Behavior Challenge Thread

Grace, you rock!!! I'm very appearance-conscious, and have had to let go of a lot of that with Zoe. With our older dd, I spent so much time choosing the perfect outfits, hair, shoes etc. With Zoe, I constantly ask myself, is this a priority with whatever I'm wrestling with. It's very free-ing.

C and G's Mama, wish I could see a picture of your leprechaun!!

Leprechaun!? How funny! Be sure to post a pic!

I should be packing but I'm playing here on the boards. :rolleyes1 Why is it once you've been to WDW more than a few times it's tough to get as excited as you were back in the days where you had Disney dreams every night for weeks before your trip? Don't get me wrong, there's a spring in my step but I would've been packed and ready to go by now a few years ago. :lmao:

Anyway, tomorrow is "Western Wear" day at school. :scared1:

{saying a prayer to get me through tomorrow morning}

They are having a school play next week and I am very proud of dd, she has been obsessing over not wanting to do the play and she actually told the music teacher she was not going to do it! :teacher: Very proud of her for speaking up for herself! :goodvibes

Did anyone catch the new show on NBC called Parenthood where the parents are finally told their son has Aspergers and they hug each other like they got told the kid has cancer or something? Even the "normal" friends I have thought that was a little over the top. My sister asked me if that's how my husband and I took it. I told her that me and most everyone I know was like, "Is that all? Aspergers? Awesome!!!"

So Grace, I am so happy that you have finally joined us here in Happy Land, where Normal is not Normal and who the hell cares.

I watched The Incredibles last night for the first time in a couple of years. I have long said that someone high up at Pixar is an Aspie, if not the whole lot of them, based on the Aspie intonations in each movie (except Cars, which I still have not been able to watch all the way through, but I digress). So think of your kids as little Supers and find the talents they have and then just protect their identity and let it roll.

And for those of us who sometimes need to throw a pity party, I think of people like Hunnybean, and I think that I just need to get over my big bad self. So here's the love I'm sending to Hunnybean and the hope that she has good days, too.

I have to tell you all that we've been really sick, and I've been suffering through a terrible head cold. I was hungry, but can't smell or taste much, so I got the brilliant idea to make Bobotie, which is a wonderful South African dish with meat, raisins, onions, and eggs and it's served over rice. They make it at AKL, by the way. Anyway, I made it because it sounded savory and sweet and I had the ingredients for it (except curry, which you should not use if you want your kids to eat it---use cinnamon instead). I told my son it was from Africa, it had Mango chutney in it, and he ate two bowls. I also let him eat in my bedroom with only the light from the TV so he could not see the onions and raisins, which in any other instance would cause him to vomit on sight-literally. He loved it! So thanks for the culinary hug from a continent away...

Grace, can i sneak in your suitcase? I would love a WDW trip this year. We have to go visit my DH's family in Europe this year and after booking the tickets, my DH looked at me and said, "I know you are calculating exactly how many WDW vacations you could pay for with the $ we are spending on this trip, huh?"

The answer is 2 very Deluxe level Concierge level weeks. Grrrrrrrr.....

I must admit I teared up a little when watching that scene in Parenthood. I get what they went through in their head but I was so pleased at the end when he was playing Pirate with his son in the backyard. :thumbsup2 I don't think it's realistic that they got to there in one episode but I realize it's dramatic tv. I really like the scene in the last episode where the boy couldn't go into the musical because of the candles. That was right on target with the "strange" things we deal with that aren't as simple as just "making him do it".

This morning, getting ready for western day wasn't too bad although I had to draw the line and not let dd take a lasso. :lmao:

One week from now I'll be on a plane to my happy place. :cloud9:

DD5 is still bruised on her face from her fall, 2 weeks ago tomorrow. the dentist visit was wonderful, she sat in the chair and let him mess with her teeth and he recommended a dentist that works only speical needs children, so we are setting up an appointment with them for a claning.

She has changed since the fall, her behavior has gotten so much better. My Dh took her with him sunday to best buy and walmart- they are an hour away- she was with him over 4 hours with the drive and shopping and she was wonderful. I took her to walmart yesterday to get easter candy for church and she was a normal 5 year old. for the last 3 years we hardly took her to stores. So we have decided to take her out as much as we can and show her the rewards of good behavior.

We love Bobotie. The first time we had it was at F&W a few years back. And then at AKL last time we went.
Love the oniions and raisings. My kids love raisins but hate onions. If they only knew how many onions we sneak into things.

Wow if you get get 2 Deluxes Concierge Levels we could probably get 4 value weeks. Wow...

I think this is the only group of people that could understand being ticked you couldn't go to Disney cause you have to go to Europe.

No trip for us in 2010 either, hopefully 2011. I really want to go in October this year, but it probably won't happen.

thanks for the love....

Just thought I would give an update:
My daughter is now in the hospital....she had an extremely violent outburst at the doctors office this morning...bad enough that the police had to come and take her in a police car to the er, while I followed behind.....I thank god that the deputy was able to get her very excited about a ride in a cop car, so they did not have to handcuff her, like they originally informed they would.....I have been expecting a hospitalization someday, but never thought that I would have to see my 8 year old being taken away by police......I pray that maybe they can find some meds to make her more stable......Anyway, some extra special prayers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hunnybean, all I can say is:sad1::grouphug::wizard:

Grace, whats wrong with taking a lasso?:rotfl2: My DS would want to, also.

C&G's Mama, hope you all have fun today in the parade. I bet your Leprechaun can kick the other Leprechaun's butts, height wise! My 7 year old looks like a fifth grader line backer (in pink) in with all those 2nd graders at school. Can't wait for pics.

kymmyk13, glad to hear of the progress on all fronts. Being willing to make a new plan and go with it at the spur of the moment is really important. Kudos to you and your DH for thinking outside the box and being willing to give your DD a chance. Lot's of people would just stick with the 3 yr schedule and not be interested in trying something new for DD. Yay for you. This could be a new page in your lives. Maybe the turning point has arrived.

I think we've had things like that happen here with our DS. One minute I think the behavior is permanent, and the next thing I know, some fluke thing happens and we are on a new path.

Hope you kids have a great weekend.

And it's so true. I would gladly trade my ticket to Europe for a WDW trip. We won't even discuss my fear of flying, which is most likely the underlying issue n all this. And I'd feel so much better if I could pick my ADR's and know there is reliable Disney transportation while I'm there. It' sick and somewhat sad, bu that's the truth.

Hunnybean, I read my PP and think it lacks the gravity that your situation deserves. So know that I am thinking of you and have been, actually. You really needed help and I am grateful that you and your entire family may now get it. I know this must be extremely hard for all of you, but in 6 months-which is enough time for treatments to take a hold and meds to be figured out, things will most likely be changing for the better for all involved. So take the help and hold your head up high. Don't be defensive. Know that we know that you are a loving mother. I feel so sad for people that blame themselves for what are essentially chemical/psychological problems with family. The important thing to do is keep her safe and the rest of the family out of harm's way, as well.

I found these quotes from C.S. Lewis that I love.

"Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another, 'What! You too? I thought I was the only one.'"

and then this....

"It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird; it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at the present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad."

I think both of those sum up my theory on life. (And from the Incredibles, "If everyone is super, then nobody will be.")

Hunnybean, bless you for working so hard for your DD. It is so hard to face what the possible answers might be and so scary to look at that sweet little girl you love so much and see what you are seeing. I am sure that ride to the hosipital was simply heartbreaking. I am glad they didn't have to handcuff her and hope that your DD can still see police officers as someone to be relied on and not someone to be feared and not trusted. I pray that you and she will get the help you are seeking and need so desperately.

I have a little boy in my preschool class who I think is also diagnosed with schizophrenia. He is on some major anti-psychotic drugs for one so small but it has made such a huge difference for him. He went from tuned out and extremely agressive last year, to really thriving this year.

My little Leprechuan and all of us had a great time today.

Hunnybean, I cannot even imagine what you must be going through. Hopefully your dd will get the help she needs and be back home soon. Feel free to come here for support or to vent.

Kymmyk13, glad to hear your dd is doing better! Strange that she would be better after a fall but I guess we all take what we can get! Hope the better behavior keeps up!

The pic of the St Patty's Day outfits is so cute! Hope ya'll had fun at the parade.

DDM, hope you're feeling better!

Things are going better for us. Today I'm trying to put all the final touches on packing & everything else. Got the stroller ready, final touches on the itinerary, etc etc.

Wish I could pack all of you in our suitcase and we could have a fun trip together! They upped the crowd calendar so I am bracing for large crowds, we will need the GAC for sure. DD is doing well, fingers crossed for a drama free vacation!

4 More Days (using Disney math of course)!

:cloud9:

C & G's Mama- Loved the St. Patty's day pics...Savannah has the second biggest celebration, millions come into town for it, we even get off of school for it....so, we have our green hair spray and shirts ready!

Disdreamin- Thanks for the quotes... I really like them.

I just want to thank everyone for all the kind words and thoughts....I got to visit her for 10 minutes yesterday, she would not tolerate anymore.....BUT today I got to see her for almost 2 hours........I am expecting big problems tomorrow, because she will have school to go to in the hospital, and she is not happy.....

I am about to make a cake look like an animal cell with my DD11 for her science project that is due tomorrow.....She is excited, she wanted to take in something they could all eat!:thumbsup2

C and G's Mama, your son is adorable!! Hunnybean, too cool about the cell cake for your older dd. I'm sorry about the hospitalization. I hope some good can come from it, and maybe you'll have some answers along the way.

Grace, I'm green (not as a leprechaun!) with envy about your upcoming trip. Have a great time!

Boston, NYC, never would have guessed Savannah, who knew? Have a blast.

DS is a trip. "I don't have a belt, do all leprechauns have belts?" "Well I guess they can have different accessories":rotfl: It was cold and drizzling so I made him wear his "Cars" raincoat until we started marching. He was not pleased as it's not green. He had on a green T-shirt under a white turtle neck under a green polo.

We think he should be the parade leprechaun in training. The guy that's done it for years is starting to slow down. Of course DS will be a 6' leprechaun when he grows up, but hey...:confused3

HunnyBean,
Here is to hoping that she actually enjoys the school time, IF the team who is working with her is really good you may see a completely different reaction than you are expecting once she gets "into it"

I've subscribed to the touring plans program that shows wait times at all the rides. Today it went through the roof. 2 plus hour waits on the top attractions. This has put a little dent into my enthusiasm for our upcoming trip. We'll just have to make the best of it. DD ramps up and is much worse in tight crowds. We may be spending more time at the resort than usual.

We went canoeing this weekend. DD wouldn't get near the canoe, was upset, wanting to go but couldn't get over the fear of the water. Finally I got her in and after a while she calmed down and had a good time. She actually didn't want to get out after over an hour of paddling around in circles. :) There was another young girl there who was freaking out about some fire ants, dd has never done this, but since she was "exposed" to the other girl freaking out she's asked me about 100 times "are there ants here?", "can ants get in my bed?", are there ants on the airplane?" and every speck she sees on the ground she thinks is an ant. :rotfl2: I'm exhausted with the ant phobia!

Packing coming along fine. DD had a substitute today and I've had some problems with her this afternoon, very emotional and agitated. I had a meeting with the school on Friday and they are SOOOOO much more willing to help and offer interventions and accommodations. Don't know what changed but there is a big change. Everything I've asked for they've been more than willing to do and they're being very proactive about planning for next year. I met a woman whose son was pushed along through school until they found in third grade he couldn't read. This prompted me to ask for the Reading Specialist to evaluate dd. They were more than happy to comply. :goodvibes

Hope all is well with everyone!
:goodvibes

So no activity on this thread while we were away? :confused3

We just returned last night from our trip! It was a wonderful trip for the most part. We took it easy as I was feeling a bit under the weather at the start of the trip. I had a great time going at a slower pace and taking it easy, not needing to do anything in particular. We had a few issues. We tried to arrive at shows very early and get seats at the very back and away from the crowds. However, with the heavy crowds people would squeeze in at the last minute and this created quite a bit of anxiety with dd. We had to leave a few times. Then on Friday night it was extremely crowded and a teenaged boy running through the crowd tripped on dd's stroller and fell on top of her. This created quite a scene, she wasn't hurt thankfully but very afraid and it took quite a while to calm her down. The worst thing was at the airport. The security agent wouldn't clear dd because of a typo in the name (which is strange because it was a RT ticket and spelled right on the original flight) so they sent us to airline counter to handle it. The security agent told us we wouldn't make it on the flight which made dd go into a full blown meltdown. Anyway, dd incoherent and crying all the way to ticket counter, through the line, back to security line, through that line. People were staring which made it worse. I didn't know what to do. There was perhaps 30 minutes til the flight, then they weren't going to let us through security because they said dd "would have to calm down ma'am before we'll allow you to enter the area". WHAT?????? Yikes, I picked her up and rocked her and tried to calm her down and they finally let us in and we made the flight, thankfully!

Ahhhh, such drama to end an otherwise restful and easy-going trip. The crowds were quite large but we did the best we could and left when we were too tired. Weather was wonderful, perhaps the best weather I've ever had for a trip! Flower and Garden was beautiful and everyone was very nice and pleasant for the most part. We actually saw Fantasmic for the first time!

Hope all is well with everyone!:goodvibes
