I have to vent. Ever have one of those days? Today I have decided that the Griswolds have absolutely nothing on my family.

Where to begin?

Let's see... While me and the kids were away in North Carolina last week my darling Fred was entrusted with the care and well being of our beloved pets, which include a frog, a parakeet and three dogs. I left explicit written instructions (or so I thought) for Fred on feeding, going out, etc. My dogs are escape artists so my biggest fear was one would be MIA when we got back. Cut to last Friday, all pets were present and accounted for when we returned, but my sigh of relief was premature.

Today Drew goes to refresh the bird's food. He normally requires refill/refresh every 3-4 days so this was the first time anyone explicitly checked the food although we had refilled the water several times since we returned. Fred had just fed him Friday so all should have been well. Come to find our beloved parakeet was sitting on the bottom of the cage (still moving) and well... we just knew there were issues. Drew looks at the bird's food bin and discovers that instead of birdseed, Fred apparently refilled the birdseed with the wood shavings that are for lining the bottom of the cage. Not even joking-it is times like this I wonder if my husband is going senile... seriously. To cut to the chase, while we tried to feed the bird, it was just too late. Drew held him until he passed. Drew was devastated because this was his parakeet. To make matters worse he is leaving for college tomorrow and this really did not end his last day at home on a good note or set him off on his journey in a positive way.

So now trusty old mom here breaks out the sewing machine. I have become an ace at making custom coffin linings for a variety of pets. Try not to laugh. Yes, the things we do for our children. It gives the kids comfort that their pet is resting comfortably and in style. So now Drew in his grief takes the bird in his makeshift coffin and goes in the back yard to dig the parakeets final resting place. Just when you think the day could not possibly get worse... here is where it all takes the bizarre turn and the Griswold effect takes hold.

My old, fat, overweight, lazy, sausage-like Lhasa Apso was outside. This dog is so fat he cannot jump up onto the couch into your lap like the other dogs because his butt is pure lead. All of a sudden this same dog develops the stealth and agility of an Olympic athlete. This is where we add insult to injury. He jumped twice the height of our couch up onto the patio table where the bird is. Meanwhile Drew is vigorously digging a hole through tears with his back to said dog/bird. Do you see this coming? Because we didn't. Before any of us knew what happened the dog was up on the table and swallowed the bird in one fell swoop. The only evidence of the birds existence was the three or four feathers dangling out of the dogs mouth (sorry if that was way TMI). Stunned doesn't even cover it and much as we tried the dog was just not giving it up. Drew had pure meltdown and me, Fred & Rachel didn't know whether to laugh, cry or just be flat out horrified. Anyhoo... Hollywood needs to call me. Our house is just a comedy of errors. I'm still shaking my head in shock and amazement while vacillating between wanting to kill Fred and wanting to kill the dog. I need a drink!

Alison, I just watched the original National Lampoon's Vacation the other night, and I am totally picturing this as a scene in that movie! I'm so sorry for Drew though....that's a rough thing to deal with the day before you have to leave to go back to school.

I'm glad I had some food porn and the parakeet story.

We just got a call about 30 minutes ago that my grandmother just passed. Thanks for all the pixie dust, food porn and (I'm sorry Drew!) laughter. It helps.

Lori, I'm so sorry for your loss. You and your family will be in my thoughts.

THIS is what happened last Thursday up at the lake...

And to think.. I missed an opportunity to get Planky's picture with the Sheriff's officer... :headache:

Unbelievable, I like your ideas with what you could do if you buy a cabin there!

I feel so bad for Drew  It is truely a Griswold story and I did have a little laugh even with the tears in my eyes.

Lori I'm so sorry to hear about your Grandmother :grouphug:

I saw the menus on there this morning and they look pretty good! Wonder how the prices will be--similar to Spoodles maybe?

I hate wearing nametags.

I like olives.

Back to work now.

Lori... so many hugs coming your way... I hope that hospice was able to make it an easier passing for her... we are here for you...:hug::hug:

And last but not least, Michelle, Michelle. We are a peace loving bunch around here, and probably don't know too many bail bondsmen to call for you. Try to stay out of trouble, girl. ;)

The good thing is that 1/2 of the people I know up there are related to the Sheriff... I would have been out right after dinner... (homemade)

I hate wearing nametags.

I like olives.

Back to work now.

But we won't know who you are... :rolleyes1

Thanks, everyone. We're doing ok.

And Michelle....some of us know who TDC Nala is. :rolleyes1

Shovan that is HORRIBLE! I am happy you ended up in a good place but with times the way they are I don't care how much good press you get - you should be doing what you can and nice! I hope it hasn't become too big for itself!

I still don't know what to think about that. I do know the snooty rude attitude does not have us rushing over there.

Sheryl

Michelle, I'm so glad you didn't end up in the hoosegow for swimming in the lake!

KeepMovingForward, That is really one unbelievable story! I feel really bad for your Drew! :sad1: Not a great way to head off to college. That is one family story that will be told again & again.

TDC Nala ... I hate nametags, too. I refuse to wear them most times. They are purely voluntary at this shin-dig. And ... if you're the only person without one then we'll all know who you are anyway!

Since this is Jay's weekend to work he was able to work a "normal" shift today so we're settling in with some new coffee and a long-desired movie of mine that's finally arrived: Lincoln. It's a TV movie made in the late 80s based on Gore Vidal's novel of the same name. Probably one of my all-time favorite historical novels ever ... a great read with phenomenal historical research. I read Doris Kearns Goodwin's Team of Rivals about Lincoln's cabinet a few years ago right after it was published and I swear to you guys I thought she plagarized from Vidal there were that many similarites. :lmao:

If anyone here has an interest in a more "real" depiction of Lincoln's years in the white house I highly suggest reading Gore Vidal's novel - it's really entertaining and very informative at the same time.

Yeah... can you imagine if I went skinnydipping???

& it's such a nice little looking jail... they even have lawn chairs outside...

sorry to interrupt; long-time lurker (found oybolshoi's food report in march-ish--and have neglected my kids since then; actually grew up in o'fallon, mo):
apparently, doris kearns goodwin has been accused of "borrowing" before, i'm sure you knew this. I used to really enjoy what she had to say and then, well, you know the drill, it is just upsetting that she's no better than i was when i failed to credit a few sources in my 11th grade term paper on henry the eighth; AND I DIDN'T GET A HEFTY ADVANCE:lmao: anywho, looking forward to your review of Lincoln.

Hello de-lurked reader! :goodvibes I had to laugh when I read that you were neglecting your kids ... :rotfl2: And don't apologize ... there's no interrupting here - we just talk - so feel free to pop in and join us whenever you feel the urge.

Yes ... I was very disappointed a few years back when the charge of academic ...ummm, dishonesty ... came out about Kearns because she was always someone I really enjoyed reading and there just aren't that many female historians who get the exposure she does.

The movie was enjoyable - keeping in mind that it's a good 20 years old and was made for tv, so it's a little choppy. It lacked a lot of the detail of the book and spent far too much time on Lincoln's personal life as opposed to his political life, which in my humble opinoin is what made the book so fascinating in the first place.

As is usually the case ... the book is far superior to the movie. :thumbsup2

Random ramblings...

I got my F&W booklet in the mail last night. I didn't think I would get one this year since our APs and TIW have both expired and won't get redone until we get there in October.

This weekend I am going to PA for MagicMeets2009. I have never been to one of these meets but know many of the people who are presenting it and lots of the attendees. Bob was supposed to go with me. He has "chosen" to do something else instead. This is one of the reasons staying married for 36 years is so hard, friends. My feelings are hurt and I am angry, to boot. He doesn't "get" the hurt part, only sees the "mad" (that, I think, is a man thing). He neglected to take into account that we had prepaid the tickets. That money is non-refundable. Additionally he broke his promise to attend with me to keep one he made (after the fact) to someone else. :snooty:

I wonder if there's hope for Jay and me then ... ours expired in April and won't be redone until October as well.
