Your plan sounds great! You're not doing anything wrong. It's them. (Do you listen to country music by chance? Just a tip I learned from Billy Currington, God is great, beer is good, and people ARE crazy. :rotfl::rotfl:)

Thanks for the encouragement ... I told Jay that the one thing I'm learning as I get older is that I have far less in common with the people I'm related to than I do with total strangers from the weird and scary internets.

I just have to keep reminding myself that their idea of a good time and our idea of a good time don't have to intersect for everyone to have a good time. Did that make any sense at all? :rotfl2:

A wonderful part of being on vacation is not rushing, just relaxing, going at your own pace. I'm sure you'll be absolutely beautiful at V&A. What a fantastic night of visiting with friends and enjoying delicious food that will be! :thumbsup2

Thank you. We are really looking forward to that dinner. :thumbsup2

The steak looks yummy and I'm totally intrigued by the booze. I'm gonna be looking for this on my next liquor store run.

It was the bottle design that first caught my eye with this ... then I read the label and thought "ICK!" And then I saw a small sample bottle and said, "Let's try it ... what's four dollars when you're not at Epcot?"

And it was goooooood!

OMG...did you need a jackhammer to get those burnt hockey pucks out of the pan or what? Those poor little tarts...they looked so promising until they met with the broiler of doom. :sad1:

Luckily I'd sprayed the pan pretty well non-stick cooking spray. And Jay chisled them out for me ... our pan is none the worse for wear thankfully.

Chelle, the Mexican looks muy delicioso!

Yes it did, and I'm not even that big a fan of Mexican food!

Brenda...those poor tarts. I'm guessing they were even beyond scraping out a little cheese to give to the cat.

I'm betting X&Y won't even blink about the Sci-Fi lunch, unfortunately. :sad2:

Be sure to save your lapu bra to wear to V & A! :rotfl2:

There was nothing salvagable in those poor tartlets ... :sad1:

As for X&Y ... they can have a nice lunch at Sci-Fi without us and all will be right with the world. As for my pineapple bra ... I'm thinking that's not dining room appropriate. :lmao:

Yes, you do need to do what is best for you!! It's so nice when you can take your time to get ready for a special event like V&A!! Pour a glass of wine and enjoy getting ready.

AND, you look wonderful. I can't believe it take serious effort for you to look as good as you do pretty lady. :)

Jeanne ... I don't deserve such a nice compliment but thank you.

Brenda - The steaks look good, but your poor little tartlets. And the brie! so sad! Interesting bottle for your new booze.

Jay is a steak master ... he's gotten really good at grilling them "just so." And the tarts ... I'm still bummed about how they met their end.

I think the bottle is way cool on the new liqueur ... it's what first caught my eye.

It only works if you say "verrrrrry interrrrresting" when you poke your head through.

Excellent! I will try to remember ... if I can find a pith helmet. :rotfl2:

Time for the Final Accounting of the Festival Demos:

Sept 25 Barcelona Tapas & Wine
Sept 25 Caymus Vineyards
Oct 3 Suvir Saran
Oct 16 Todd English
Oct 17 Greg Richie
Oct 19 La Crema Winery
Oct 30 Andrew Zimmern

November 1 is going to be World Showcase Domination day since I don't have anything else scheduled. I plan to start with the Axis powers and then move to the Allies and save the neutrals for last.

Nice line up ... I will be interested to find out what Zimmern is going to do. We just added La Crema today, but I think ours is on the 21st.

Axis / Allies ... :lmao: That is brilliant! What will you do with France, though? The Vichy regime ... I'd be wary of the wine ... collaborators have been known to add antifreeze to the wine. ;)

It was brought to my attention yesterday that there's only a month left before some of us can start running through the streets of WS and shouting "FESTIVAL" like that Star Trek episode.

WOOHOO!!!!!

Those poor tarts, did the pan survive?

The pan survived just fine and dandy for another attempt months from now.

oh, and you do know you can get the Lapu Lapu without the pineapple for a much-reduced price (it's about $14 with the pineapple and $8 without)

I did not know that but I'm going to have to be a dork and pay extra for the pineapple ... and I don't even like pineapple. :rotfl2:

I came online @ 8:45 pm and saw about the dessert party. Called and found out the only night I could get was 9/29 during MNSSHP. Talk about a sugar high. :lmao: Now I'm debating if I should cancel my ressie at CP for 4:25 and just go CS that night.

Those poor raspberries :sad2: Everything else looked great! The drink sounds interesting. I'm one that doesn't love ginger so that sample bottle is a good idea :thumbsup2

Sad sad little tarts ... oh well, sometimes you gotta share your failures and it was such a sad, funny picture that I had to post it. And the small bottle was a great way to test the booze without committing to it - worked really well in this instance.

Sort of a recipe, but mostly on my own.

Yellow saffron rice, follow directions. Before serving I threw a couple handfuls of mexican style shredded cheese on it and stirred it in to melt.

For the shrimp, I peeled them even though the restaurant I get this dish at leaves the shell on. I don't like peeling my food while I'm eating it. Just me

1lb shrimp, thawed (peeled if you're like me)
1 onion chopped roughly
2-3 cloves garlic, chopped
1 green pepper, large chop
1 avocado, sliced
1 large or 2 small tomatoes, sliced
1/2 can of enchilada sauce
olive for pan
salt & pepper to taste

Saute onion, garlic & green pepper in oil until cooked. Add shrimp, cook for about 5 minutes. Add tomatoes, enchilada sauce, cook till heated through. Add avocado slices before serving.

Serve over cheesy rice.

As I said, not really a recipe. Make sure your shrimp is cooked, but not over cooked. The rice takes about 25-30 minutes, the rest is about 10 minutes.

Sounds tasty!

1. I don't think you're doing anything wrong, and I'd be thrilled to step in as a new niece :goodvibes
2. I'd love to see you do that at "palmhenge" :lmao:
3. Bummer to miss the boozy milkshakes, but I don't blame you for wanting more time to relax and get ready for dinner.
4. I do not believe that you need that much time or work! But, the relaxation before such a nice meal out is a good thing.

Thanks very much. I knew my friendies would understand.

Nice line up. Marcel and I will be at the Caymus on 9/25 also. I would love to go to the Barcelona T&W but we are leaving work at noon that day and are not sure if we will make it in time so I didn't want to prepay. If we get there in time and there are still openings we will try for it. Sounds yummy.

The tappas and wine event sounds like a great idea - that's another one that I'll be interested to hear all about. And Caymus ... yum! You guys will have a great opening weekend. :goodvibes

sounds about right Brenda..as long as you and Jason live it up in Foodie heaven..all will be well in the world!

SIDENOTE about tarts...poor little things..they had no chance ;) hahahah! Question, what kind of pastry did you use? i have a tube of croissant, 3/4 a wheel of brie and raspberry preserves, and i think cups like that would be a nice change from the usual big log o' baked brie i usually make...

Thanks Gina! I use puff pastry whenever I make cheesy tartlets. Too lazy and honestly, not good enough, to make my own pastry so I usually buy Pepperidge Farm Fresh From the Freezer! It works pretty well as long as you don't broil it. :rotfl2:

Let's hear it for tapas and wine.

My mother wanted another wine demo but they moved the one she picked to October 19. So I picked out tapas and wine as a substitute. Getting the demos done on the 25th means we won't have too much wine before the Tutto Italia pairing on the 26th. She doesn't know I booked tapas yet but she will trust me with the food ;)

So the big question I have now is...should I book the Wishes dessert buffet? I looked into booking it on my birthday but it apparently isn't available Sundays while the dinner buffet is held in that area. But I have a Tuesday and Wednesday free. It's freaking expensive. I'm thinking just get my own dessert and watch fireworks from the hub. I could buy three desserts for what they're charging now.

I think it's great that your mom enjoys the F&W Festival as much as you do ... outside of my step-dad I don't think anyone in my family gets much out of it. Of course, I'm assuming X&Y are going to follow in Grimmie's footsteps, but they could surprise me. ;)

As for the dessert buffet ... I think you already mentioned this but aren't you attending one in NY? I agree that the price increase is annoying but I ended up deciding in favor of trying it only because I don't know when we'll get back to WDW and since it's a fairly new, unique event I'd like for us to try it before it disappears.

I apologize if I have missed anyone or anything here but I've been extremely busy as we're finally selling my parents' house after being on the market a VERY long time. Also getting DS settled at school has kept us busy!

Chelle - The Mexican meal you fixed looked fabulous!

Bendy - The raspberry brie tarts on the other hand.... looks like what I end up with when I try my hand at baking.

I've only booked one demo, 10/19 culinary demo - The Wave. I may book a few more events but our schedule is jam packed already!:yay:

I'm going to try and keep up with you chatty ladies!:goodvibes

Hiya Kathy! Congrats on getting the house sold and the youngster settled at school. And .. we're booked for that same demo on the 19th, so I guess we'll see ya there!

:scratchin: hmmmm... I wonder if you get the pineapple at the beginning of your vacation and bring it back every time if they will refill it for a discount...

 :scared1: :rotfl2:

Just like those half-yards they used to sell at Rose & Crown ... we miss those so much.

I have a DIS friend who texted this info to me when she saw it. I was in meetings and didn't get it until about 2:00. When I had the chance to call I was told there was no availability at all for any night throughout our entire trip! I found that hard to believe so I called back again. And this time I got the very same answer. Wow. Word traveled fast for certain!

Elin, sorry you weren't able to nab the dessert party for your trip. They do have a cancellation policy in place (guests can cancel up to 24 hours in advance) so maybe you could keep checking back on the off chance someone had to cancel?

If they offered this as an alternative "refillable mug option" I would be all over it.

So would we!

I booked today for the party on 10/3. It was $23.42 per person (tax included). And I was told by my CM on the phone that there is a one day prior to your party date cancelation policy.

That's exactly what we were told, too.

when or where you are going to meet a friendie.

I'm in the bank we use for work speaking with Diane the teller. We knew each other was a Diser but I found out she's also a friendie :lmao: AA's Grammy is the teller :rotfl: I was telling her about my upcoming trip and she asked if it was for the F&W and I said no, thats Octobers trip and I'm going for a friends birthday. After a bit more chatting she asked about the thread and said the "Bendy" one. After a laugh I said yes. So, you never know when or where you are going to meet up with a friendie :yay:

What a great story! :goodvibes

OK, friendies... Now that I am home and things are somewhat calmer, I had the chance to look at the Seminar bookings online.

Other than Warren Brown from "Cake Love" in DC I am not familiar with most of the wineries or chefs. I could use some guidance if anyone has time to comment.

I am contemplating the following

Wines/Wineries:

Concha y Toro Wines ~ Santiago, Chile
Viñedos Emiliana Wines ~ Santiago, Chile
Trivento Wines ~ Mendoza
King Estate Winery ~ Wilamette Valley, Washington
Milbrandt Vineyards ~ Wahluke Slope, Washington
Wines from Puglia Italy... I have no idea about this one!

Chefs:

Culinary Demonstration / Wine Presentation - Chef Bob Waggoner, Charleston Grill, Charleston, South Carolina (but he is no longer at this restaurant...)

Culinary Demonstration / Wine Presentation - Chef Pascual Oudin, Pascual's on Ponce, Coral Gables, Florida

Most of the other Demos and Presentations are by WDW Chefs and I will have to think long and hard about booking one of those.

Oh, I will be doing these solo. So I can do a few more than I would have done if myBob were to go too. He is just not interested!

Any thoughts?

I will call every day or two and we will also try the day of the event to see if there are any openings. It is not the end of the world, but it would have been nice. I am VERY glad you were able to book it today! :thumbsup2

turn it so the words dont' show and they'd never know the difference at Tambu

I love the pineapple:love:. I want one:goodvibes.

I want to steal Catherine's idea and don a pith helmet while poking my head through palmhenge to explore. :rotfl2:

It only works if you say "verrrrrry interrrrresting" when you poke your head through.

Hey! That pith helmet was my idea, thankyouverymuch! It was Catherine's idea to act like Arte Johnson, though.

I'm hijacking Catherine's list and modifying it a bit.
Oct 14 Bunratty Mead
Oct 16 Todd English
Oct 17 Greg Richie
Oct 19 La Crema Winery

I added the La Crema one on a whim because Catherine was talking about it, and my DME pickup will be far enough away for me to go. And I know I like their pinot noir, having opened a bottle a few days ago. I'm hoping I can try something else they make. :cloud9:

It was brought to my attention yesterday that there's only a month left before some of us can start running through the streets of WS and shouting "FESTIVAL" like that Star Trek episode.

Well, you gave me that idea for a title of the DL festival food report. I'd really enjoy a bunch of us yelling "FESTIVAL!" around World Showcase. :rotfl2:

Thanks for the encouragement ... I told Jay that the one thing I'm learning as I get older is that I have far less in common with the people I'm related to than I do with total strangers from the weird and scary internets.

Yep, I find it scary having so much in common, too. ;)

Axis / Allies ... :lmao: That is brilliant! What will you do with France, though? The Vichy regime ... I'd be wary of the wine ... collaborators have been known to add antifreeze to the wine. ;)

That antifreeze line is one of my favorite quotes from The Simpsons. "Whenever my faith in God is shaken, I think of the miracle of antifreeze!"

I like the Axis/Allies plan, too. I'm probably going to do that in December. :)

turn it so the words dont' show and they'd never know the difference at Tambu

:rotfl2: I don't think that would make a very comfy pineapple bra ... not that a real pineapple would be any better.

Congrats to all those who got the seminars and the dessert party....but Elin, I am so sorry you didn't get in....I know you were really hoping to be able to do it.

The food porn looks great....with the exception of those tarts, of course! Brenda, I feel your pain when it comes to broiling.....things always seen to end badly when I turn the broiler on!:lmao:

Hi Heather! How's your daughter doing with kindergarten? Is she still having fun or is she like one of our nieces here in Stinktown who declared after four days that school was sooper-poopy?! :lmao:

I have a question that's going nowhere on the codes and rates board so I'll ask it here:

Got our room and friends booked on my 40% discount; if they want to make it a package, do we risk losing the discount, or will CRO just check if that discount is still available at CS? My email originally said to ask about packages available, too, so I'm assuming that it would just take 40% off the room part. Also, who calls, me who has the pin number or them since CRO put the reservation under their name when I called for their room and gave them a separate confirmation number?

The reason I'm asking is that I've priced out food for them and we think that the DDP would be a better deal with the two 17 y/o to feed.

I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you on this one ... maybe you should send a PM to our resident Friendie travel agent - Michelle - and she could help you.

You know that the refillable pineapples are only good for the stay that you purchased them  :lmao:

Just like those half-yards!

Still don't know when we're going for F&W :sad2: Jon called MS this morning, but could only get Mon - Thurs, and we want/need Sun - Thurs. --need because we have 40 points in holding to use and at 11 pts a night for a studio, 3 nights means we'll lose points-- We'll have to keep calling and checking and maybe someone will cancel a Sunday night.

I hope you are able to work something out so that you can visit the festival sometime this fall.

Thanks for the welcome home everyone! It really was a great trip and I'm sad to be back, but October will be here before we know it:thumbsup2

Glad to know that you had a good trip, Robin!

I think a few people we asking about Paradiso 37. I did eat there the first night of my trip. It was just me since my friends had not yet arrived. I did not need a ressie although I had one (good DISer that I am:goodvibes). I really just had some appetizers since that's what sounded good:thumbsup2 I had some salsa and guacamole which both tasted homemade and were very good as were the chips. And I had the "El Salvadoran Pupusas" (just looked this up on allears) which were just like little mini tacos. They were good too and it was just enough food. Of course I had a yummy drink too. Sadly the drink menu is not on allears. But I think I had a "Mangled Margarita" which was layers of frozen sangria and frozen margarita. It was good but very sweet, I could not finish it. I'd probably try a regular frozen margarita next time. I'd go back again, it was a nice atmosphere and a great place for apps and a drink :goodvibes

Thanks for the information about Paradiso ... we're talking about heading over there one night if time permits. It sounds like a good place for a drink and some snacks.

Congrats to everyone who got their wine tastings booked. I'm still debating if I want to do any -- again problem is the ones I would do are not when I am going to be there. There are a couple that do interest me so I'm going to see if I can tweak my schedule to make it work. If not I'll just booze it up at the booths!

This is the first year that a lot of stuff / presenters / boozers have been at the festival at the same time as us. I had to force myself to stop booking stuff after a while or we wouldn't have time to breathe. :rotfl2:

Sorry about the brie! So sad. I love brie in a pastry puff too and I'm sure they would have been great had they not gotten overly toasted.

I think you deserve some time to relax and get ready for your dinner at V&A. Hopefully you'll have a nice balance of doing things by yourself and doing things with X and Y. If there's one thing I learned after this trip, it's always nice to have some alone time, and you can't please everyone all the time:goodvibes

I hated to waste the cheese more than anything else. And yes, when they are cooked properly they taste divine!

And thanks for the advice about the trip - I know you're right I just have to keep reminding myself not to feel so responsible for their experience (unless I belch in their faces or steal their food ... ).

I just did the party last week, you're really going to enjoy it! Just a note on the cancellation policy, my friend's son got sick that night and I was able to cancel for 2 members of our party about an hour or so before and they refunded our money. So just in case something happens, they were really nice about cancelling.

Yay for the dessert party! Did the time conflict for your dinner or did you just think it was too much food? I know, how can there be too much food? We actually did Crystal Palace for dinner before the party, but had about an hour and a half from dinner to the dessert party. I still managed to stuff my face. Oink oink! I would love to do it again but with the MNSSHP going on it really limits the nights while I am there so I think I'm going to have to pass. I'd have to extend my trip to do all the things I want to do. Sad part is I would consider that if I didn't already have my plane ticket:lmao:

Thanks again for the great info - nice to have some flexibility on a pre-paid event for a change. As for us canceling Coral Reef it was just because of timing ... our ADR was for 7:15 that evening and our dessert party reservation is for 8PM. Something had to give and that something was the fishies.

Just recalled that I am doing a dessert party in New York City on October 10 that might just put the MK one to shame, so not gonna book another one.

Good call. Take lots of pictures, ok? :thumbsup2

I came online @ 8:45 pm and saw about the dessert party. Called and found out the only night I could get was 9/29 during MNSSHP. Talk about a sugar high. :lmao: Now I'm debating if I should cancel my ressie at CP for 4:25 and just go CS that night.

Hooray for you, Bridget! I'd go CS, but that's just me ... I loves me a dog from Casey's!

I'm a big fan of Warren Brown and would pay to see him and Mary Meyer again - they were great the last time we saw them and their desserts were really good, too.

As for the other things you listed I'm no help at all, but I've been hearing really good things in general about Chilean wines. For $5 a demo it might be a good way to try something new.

I will call every day or two and we will also try the day of the event to see if there are any openings. It is not the end of the world, but it would have been nice. I am VERY glad you were able to book it today! :thumbsup2

Thanks Elin. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

I love the pineapple:love:. I want one:goodvibes.

I like the Massachussets address ... :rotfl2:

Hey! That pith helmet was my idea, thankyouverymuch! It was Catherine's idea to act like Arte Johnson, though.

D'OH! :headache: A thousand apologies ... I just knew that it came from one of the two of you. I will be sure to give credit where credit's due if the picture manages to be taken. ;)

I'm hijacking Catherine's list and modifying it a bit.

Also a nice line up ... we would have liked to nab the Greg Richie demo but it's too close to the time that our Tutto pairing begins. I bet his demo is going to be really good.

Well, you gave me that idea for a title of the DL festival food report. I'd really enjoy a bunch of us yelling "FESTIVAL!" around World Showcase. :rotfl2:

I plan on doing it! :lmao:

Yep, I find it scary having so much in common, too. ;)

Thank goodness we're all harmless.

We are harmless, right? ;)

That antifreeze line is one of my favorite quotes from The Simpsons. "Whenever my faith in God is shaken, I think of the miracle of antifreeze!"

I like the Axis/Allies plan, too. I'm probably going to do that in December. :)

That's another great quote ... the Simpsons is like a never-ending vein of rich quotes just waiting to be mined for DIS-foodies everywhere!

Brenda - I am a big fan of Chilean wines too. But we have gotten a couple I would rather never taste again. And I haven't kept track of what wineries they were from! Bob thinks I ought to book as many of these things as I want. I figure he has a bunch of books coming up on hold at the library and plans to do a lot of reading while I am out boozing and schmoozing.

Tweaked the dining reservations a bit tonight ... that on-line system is awesome when it works and when it doesn't over-book by mistake.

Anyhoo ... I canceled our dinner ADR for Coral Reef on the 14th and then went back and canceled a lunch ADR at Rose & Crown on the 23rd and replaced it with lunch at Coral Reef.

Since we've dined at Rose & Crown so many times we thought it would be easiest to give up so that we can try something new. Here's hoping we made the right decision!

We'll still have to stop in the pub so we can try a Welsh Dragon. :thumbsup2

We did a Winemaker's Luncheon at the Flying Fish which featured the Milbrandt wines. It was wonderful. We thought their wines were very good. I would give the seminar a try.

We have tried some Concha y Toro wines and have found one that we think is wonderful which is called Winemaker's Lot. It's a red wine blend.

Lately we have been trying some great Italian wines. We booked one of the Puglian Wine Seminars. We also think this may be a good choice.

We have friends who love Kings Estate wines.

Hope this helps. :)

I booked a Puglian seminar on 10/20. I'd book a bunch of them if I were you!

I did, Kat! :teeth: :yay:

Here is what I did this morning:

Got the Wishes Dessert Party on October 5 (apparently there is a conflict with the DDP and unless the CM knows to look for it without that in the profile it won't come up with any availability. It wasn't our first choice, but we got it taken care of.)

October 3 - Warren Brown/Mary Myers "Cake Love" culinary demonstration/wine presentation seminar

October 4 - Concha y Toro wine seminar

October 5 - King Estate Winery wine seminar

October 6 - Milbrandt Vineyards wine seminar
October 6 - Taste of Puglia wine seminar (there was more than one of these to choose from so I took the most generic one. I think!)

Tweaked the dining reservations a bit tonight ... that on-line system is awesome when it works and when it doesn't over-book by mistake.

Well I will have stuff up about Coral Reef lunch in time to change minds if necessary. I have lunch there September 1.

The New York dessert party is sponsored by Godiva so I think I will stick with that one. If they still have the MK one in December I'll likely do it with a bunch of people.

I think!)

You go girl!:cool1:

Hi Elin! I booked the Warren Brown/Mary Myers culinary demo for my daughter, Jordan. Hopefully, she'll be off work & will be able to attend. I'll tell her to keep an eye out for you! :goodvibes

So, is anyone going to be in WDW for Halloween? pirate: Where is the list of everyone's dates - I looked on the front page & it wasn't there? I just booked a short trip for my younger daughter & I to go visit Jordan (the one who's doing the Disney College Program). We'll be there October 30th - November 3rd. I tried to book the weekend of the Brenda B-day festivities, but airfare was over twice as much and there weren't any DVC rooms to be had. :sad2: So, everyone has to have a drink for me at the party! :dance3:

Have a great day!

I've been to the Kowloon! It's on the other side of Boston so it's not convenient for a quick visit. The place is HUGE! and the food is pretty good too.

Me too!! it is a HUGE restaurant...with good scorpion bowls ;)

happy friday everyone!! I am trying out a different kind of pasta recipe tonight..Greg and i have soooo much food in our freezer and pantry ( and fridge for that matter) and we are going to try to use as much of it up before we go away in October as we can..which i LOVE the idea of because i love home cooking and experimenting..and saving money on not buying too many new items is key! Tonight will be grilled chicken that I am thawing and a pasta primavera with zuchini from my aunt's garden, sundried tomatoes ( if i still have some in my pantry ;), garlic and goat cheese...hope it turns out ok...if not, there is arugala for a salad ;)
