members have not been officially informed as of yet. We're only hearing about it from members who have tried to book a cruise and been told they will have to wait at least a year to do so, and even then, no guarantees. Here is the thread where this issue is being discussed. It's probably a good thread for you to read if you are considering purchasing DVC: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2537773

Has anyone thought of calling MS and asking them? Or do we just start bets on whether this thread hits 400 posts by Friday?

Ha - I must admit, I considered calling MS and my guide but then realized that 100 of us would have to call and then assess a concensus answer because we wouldnt all get the same one, which would mean a 400 post thread anyway...making popcorn seemed easier...

OP: You should be aware that some DVC guides will make some outrageous comments to discourage buyers from considering buying on the resale market. One common one is "You can't actually buy a DVC contract on the resale market because DVC takes every one of them via ROFR. You would just be wasting your time." (ROFR: Right of First Refusal, Disney's option to step in in place of the buyer and purchase the contract themselves. They do exercise this right if the resale price is very low, though lately they appear to be using it only on low-priced BCV contracts.)

As to whether the comment your guide made about denying resale buyers the ability to trade out is true or not, I don't know. Unfortunately too many of the guides either try to mislead buyers or are misinformed themselves so I am skeptical.

I've got ten bucks says it will ! ;)

guides say implausible things all the time (such as "DVC will be ROFRing all the resales at XYZ resort anyway, so you might as well buy direct.")

very unlikely that this will really be an issue. i would totally take your $10... ;)

I just called MS.

I knew I'd get nowhere with DCL so I inquired about ABD instead.

I have 420 points. Only 120 direct from Disney the other 300 are resale points.
I called inquiring making a 2011 Alaska ABD reservation. Gave MS my account # and she pulled up my available # of points. I could have made the reservation today which, of course would have used ALL my points. Resale and direct.

So, in my experience, whoever you spoke to was not telling you the truth. OR DVC execs haven't shared new details from a "secret meeting" with MS staff yet. Which is just as believable.

I'm sure it won't be an issue...... if it were...... I think DVC would have an extreme amount of pressure to reverse it's decision.

Besides..... it's not Friday yet ! :confused3

I tried to call DVC again to get clarification, but they keep directing me to the same person that gave me the questionable information in the first place...big help that is. Anyone else have any luck?

I'm kind of surprised that people in the thread seem to be taking this seriously. I guess anything is possible, but the potential of this actually being true seem virtually nonexitent to me.

If it were me, I would call the guide back and make sure I had it correct. I would say, "I just want to be sure I heard you correctly. Are you telling me it is an absolute fact that those who purchase resales not through DVC cannot use their points other than for DVC resorts." If he or she says, "yes," I would ask for it in writing. If they refuse, I would say, "ok, let me clarify it one more time, because if it turns out this isn't true, I need to make sure I can trust you if we're going to do business together."

I would think it's almost a certainty you will start to hear some hedging at that point about it being "a rumor" or about how "DVC can change it's rules in the future" or some nonsense.

I know these folks have jobs to do, but this is shameful in my view.
