Being excused from Jury duty?

The last time I was on jury duty, there was a guy that made it very obvious that he didn't want to be there. He was basically a jerk and said things to get out of being on a jury. Obviously, he was not going to be picked by either attorney but instead of dismissing him, the judge made him go sit off to the side by himself. It took three full days to pick that jury and every night when we were dismissed, the guy asked if he needed to return. He certainly did, according to the judge. He made him sit by himself the entire time. It was perfect. :rotfl2:

Good luck to you OP. You have a very good reason for not serving.

That person got rightfully what they deserved. You act like a child and you get treated like one.

Update. I was deferred until August 9, 2010. They said that time is a slow time for the courts, so that should help. Well, if I'm taking care of my mom at that time, it won't matter. I guess if they won't excuse me now, they won't excuse me then either. It gives me time to figure out what to do.

It's hard to find help that's on call like I have to be and for not much pay.

I was excused from federal jury duty because I had no one to care for my kids- elder care is the same so you should have no problem.

I have to say that I know I'm wierd but I was actually disappointed that I couldn't work it out- I really wanted to be on a jury.

I was only called once. Here they give you a 3 month window in which you might be called. My window was Oct, Nov and Dec. I was pregnant and due in October. I called and the person who answered the phone immediately took my name off the list, but I still had to send in a note from my OB.

That was 9 years ago and I haven't been called back, but my mom has been called almost every other year. I guess they must think I'm still pregnant!:rotfl2:

August is when there are several judge's seminars happening, so the jury dockets are usually slow then. But if you do have to go in, it will probably just be a for a morning until you've had a chance to talk to the presiding judge about your situation. I know it's a hassle to go in, but it's hard for them to make a decision about who is just trying to get out of service and who is in real need until they talk to you face to face.

Good luck in August!

I was excused the only time I got called up because the case was in a different county than I lived in.

I was called for jury duty a few years ago. My Dr. wrote a letter describing my chronic illnesses. I rec'd a letter back from the courts and was excused FOR LIFE. :confused3 Didn't know they could do that but I guess they can.

In NY no one is exempt from jury duty. Lawyer, judge or Mayor it does not matter. You can get one postponement but must then schedule when you will serve. That does not mean you will actually be on a jury. Every time I have been called, we sit there all day waiting and then the judge says all the cases have been settled. When you call to see about the next day they usually say you are done.
