Beginners sewing question? Wrong thread, breaking

ok, beginner sewer here. I bought some pretty shiney thread to match my material. The one material is a brocade, the other a shiny material.
Both pretty heavy material.
So, after wanting to pull my hair out. This thread kept breaking, snagging, like every inch or so. Is this thread to thick for my maching that it keeps breaking? I adjusted the tension up and down, all over for like an hour. Extremely frustrated.
The thread is prem sulky 40 wt rayon.

So, after wanting to toss the sewing machine out the window, trying to use this thread, i had some coats and clark dual duty all purpose thread almost the same color. This stuff worked awesome, no snag, no break for the rest of the night.

So what did i do wrong. I'm hoping jo-ann's will return the other spools of thread i purchased that were not used. I had bought like 6. So, i'm hoping the un-used can go back because its worthless to me..

There is a sewing thread on the Family Board that can help you. The ladies and Tom over there know all. I don't know but if the other worked I would think it is the wrong thread.

Can't help you with troubleshooting the breaking thread, since I always just use cotton or polyester thread (or the occasional elastic for shirring), but just wanted to say Jo-Ann's will definitely take the thread back.. just take your receipt along and there will be no problem at all.. I've returned thread plenty of times to them.

did you loosen the tension on the bobbin as well? was the thread breaking from the top thread or bottom thread? there should be a tiny screw on your bobbin case that gets thicker or thinner, maybe the string was getting stuck in that.

Since you are using a thicker thread, you need a needle with a larger eye. You want to be sure you have a "sharp" needle (not ballpoint, that has a rounded edge on the tip) and you want the biggest eye possible on it...the smaller the number (which is the needle 'size), the smaller the eye is, so ideally you want a needle with a #14, #16 or #18 size eye in it..that should help keep the thread from snagging and breaking. You might also need to loosen the tension (lower number on the dial)

Additionally, try using a thinner (higher weight number like #50 weight) thread in the bobbin.

Unless you get into specialty sewing (like furniture covers)...the best thread choice will always be an "All-purpose" thread. Alot of the pretty, shiny threads are for decorative purposes and not the actual sewing of garments.

If you bought your machine from a "sewing machine" store, go and talk to them about what's best for your machine. Or talk to someone in Joann's...even if all of them don't sew, there are plenty who do.

So, in other words: this is a THREAD thread???

Sorry...just couldn't help it. Must be the cold weather...

As a previous posted noted, rayon thread is not meant to do everyday sewing. It is for decorative stitching only. I will use 30/40 wt rayon exclusively with my embroidery machines.

You've already changed to all purpose thread - that's good.

Check your needle. You need the proper needle for the weight/type of fabric you're using. Change your needle often. My rule of thumb; new needle every 100,000 stitches. Or with every new garment. If in doubt - throw it out. To save your aggravation/frustration is worth the price of a needle.

If your machine has multiple speeds, slow it down a little.
