Belly Up to the Bar With Bendy and Her Friendies!!! Button Pics & New Thread Started!

Hey all foodies and boozies! I'm right in the thick of this (stupid and upsetting) move and I'm way behind.

Looks like we're just going to have to wait until we get to Vegas next year for some of the good stuff.

Or France!:woohoo:

Guest X doesn't even want to try afternoon tea. How many women do you know who don't want to partake in afternoon tea at the Grand Floridian??? :scared1::scared1::scared1:

Auntie Crohn and Uncle Bubba were even willing to pay for the whole thing but no dice. :sad2:

I'm not sure I can take a trip to WDW and bypass afternoon tea. :rotfl2:

Party poopers stink. :headache:

OK, I hope to see you all in a few weeks, but it will probably be more like a few months. After we get settled in a house.:guilty: Not anywhere near where we should be living.:guilty:

And then I can finish my Tokyo Disneyland TR. They closed it, so I'll have to start another thread.
We're going to do an 'Au Revoir' trip to Disneyland Paris next week and finally stay at the Disneyland Hotel. I guess that's something.:goodvibes

Miss you all!!

So sorry about the fois gras... I was blinded by the possibility that Disney had come to it's senses...

Gone, but not forgotten right ;) On track for a great drunken trip: Captain's Mai Tai's with 151 floater at SAB yesterday afternoon, Moet & Chandon Imperial champagne in France last night followed by a chocolate coffee martini at Martha's Vineyard that didn't have coffee, just liquour

Well, I'd probably be on the floor after that floater, so my hats off to you!

Thanks for the continued birthday greetings and nice comments about myBob and me. :goodvibes

We had a terrific time yesterday... left here at noon and returned at 8:00, and this spot is only 30 minutes away! Rather than post a long series of photos and descriptions, I put together a slideshow with titles that you all can choose to look at or not. That way it won't take up too much space on here either.

Winery Birthday Trip

I was seriously impressed by the entire experience. The location is gorgeous and the owners have sunk a LOT of $$ into it in the past 3 years. It shows. The food was better than good and the special touches they gave were much appreciated. We are new proud owners of their Wine & Dine Club which ought to bring some interesting events and packages over the next few years. It also gave us a 10% discount on all wines we purchased, all giftie items (like my new Wine~opoly game!) and a 20% discount on the Winemaker's Tasting. I have come close to "saving" my $50 one-time membership fee already!

The Bistro had a very eclectic menu and it was well presented and very good. We had a white wine cheese plate (brie, taleggio and a fresh goat cheese - served with a baguette, olives and a housemade apricot chutney), a cold avocado soup (I wish I had gotten a picture of this beauty before the girls tucked into it. It was a frothy, green cloud in a white ramekin garnished with a thin slice of lime. I also wish I liked avocados because it looked yummy.), their foccacia of the day (wild mushrooms and brie) and their paninni of the day (Turkey with Cheddar and a sweet, mustardy aioli served with a pasta salad that had a kick to it!).

The tasting was in the Barrel Room and included 17 (SEVENTEEN) generous tastings and commentary from the winemaker. It was about 75 minutes in length and he would have continued longer if anyone had wanted any additional information. There were two vertical tastings among all this: a Chardonnay and a Viognier. That was fascinating because Simeone (winemaker) had nothing to do with the first release of each, had helped with the blending of the second release, and was completely responsible for the third one we tried. It was so very easy to see the differences between them that way.

One of the reasons I wanted to go to this particular winery was that I find their wines to be less Virginia-tasting, probably due to it's location. They also have a port that is quite good and I was hoping it would be included in the tasting. It was! In fact, when Simone found out that it was my birthday and that this port was the first my DD had ever liked, he asked us to wait at the end of the event. The shots in my slideshow are not very good, unfortunately, because he went waaaay back into the barrels and blended two of them using the proportions he plans to combine when they are ready to bottle. It was a generous offer and one we took full advantage of. We drank almost all the hefty 2-3 oz. pour he gave each of us, and he joined us in toasting my advancing age. :rotfl:

What a wonderful way to spend a day! This place rivals most of the California wineries in its ambiance and treatment of its visitors. Virginia wines are getting better and better so that made it even more enjoyable.

Elin, this sounds great!

Had to do a last minute ADR restructure last night thanks to Guests X & Y ... they've now decided that the fewer meals they share with us the better because they're not taking this trip for food but to enjoy our company.

:confused3

Ummmm ... the best way to enjoy our company (if enjoy is really the right word, and I'm not sure it is :lmao:) is to sit down over some food and drink. :rotfl2:

I don't know if money is an issue or if something else is at work here. I do know that all of the places that the nephew really wanted to try are suddenly (pardon the expression) off the table. So they're going to wing it except for the couple of meals that they are going share with us.

I tried to warn them that the winging it approach doesn't always work well at WDW in October but they are determined to do it.

Here's hoping it all works out for the best.

How's everyone else's ADR setting going so far? Our 90-day is Thursday ... I'm looking forward to getting it out of the way so that I can re-work it again when the F&W details are released.

I think it is either a sudden money crunch, or they want to back out of the trip but are afraid to hurt your feelings, so they are backing out of the meals instead. Maybe even a combo of the both. I've been reading your trip reports for a while now, and you both seem to be delightful meal companions (at least there have been no mentions of eating with your hands or slurping your soup:lmao:), so I sincerely doubt the reasoning that they gave you.

But looking on the bright side....now you don't have to play meal planner for two people who didn't seem very appreciative of your efforts. Plus, you now have more options for your meal choices.

We're going to do an 'Au Revoir' trip to Disneyland Paris next week and finally stay at the Disneyland Hotel. I guess that's something.:goodvibes

Miss you all!!

BriarMom, I hope you enjoy your farewell trip, and that you have as stress free a move as possible! I know that you are not happy about the move (and who would be happy to leave Europe? Not this girl for sure!), but at least you won't have a 7 hour flight to get to WDW now. Of course, DLP will no longer be in your backyard anymore. Nope, no matter how hard I try, I really can't come up with a silver lining for you.....wow, I suck!:rolleyes1

I'm sorry that X and Y are causing such a commotion on the trip planning. Do you think that they are really not wanting to go to WDW with you guys, but don't know how to back out? I feel just the opposite as they do on how to spend quality time together at a theme park. If you are together at a meal, you are in air-conditioned comfort to talk about your day, not in a line or walking in the blazing sun getting grumpy because someone is not keeping up. They do seem to have been more distant this year, don't they?

I can't even fathom not wanting to go to tea...:sad2:

Would they be offended if you asked them if they truly wanted to still go? That's an awkward question, I know. You've done so much for them, I hope things clear up soon.

Definitely more distant ... yes indeedy. I have a feeling the new wife really doesn't like us too much ... or really, me. I seem to do everything wrong when I'm around her. :confused3

Anyhoo ... they must want to go because they've purchased their non-refundable airfare and park tickets ... they just don't want to spend all their time with us. And that's OK because Jay and I are loners at heart ... we have brief bursts of sociability followed by long hermit-like periods of surliness. :rotfl2:

Wow. I love afternoon tea. I can't even fathom not going. I've had such wonderful experiences there!

You had asked earlier how everyone was doing with their ressies, and I wanted to chime and say pretty good here.

We actually added two days onto the front of our trip, and my whole (mom, dad, nana, fil) family will arrive on the third day. For the first two, it's just the three of us. There are a ton of ressies I'd love to score for those days, but no dice.

Here's our line up so far.

Monday, Sept 28, Grand Floridian Cafe Breakfast (I think 1000am)

Tuesday, Sept 29, The Captain's Grille Dinner

Wednesday, Sept 30, The Crystal Palace - the only place I could get around the MK area for our party size, and we're doing lunch

Thursday, Oct 1, Tea at the GF

Friday, Oct 2, Sci Fi Dine In Lunch

Saturday, Oct 3, Brown Derby Dinner

Sunday, Oct 4, Chef Mickey's Late Breakfast before we leave

Bendy, have you been to GF Cafe and Captain's Grille before? I thought I might have read favorable reviews form you, but I can't remember.

Hey Kat - your line-up sounds tasty good and I'm glad to hear it's gone OK for you so far. We had breakfast at the GFC last fall and it was great. Used to have breakfast at the Yacht Club Galley (Captain's Grille) until a few years back when they served us icky food with ickier service and a bogus cafe mocha to boot.

They are now officially on the list ... along with Bommarito Volkswagon of St. Peters whic can't fix my car which broke down again on me as I was trying to get home from work. Yes, that's right .... they've spent more time with my car in the last two weeks than I have and they still don't know their spark plugs from their .... insert censored word here. :headache::mad:

Bendy - I'm confuzzled too, makes no sense to me.:confused3

I've got my list ready...

The Turf Club (L)
Flying Fish (D)
California Grill (D)
Mama Melrose (L)
Citricos (D)
Liberty tree Tavern (L)
JIKO (D)
Grand Floridian Café (B)

Well, my friendies like me if my own family doesn't! :lmao:

Lovin your list, Kathy!

We've missed you too, Briarmom! Don't be a stranger and good luck with everything ... please keep in touch with us and look for a second Bendy thread soon ... I think we're going to push maximum density with this one before October.

So sorry about the fois gras... I was blinded by the possibility that Disney had come to it's senses...

S'alright about the liver ... easy mistake to make and your heart was in the right place.

I don't have tea scheduled for this trip ... yet. You will have to keep me posted about how your time is going to play out. We leave WDW on the morning of the 24th. :sad2:

I think it is either a sudden money crunch, or they want to back out of the trip but are afraid to hurt your feelings, so they are backing out of the meals instead. Maybe even a combo of the both. Thanks very much - you said such nice things and after the evening I've had being calmly demanding at the local VW dealership a cyber warm fuzzy was just what I needed.

And it's true that I don't have to plan meals for them but I still feel responsible ... stupid, isn't it?

Oh ... and sometimes we do eat with our hands, but only after we've eaten our utensils. And soup slurping is only allowed if the slurper can deliver a wicked loud belch immediately afterwards. :rotfl2:

I think guest X is crazy for not wanting to do the afternoon tea. That is such a pretty restaurant and the tea is so nice and relaxing. It's a great midday break from the parks, with yummy sandwiches and desserts.

Right now our ADRS are:
Tutto Italia
Tusker house
Ohana
Kona
Crystal Palace (MNSSHP)
leCellier
Grand Floridan Cafe (B)
I'm leaving one day open for F&W and will switch a dinner for a lunch if the dessert party for Wishes becomes an option in September. I read Jack's review on allears.net and it looks delicious. :goodvibes

:sad1::sad1::sad1:

No one's ever here when I'm posting anymore.

Oh well ... I'll share my planned ADR list with everyone ... keep in mind I can't make any reservations until Thursday and obviously can't make F&W ressies until next month. But this is my ideal! :rotfl2:

October 14th ... the un-ADR day: lunch at Beaches and Cream; dinner at Kimonos or the Kona Sushi Bar; dessert around the World Showcase.

October 15th ... breakfast in the room courtesy of Boulangerie Patissiere. Snacking around the World Showcase for second breakfast and lunch; dinner at Citricos or the F&W dinner at Flying Fish

October 16th ... breakfast at the Boardwalk Bakery and dinner at Blue Zoo ... we think.

October 17th ... breakfast at the Grand Floridian Cafe; F&W pairing at Tutto Italia; dinner at Narcoossee's or Flying Fish depending on how events pan out.

October 18th ... breakfast at Fresh ... late lunch snack at Sci-Fi with X & Y ... dinner at V&A!!!

October 19th ... breakfast at Koma with X&Y ... dinner at Il Mulino (for either two or four depending on how things work out). Beaches & Cream for the Kitchen Sink???

October 20th ... breakfast at Cape May ... and then hold on to the contents of your stomachs because it's Lord of the Drinks staring Bendy & Jay ... Epcot will never be the same. Lunch at Chefs for two ... how could I forget??? Dinner is likely to be us and a group of cruise friends sweeping the seas and the taps clean at the Yorkshire Fishie & Chippie place.

October 21st ... breakfast in the room ... F&W pairing in Mexico ... late dinner at Raglan Road per X&Y's request.

October 22nd ... breakfast at Boma with X&Y .... surprise dinner at CA Grill with X&Y (shhhh, don't tell them 'cause they don't know that's where we're taking them).

October 23rd .... freedom, horrible freedom ... breakfast? We dunno. Lunch? We're not sure. Dinner ... so many choices. Do we try the Alan Wong thing at the Welcome Center? Jay says no and that would only cover us for lunch (and expensive lunch at that). Do we have afternoon tea? Probably not. Dinner at Jiko? Or dinner at Bistro? I NEED HELP HERE, PEOPLE!!!

:lmao::rotfl2::laughing:

Oh, I understand completely about still feeling responsible....I'm the same way. And it's even harder when it's family....because you're stuck with them, and so you want to maintain the status quo. After all, it certainly makes the holidays easier when you don't want to stab the people across the table with a butter knife.

And I am so sorry that you are still having car problems....I suggest heavy drinking at this point. It won't help your car situation, but at least you a) won't remember that your car seems to be stuck on the third level of Dante's Inferno, and b) won't care if you do remember!

I told Jay I don't understand how X, who is supposedly wild about looseleaf teas, wouldn't want to experience the joy that is afternoon tea at the GF. Even Grimace liked it enough to want to do it on a second trip to WDW and she doesn't even like tea.

Go figure ... I think I'm going to work in a way for Jay and me to go anyway and poofie woofie on them.

And Bridget ... I read that same review ... doesn't it sound lovely? :cloud9:

Ya know ... I usually want to stab my family members with a butter knife on a good day. Hmmmm ... maybe it's for the best that we won't be sharing many meals with them.

I kid ... I kid ... sort of. ;)

I'm thinking of getting myself a drink ... Jay has offered to work from home tomorrow so that I can have his car. I have a loan meeting in Clayton and there's only one other person working in our office this week. I have no flexibility ... I have to be there even if I'm dying. :scared:

Your plans look positively delicious!!!
How long is WDW going to torture us with waiting for the firm details on F&W. :rolleyes1
I confess to checking the site several times a day. Patience is not my strong point.

well, if that lady at the TiW place was being honest with me last week they have until August 1st to finalize everthing. I was hoping that it wouldn't go that long but I bet it does.

Plans, plans, it's a fall of plans!
I think we have everything set for the our 3 days with DD. Universal may never be the same.
I made reservations at Boma for Sunday night. She'll like it. Stay tuned. Boyfriend of about 10 months says he wants to talk to her Dad when we're there. I think it's sweet...I'm a little touched they still do that these days. I'll let you guys know if it turns out to be football or something more special. :goodvibes

I have felt crummy for the past couple of months. Went back to Dr. tests again...long story short they should have treated me 6 weeks ago. They were apologetic, I was just glad to finally have an answer. I'm now on Cipro and I wouldn't wish that stuff on my worst enemy. Two more days to go, and I'll be done with it. So, here's hoping I'm on the mend. :thumbsup2

We have about a trip a month scheduled through Dec, so there is no time to be sick.

Always love to hear what's new with the friendies. We'll all celebrate together when the F&W schedule finally arrives!:yay::yay::yay:

Sounds like good news coming with your DD ... how exciting! And I think it's great that he wants to speak with your hubby too ... it's nice to know that some people still have that sense of respect. :goodvibes

I'm sorry to hear you've been under the weather and doubly sorry to hear about the Cipro. I've had to take that a couple of times and I hate the side effects that I always always always end up with (I have the same issues with Flagyl). I hope you feel better soon.

I haven't caught up yet, but I hope everyone is well (and Bendy's car is fixed --is there a crossed fingers smilie?)

Having a great time! It's hot, but hasn't been horrible. Today was worse because we never got a good rain to cool it down, so it was very muggy.

After all of my trips, I did have a first today! We ended up having lunch at Tony's Town Square. I'll write it up later, but I will say we were happy :goodvibes Then we had our favorite Brown Derby for dinner tonight. Excellent as always and we got a neat little thing for our anniversary :cool1:

I'm trying to post pics as I go on the blog. I also posted a funny video on there tonight. If you like Weird Al and/or the Jungle Cruise -- I love Jungle Cruise and think Weird Al is weirdly likeable :rolleyes1 -- check it out it's called Skipper Dan

It's time to soak my sore body in the hot tub or just fall into bed. Talk to y'all later :goodvibes

Okay, this list is making me drool on my computer....it all sounds so good! How dare you put up this list when it's 11:00 here and I've already been contemplating raiding the pantry for whatever snackies I can find (including my daughter's pop tarts and my son's graham crackers....I'm hungry and I'm not too proud to stoop!)

You and my DH would get along great.....he's got an entire Weird Al playlist on his iPod and Jungle Cruise is his favorite ride. I need to show him that link.....he would really like it. Glad you're having fun!

I haven't had pop tarts in years ... :cloud9:

The more I think about it the more I think I've gotta work in Afternoon Tea on this trip. WE MUST HAVE IT!!!

And I wish I could think of something for our last night's dinner that we both really want to do. Jay wants Jiko and I want Bistro ... so unless we compromise and eat at Blue Zoo's bar I think I'll just suck it up and go to Jiko. That may be one of his all-time favs on property and he's always such a good sport about everything that I hate to not get him an ADR where he'd like to go...ya know what I mean?

I agree with you....you have to do the Afternoon Tea...forget about X&Y and just do it! And get yourself some Pop Tarts, woman! How can you have gone so long without them?!?

What about trying the new Cat Cora place? It would be something that neither of you have done yet, and it should be open by the time you go...

I think afternoon tea should be a must do for you. You deserve it! :goodvibes
You certainly can't go wrong with Jiko, especially if it's hubby's favorite place. Decisions, decisions.

Musing on ADR's is basically a full time job, isn't it? :rotfl:

Pop tarts ... Jay is a tolerant man but he prefers that my junk food at least have the redeeming quality of having protein in it. So while he doesn't always like my affinity for cheeseburgers and pizza there is at least some nutritional benefit that I can use to justify indulging in them now and then. Pop tarts on the other hand ... they're pretty much empty calories so I just don't buy them. Although right now I think I could eat an entire box of chocolate pop tarts and wash 'em down with a gallon of milk.

And we have talked about Cat Cora's place but won't commit to dining there until we see a menu. So unless it really wows us we're liable to by-pass it. It took me three years of considering Spoodles menu before I'd finally suggest having dinner there. :rotfl2:

It's totally a full-time job ... I wish I could get paid for it. :lmao:

Thanks for the ideas and thanks for letting me vent my continued automotive frustrations. I have a feeling I'm going to have an new car by the end of the week.

The difference between what I want and what we can afford right now is rather large ... I wanted a Lexus IS 250 or an Infinity G37 but with all the bonus drop-off we've experienced in our jobs there isn't a lot of extra cash to play with. So I'm considering a Honda CRV or maybe a Nissan Altima. I spend a lot of time in my car - between 300 and 350 miles per week so I need something with long-term reliability and that's also somewhat comfortable to spend a lot of time in.
