Warning - depressing, feel free to skip -I haven't been around as much, kinda lurking. I do want to share with y'all what's going on (thanks Elin) ~ three years ago my sister-in-law lost her son at age 19 to drugs. Within a year she and her husband divorced and she was drinking heavily and on pain pills. She is now dying, her liver is shot. From what the doctors told us a few days ago she doesn't have much time so please keep her in your thoughts and prayers if so inclined. The saddest part is my poor MIL, 92, keeps saying she didn't want to live long enough to bury a child.:sad1:

Oh, hon. I will pray for you all.

Here's some pics from our visit to Biltmore's Deerpark Restaurant

This was a lunch buffet and it was very relaxed. I loved the cushy lawn furniture and open air courtyard of this restaurant. There was more food that I didn't take-Greek Salad, Heirloom Tomato Salad, Chilled Cantaloupe & Mint Bisque, Sweet and Sour Beet Salad and the Wine Poached Salmon in Lemon Parsley Butter with Wild Rice were the ones that I can remember. Oh, I also skipped their Double Crust Peach Pie (I'm just not a pie person). The winner of the meal was the stuffed chicken. I went back for seconds and thirds on that. We all had a great time here and with our annual pass discount we paid $14 per person so it was well worth it IMO.

Allison, I didn't know that Deepark had a lunch buffet! Thanks so much for sharing.....the pics look great!

This was a new one for us. The last time we tried to go there they were closed for a wedding. I would have taken pics of the buffet itself, but the waitress was giving me the evil eye and even made commentary about me taking pics. Usually I am undeterred, but figured I got what I needed for the most part. I got the impression they are just not used to people taking pics of their food there. :rotfl:

Soooooo ... was I the only one disappointed in the outcome of the Next Food Network Star?

I liked the two finalists and do think either of them could do a fine job starring on a show that will never be shown in primetime, ensuring that we all forget about them both within the next month, but I really preferred the method and POV of the person who didn't win.

Am I the only one? :confused3

I totally agree that Jeffrey is the better chef, and I certainly did enjoy his pilot and his performance throughout the show, but I think that Melissa appeals to a section of viewers that Food Network has been missing out on. As a working mom myself, I can appreciate that she makes food that is easy to pull together, not complicated, and still tastes good, and I don't think many of their other chefs offer that. Don't get me wrong....I love the Food Network chefs, and make more than my fair share of Rachael and Giada's and the others recipes (used two of them this weekend as a matter of fact). But I think that for the average working mom, it's very hard to come home and make a meal that involves 4 pots and a ton of prep work (even if the actual cooking time only takes 30 minutes)...especially when you are wiped out from working all day, and simultaneously dealing with some cantankerous rug rats running around. I think that the powers that be realized that they were missing out on a huge segment of their viewers and that's why they chose Melissa.

I do also think that Jeffrey will end up with his own show there within a year just like Adam from last year got this year.

Allison - Great porn, everything looked wonderful!!

Brenda - Jeffrey was my favorite and I was hoping he'd win but I thought Melissa would win. I'd be willing to bet he'll get a show too.;)

Kathy, I am so sorry....it's so heartbreaking to have to watch someone you love go through a cycle of self-destruction like that. My thoughts and prayers will be with you.

Kat - continued :grouphug:s for your family and an extra  for you, my friend.

Hey y'all,

Lori, I'm so sorry to hear about your Nana. Hugs:hug: & prayers:flower3:

Kat, You know I'm praying for Melissa.

Alison, Thanks for posting the pics & food porn from the Biltmore! I also didn't realize they had that many dining venues.

I haven't watched our recording of the TNFNS yet and I'm trying not to read the chat about it! So I will withhold my comments on that. ;)

I had asked on the F&W thread & didn't get any answers. Are any of you fans of Trimbach wines? We're trying to decide on the French Regional Lunch. We did it last year & it was fabulous. The best event we did. But it is again Alsace Region for us, but with Trimbach wines instead of Pierre Sparr. We are big fans of Sparr wines especially the Gewurtz & the Cremant Rose. So I tried a Trimbach Gewurtz and we didn't like it at all. Did we get a bad bottle?

Good morning everyone! :goodvibes Looks like I missed some good food porn pics - thanks Alison (yes, her name has 1 L)! Glad your trip was good! Happy be-lated Anniversary, Elin! Brenda, you had me at Chocolate. ;) The wine & jazz just makes it even better! :rotfl: Sorry I'll miss the virtual wine night, but I'll be in WDW! Have a great week & I'll catch up with you guys in about 10 days!

Cheers!
Michelle

P.S. Lori, I'm so sorry! I'll be thinking of you. We definitely have to turn the 'someday' into a real dinner in the city every so often. Things have been so busy for both of us, but I'm sure we can find a good time...

Have a great time on your trip!

You did mean food porn, or did I miss a great post? :lmao:

just my 2 cents, but they already have shows that are sort of along those lines of quick/easy meals..... "ask aida", where she takes viewers questions/etc on what to make and such; "5 ingredient fix" where the host only uses, obviously, 5 ingredients for a really easy meal; and Sandra Lee's show to name just a few.... (for anyone interested, poking on the food network site, apparently the new show is going to be "Ten dollar dinners", not 'kitchen survival guide', and start 8/9 at 11:30 cst)

not like they could go wrong with either choice.... let's just hope she sticks around longer than the winner from 2 seasons ago

I did catch "5 Ingredient Fix" for the first time this weekend, and I did find her recipes to be fairly quick and easy. As for Sandra Lee, I really can't get through an entire show of hers....while I enjoy her philosophy, something about her personality turns me off....and that kitchen set of hers sends me into sugar shock.:lmao: I just think that the Food Network honchos felt that working moms would be able to identify with Melissa in a way that they can't with the others.

I personally would have been just as happy if Jeffrey had won....but I think that everyone is correct when they say that with the scheduling they give them, we'll probably all forget that either one of them are around after a few months!;)

Hugs to you Kathy ... your family is in our thoughts.

Do you guys know how ... special we should feel that Guy Incognito stopped by?

That's my husband!!! :rotfl2:

Brenda, that's so funny....I had no idea Jay was a lurker on this thread!
And by the way....you can tell him that I don't even remember who won two seasons ago....so obviously unless you are Guy Fieri, winning TNFNS doesn't do you too much good, does it?:rotfl2:
